    Abstract Wireless networks beyond 5G will mostly be serving myriads of sensors and other machine-type communications (MTC), with each device having different requirements in respect to latency, error rate, energy consumption, spectral efficiency or other specifications. Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems remain a central technology towards 6G, and in cases where massive antenna arrays or cell-free networks are not possible to deploy and only moderately large antenna arrays are allowed, the detection problem at the base-station cannot rely on zero-forcing or matched filters and more complex detection schemes have to be used. The main challenge is to find low complexity, hardware feasible methods that are able to attain near optimal performance. Randomized algorithms based on Gibbs sampling (GS) were proven to perform very close to the optimal detection, even for moderately large antenna arrays, while yielding an acceptable number of operations. However, their performance is highly dependent on the chosen "temperature" parameter (TP). In this paper, we propose and study an optimized variant of the GS method, denoted by triple mixed GS, and where three distinct values for the TP are considered. The method exhibits faster convergence rates than the existing ones in the literature, hence requiring fewer iterations to achieve a target bit error rate. The proposed detector is suitable for symmetric large MIMO systems, however the proposed fixed complexity detector is highly suitable to spectrally efficient adaptively modulated MIMO (AM-MIMO) systems where different types of devices upload information at different bit rates or have different requirements regarding spectral efficiency. The proposed receiver is shown to attain quasi-optimal performance in both scenarios.

    Abstract Marine lipids are recognized for their-health promoting features, mainly for being the primary sources of omega-3 fatty acids, and are therefore critical for human nutrition in an age when the global supply for these nutrients is experiencing an unprecedent pressure due to an ever-increasing demand. The seafood industry originates a considerable yield of co-products worldwide that, while already explored for other purposes, remain mostly undervalued as sustainable sources of healthy lipids, often being explored for low-value oil production. These co-products are especially appealing as lipid sources since, besides the well-known nutritional upside of marine animal fat, which is particularly rich in omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, they also have interesting bioactive properties, which may garner them further interest, not only as food, but also for other high-end applications. Besides the added value that these co-products may represent as valuable lipid sources, there is also the obvious ecological upside of reducing seafood industry waste. In this sense, repurposing these bioresources will contribute to a more sustainable use of marine animal food, reducing the strain on already heavily depleted seafood stocks. Therefore, untapping the potential of marine animal co-products as valuable lipid sources aligns with both health and environmental goals by guaranteeing additional sources of healthy lipids and promoting more eco-conscious practices.

    Abstract Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease of multifactorial etiology, characterized by a chronic inflammatory reaction of the joints, but can also affect other tissues. Some environmental factors can trigger an immune system response in genetically susceptible individuals, activating the disease. Lower diversity of gut microbiota, and dysbiosis, have been observed in RA patients. In this regard, approaches to decrease inflammation, and to restore the microbiota, have been suggested. These include oral administration of single probiotics, or probiotic mixtures, on their own, or in combination with drugs. Vitamin K (VitK) is one of the many products of the intestinal microbiota. Lower levels of some forms of VitK have been measured in the serum and stools of RA patients and some studies have found an inverse correlation between VitK levels and the clinical severity of the disease. Additionally, some forms of this vitamin, when given orally, have been shown to exert positive effects in decreasing RA activity, and delaying its onset and progress. This review aims at describing the link between the gut microbiota and RA, focusing on the role of VitK and probiotics as possible adjuvant therapies in this disease.

    Abstract The sea lettuce Ulva spp is becoming an increasingly important macroalgae for aquaculture. Sea lettuce can be grown on- and off-shore, displays high growth rates, and its biomass possesses attractive nutritional benefits. Among those are their fatty acids (FA) and lipid profiles, rich in omega 3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids (PUFAs) as well as bioactive lipids. In order to tailor those properties for food applications, we explored the use of a short-term (seven days) low salinity treatment to modulate the lipid profile of two species of Ulva. We found large quantitative differences between species, and while a low-salinity treatment negatively affected growth, Ulva australis' lipid profile was positively impacted. Total FA particularly ɷ-3 PUFAs, increased three-fold, as well as most polar lipid species including known bioactive compounds. This study highlights profound differences between species and describes a simple method to increase the nutritional properties of Ulva biomass for food applications.

    Abstract Background: Obesity is a serious and largely preventable global health problem. Obesity-related electronic health records can be a useful resource to identify and address obesity. The analysis of real-world data from T82-coded (International Classification of Primary Care coding, for obesity) primary care individuals can be an excellent national source of data on obesity's prevalence, characteristics, and impact on the National Health Service.
    Methods: Retrospective longitudinal study, based on a database of electronic medical records, from the Regional Health Administration of northern Portugal. The study objectives were to determine the prevalence of obesity and to characterize an adult obese population in northern Portugal from a bio-demographic point of view along with profiles of comorbidities and the use of health resources. This study used a database of 266,872 patients in December 2019 and screened for diagnostic code T82 from the International Classification of Primary Care.
    Results: The prevalence of obesity was 10.2% and the highest prevalence of obesity was in the 65-74 age group (16.1%). The most prevalent morbidities in patients with obesity as coded through ICPC-2 were K86 (uncomplicated hypertension), T90 (non-insulin-dependent diabetes), and K87 (complicated hypertension). Descriptive information showed that T82 subjects used more consultations, medications, and diagnostic tests than non-T82 subjects.
    Conclusions: Routine recording of weight and height deserves special attention to allow obesity recognition at an early stage and move on to the appropriate intervention. Future work is necessary to automate the codification of obesity for subjects under 18 years of age, to raise awareness and anticipate the prevention of problems associated with obesity. Practical strategies need to be implemented, such as the creation of a specific program consultation with truly targeted approaches to obesity.

    Abstract Aim: There have been a number of clinical trials in glaucoma research published in the past two decades. Most of these trials were designed to evaluate very specific issues in selected populations placing them in the explanatory end of the pragmatic-explanatory continuum. The purpose of this study was to assess the level of pragmatism of published randomized controlled trials in glaucoma.
    Methods: A PubMed search using 'glaucoma' from 1995 to 2022 and randomized controlled trial (RCT) article type was done. Each study was assessed by three independent examiners using the Pragmatic-Explanatory Continuum Indicator Summary version 2 (PRECIS-2) toolkit. Scores were calculated for each study to determine the level of pragmatism. A summed score ≥36 was indicative of a very pragmatic study.
    Results: Thirty-two different articles were included in the analysis. These papers represented 13 different landmark trials. The median PRECIS-2 score was 32 (range, 25 for the Early Manifest Glaucoma Trial (EMGT) to 34 to the Collaborative Normal Tension Glaucoma Study (CNTGS) and the Ocular Hypertension Treatment Study). The Treatment of Advanced Glaucoma Study (TAGS), was considered very pragmatic and scored 33 points.
    Conclusion: Despite the number of RCTs in glaucoma, there is still a need for more pragmatic studies.
