    Abstract Small bowel internal hernias (IHs), a rare cause of small bowel occlusion (SBO) and small bowel strangulation, while more commonly seen in young adults, can also affect elderly patients and pose a significant diagnostic challenge due to their nonspecific symptoms. In most cases, laparotomy was used to diagnose IHs. However, multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) is usually the best imaging tool to use in the emergency setting for the diagnosis of IHs. An 83-year-old man was admitted to emergency with acute abdominal pain and a coffee-ground vomitus. The abdominal MDCT showed a clustered-like appearance of proximal jejunal loops at the level of the Treitz ligament with the absence of transit of the medium water-soluble iodine oral contrast agent (Gastrografin). Mesenteric edema was also present with initial suffering of the intestinal wall. A left paraduodenal hernia (LPDH) with strangulation was suspected following the radiological report. The emergency laparotomy revealed about 20 cm of proximal jejunal loops herniated through a 3 cm wide hernia orifice (HO) along the Treitz ligament, at the level of Landzert fossa, located in the confluence of the descending mesocolon, posterior to the inferior mesenteric vein (IMV) and confirming the LPDH. The patient was discharged in good condition some days later. IHs do not have sufficient coverage in literature, especially in cases regarding elderly patients, however, they can be a cause of SBO in people older than 80 years of age. Radiologists and surgeons should be aware of the anatomical aspects of the IHs.

    Abstract Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Although the reference standard for SARS-CoV-2 diagnosis is real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), computed tomography (CT) is recommended for both initial evaluation and follow-up. There is a growing body of published evidence about CT evolution during the course of COVID-19 pneumonia. Here, we report six confirmed cases of COVID-19 patients who underwent unenhanced chest CT on admission and after 4 months from the onset of symptoms. Chest-CT at first admission showed the typical CT features of COVID-19. Interestingly, the follow-up CT revealed the persistence of lung abnormalities in five cases even if all the patients were completely asymptomatic. Further studies are needed for a comprehensive understanding of the disease progression and the resulting late imaging modifications.

    Abstract Small bowel internal hernias (IHs), a rare cause of small bowel occlusion (SBO) and small bowel strangulation, while more commonly seen in young adults, can also affect elderly patients and pose a significant diagnostic challenge due to their nonspecific symptoms.     Abstract Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). First identified in December 2019, in Wuhan, China, it has since become a global pandemic. Complications of COVID-19 are not limited to the pulmonary system, but also include neurologic manifestations such as stroke. We report two cases of coincidental presentation of COVID-19 and cerebrovascular accident. Further studies are needed for a comprehensive understanding of the neurological pathology of COVID-19 and its effects on the nervous system, but stroke teams should be wary of the fact that COVID-19 patients may present with cerebrovascular accidents.

    Abstract Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). First identified in December 2019 in Wuhan, China, it has since become a global pandemic. Although the reference standard for SARS-CoV-2 diagnosis is real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), computed tomography (CT) is recommended for both initial evaluation and follow-up. The CT findings in COVID-19 are varied, but typical ground-glass opacities are usually reported to occupy a peripheral costal subpleural distribution. Here we report eight confirmed COVID-19 cases who underwent clinical evaluation, laboratory testing, and unenhanced chest CT. In all patients, chest CT showed the presence of ground-glass opacities in the mediastinal subpleural parenchyma. While these cases also showed the typical CT features of COVID-19, involvement of the mediastinal subpleural parenchyma should not lower the index of suspicion for COVID-19.

    Abstract The measurement of biological tissues' dielectric properties plays a crucial role in determining the state of health, and recent studies have reported microwave biosensing to be an innovative method with great potential in this field. Research has been conducted from the tissue level to the cellular level but, to date, cellular adhesion has never been considered. In addition, conventional systems for diagnosing tumor aggressiveness, such as a biopsy, are rather expensive and invasive. Here, we propose a novel microwave approach for biosensing adherent cancer cells with different malignancy degrees. A circular patch resonator was designed adjusting its structure to a standard Petri dish and a network analyzer was employed. Then, the resonator was realized and used to test two groups of different cancer cell lines, based on various tumor types and aggressiveness: low- and high-aggressive osteosarcoma cell lines (SaOS-2 and 143B, respectively), and low- and high-aggressive breast cancer cell lines (MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231, respectively). The experimental results showed that the sensitivity of the sensor was high, in particular when measuring the resonant frequency. Finally, the sensor showed a good ability to distinguish low-metastatic and high-metastatic cells, paving the way to the development of more complex measurement systems for noninvasive tissue diagnosis.

    Abstract The interest in the modulation of gut microbiota by polyphenols from olives and derived products is increasing. In this work, phenolic leaf extracts (PLE) were in vitro faecal fermented to evaluate the changes in phenolic profiles and the impact on microbiota, using a commercial extra-virgin olive oil (EVOO) as reference. The in vitro fermentation decreased oleuropein content in PLE, determining an increase of hydroxytyrosol and other phenolic metabolites. An increase (p < 0.05) of hydroxytyrosol (LogFC = 6.02; VIP score = 1.05) was also observed in fermented EVOO. Besides, PLE significantly (p < 0.05) changed amino acids (LogFC = 6.1) and fatty acids (LogFC = 5.9) profile of the faeces. Metagenomic sequencing revealed that Coriobacteriaceae at the family level, and Collinsella at the genus level, were the most affected by PLE fermentation. These findings support the modulation of the gut microbiota exerted by phenolics from PLE and EVOO.
