Abstract "Practical, easy-to-follow guidance on every aspect of the diagnosis and treatment of epilepsy in children 350 full-color illustrations Pediatric Epilepsy comprehensively addresses the needs of all physicians treating children with epilepsy -- from the specialized pediatric epileptologist to the general pediatric practitioner. Written by a team of international experts, this full-color text offers a consistent, age-based approach to the diagnosis and treatment of every type of seizure and epilepsy syndrome that may occur in childhood. The book's primary focus is on specific treatment modalities, both surgical and medical.Features Algorithms and drug-dosage tables throughout emphasize patient care Includes first, second, and combination drug treatments with recommended starting ranges and other essential information Specific types of seizures and syndromes are organized by the age group in which they most often present Logically organized by age group, then by the seizures and syndromes that tend to first occur at those ages Co-morbidities section addresses illnesses caused by epilepsy treatment and illnesses that often present with epilepsy treatment International authorship by a team of five award-winning pediatric epileptologists 350 full-color illustrations"--Provided by publisher

Abstract Electrical stimulation mapping is a longstanding practice that aids in identification and delineation of eloquent cortex. Initially used to expand our understanding of the typical human cortex, it now plays a significant role in mapping cortical function in individuals with atypical structural and functional tissue organization undergoing epilepsy surgery. This review discusses the unique challenges that arise in the functional testing of the immature cortex of a child and the parameters of stimulation that optimize accurate results in conventional open implantation and in stereo-electroencephalography. The prerequisite baseline evaluation and preparation recommended to increase the yield from pediatric stimulation mapping sessions is described, as are ideal approaches to the mapping of the sensory, motor, language, and visual cortices.

Abstract High-pressure NMR spectroscopy has become a valuable analytical tool in many activities, including the energy sector, chemical research, and biophysics. Many pressure-based applications could benefit from low-field NMR. In this context, a novel, simple, and low-cost high-pressure tube design improving the signal-to-noise ratio by more than 80% is presented.

Abstract Introduction: Performing epilepsy surgery in a child with a neurodegenerative illness is a relatively unexplored challenge. In this issue of CNS, Lupashko and coauthors report the use of epilepsy surgery to eliminate seizures without influencing the underlying progressive disorder.
Method: Functional hemispherectomy was performed in a 4-year-old girl with seizures caused by Alpers' disease.
Results: Seizure freedom and an improved quality of life were achieved briefly despite deteriorating neurologic status.
Conclusion: Further studies will be needed to confirm the positive benefits of palliative epilepsy surgery in children with progressive neurologic illnesses.
