Abstract Sea ice production within polynyas, an outcome of the atmosphere‐ice‐ocean interaction, is a major source of dense water and hence key to the global overturning circulation, but is poorly quantified over open‐ocean polynyas. Using the two recent extensive open‐ocean polynyas within the wider Maud Rise region of the Weddell Sea in 2016 and 2017, we here explore the sea ice energy budget and estimate their sea ice production based on satellite retrievals, in‐situ hydrographic observations and the Japanese 55‐year Reanalysis. We find that the oceanic heat flux amounts to 36.1 and 30.7 W m⁻² within the 2016 and 2017 polynyas, respectively. Especially the 2017 open‐ocean polynya produced nearly 200 km³ of new sea ice, which is comparable to the production in the largest Antarctic coastal polynyas. Finally, we determine that ice production is highly correlated with and sensitive to skin temperature and wind speed, which affect the turbulent fluxes. It is also strongly sensitive to uncertainties in the sea ice concentration and 1,000 hPa temperature, which all urgently need to be better monitored at high latitudes. Lastly, more process‐oriented campaigns are required to further elucidate the role of open‐ocean polynya on the local and global ocean circulations.

Abstract We use ice flow modelling to simulate the englacial stratigraphy of Blåskimen Island, an ice rise in Dronning Maud Land and elucidate the evolution of this data-sparse region. We apply a thermo-mechanically coupled Elmer/Ice model to a profile along flowlines and through the ice-rise summit, where surface mass balance (SMB), flow velocity and ice stratigraphy were recently measured. We conclude that: (i) the ice rise is presently thickening at a rate of 0.5~0.6 m ice equivalent per year (mieq a−1), which is twice an earlier estimate using the field data and the input–output method; (ii) present thickening started 20–40 years in the past, before which the ice rise was in a steady state; (iii) SMB contrast between the upwind and downwind slopes was stronger than the present value by ~23% (or 0.15 mieq a−1) prior to ~1100 years ago. Since then, this contrast has been decreasing overall. We surmise that these SMB changes are likely a result of synoptic-scale atmospheric changes, rather than local atmospheric changes controlled by local ice topography. Our technique effectively assimilates geophysical data, avoiding the complexity of ice flow beneath the ice divide. Thus, it could be applied to other ice rises to elucidate the recent glacial retreat.

Abstract Abstract Background Multimorbidity is a complex health situation that requires interventions tailored to patient needs; the outcomes of such interventions are difficult to evaluate. The purpose of this study was to describe the outcomes of patient-centred interventions for people with multimorbidity from the patients’ and healthcare providers’ perspectives. Methods This study followed a qualitative descriptive design. Nine patients with multimorbidity and 18 healthcare professionals (nurses, general practitioners, nutritionists, and physical and respiratory therapists), participating in a multimorbidity-adapted intervention in primary care were recruited. Data were collected using semi-structured interviews with 12 open-ended questions. Triangulation of disciplines among interviewers, research team debriefing, data saturation assessment and iterative data collection and analysis ensured a rigorous research process. Results Outcome constructs described by participants covered a wide range of themes and were grouped into seven outcome domains: Health Management, Physical Health, Functional Status, Psychosocial Health, Health-related Behaviours, General Health and Health Services. The description of constructs by stakeholders provides valuable insight on how outcomes are experienced and worded by patients. Conclusion Participants described a wide range of outcome constructs, which were relevant to and observable by patients and were in line with the clinical reality. The description provides a portrait of multimorbidity-adapted intervention outcomes that are significant for the selection and development of clinical research outcome measures.

Abstract DPF3, along with other subunits, is a well-known component of the BAF chromatin remodeling complex that plays a key role in regulating chromatin remodeling activity and gene expression. Here, we elucidated a non-canonical localization and role for DPF3. We showed that DPF3 dynamically localizes to the centriolar satellites in interphase and in centrosome, spindle midzone/bridging fiber area and midbodies during mitosis. Loss of DPF3 causes K-fiber instability, unstable kinetochore-microtubules attachment and defects in chromosome alignment, thus resulting in altered mitotic progression, cell death and genomic instability. In addition, we also demonstrated that DPF3 localizes in centriolar satellites at the basis of primary cilia and is required for ciliogenesis by regulating axoneme extension. Together, these findings uncover a moonlighting dual function for DPF3 during mitosis and ciliogenesis.
