Abstract A catastrophic Spanish flu pandemic spread throughout the world during 1918-1919. In the spring of 1918, an army training center at the Fort Riley Kansas reported the first cases of Spanish flu in the United States. The first reported cases of the Spanish Flu of the virus in Kansas were quite moderate. The Spanish flu took an ominous turn in the fall of 1918 when injured soldiers who contracted the Spanish flu returned to the United States, spreading the illness across urban and rural communities. During this period of the Spanish flu, the freemason lodges served as accessory hospitals to help manage the growing Spanish flu cases across the United States. In this paper, we explore the experiences, challenges, and lessons from Freemason lodges during the Spanish flu to provide context and historical insights into the overlaps between the Spanish Flu and the current COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract Background: Genetic counseling is an essential and pertinent field in any society to lower the prevalence of hereditary disorders. However, the desire to undergo counseling and genetic testing varies widely depending on the cultural background and level of scientific literacy of the individual. In this survey, we examine the perspectives of medical students on clinical genetic testing based upon their religious tradition.
Methods: The total number of participants in the study was 257 (122 male and 135 female) second year medical students at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC). The distribution of religious identification (Atheist, Christian, Hindu, Jewish, Muslim, Spiritual/not Affiliated, and Other) among the second-year medical students. The survey was available to students through TTUHSC's Omnibus survey program for a period of two weeks.
Results: Most of the second-year medical students interviewed identified as being Christian (67%) with the next highest religious identification being Spiritual/not Affiliated (9%), Atheist (8%), and Muslim (6%). With regards to genetic tests, most of the students (95%), regardless of religious identification, have not used any commercial genetic testing services. Most second year medical students regardless of religious affiliation had similar agreement with questions regarding clinical genetic testing. However, there was a similar drop in agreement when it came on where students would want genetic screening to be performed regularly in clinics/hospitals.
Conclusion: Given the numerous factors that must be considered, such as the patient's attitudes, knowledge, and beliefs towards the counseling process and genetic testing, genetic counseling is a challenging problem. Each target population's history, relevant exposure to, and domain expertise must be considered while promoting decision-making in genetic testing.

Abstract One of the first modern practitioners of modern vaccination was Edward Jenner, whose work constituted a significant advancement in smallpox prevention. Since his discovery, issues surrounding vaccine mandates have sparred against the greater American principles of self-reliance, independence, and autonomy over one's body. This paper examines medical training and practice during 19th century America through the letters of a well-known physician named Dr. Albert G. Mackey. These letters provide a glimpse into the attitudes and public health practices of 19th century medical professionals, most notably related to variolizations against smallpox. Furthermore, this exploration of Mackey's writings provides insights into early controversies on safety and government vaccine mandates, which resemble many aspects of the current debates surrounding the COVID-19 vaccine mandates.

Abstract Almost every medical school's graduation ceremony includes some sort of professional medical oath. The Hippocratic Oath, written over 2400 years ago, is the oldest and most well-known of these vows. The essential components of modern medical ethics-beneficence, nonmaleficence, autonomy, and justice-outlined in the Hippocratic Oath persist to this day. The substance of the Hippocratic Oath has been altered and its authorship questioned, yet the major world religions, Baha'i, Buddhism, Christianity, Confucianism, Hinduism, Islam, Jainism, Judaism, Shinto, Sikhism, Taoism, and Zoroastrianism, had versions of the Hippocratic Oath to emphasize the importance of beneficence, nonmaleficence, autonomy, and justice for newly initiated physicians. By investigating these alternative versions of the Hippocratic Oath, similarities between different faiths emerge, reinforcing a common thread of humanity that spans across time.

Abstract The mural of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh contains a unique symbol of an eye placed in the palm of a hand. The symbol is known by many names-the Eye of Providence, the All-Seeing Eye, and the Eye of Horus-and has been a central symbol of religious and medical organizations across many cultures, including Egyptian, British, Indian, and American. The symbol is also representative of the Hamsa. In Arabic cultures, the Hamsa is a palm-shaped amulet that is popular in jewelry and wall hangings. It is a symbol of protection against evil. Both symbols have an important history with regards to medical practice. This paper examines the history of the Eye of Providence and the Hamsa with regard to their use and meaning within the medical profession.

Abstract President William Howard Taft is remembered as being the largest US president and a Freemason. However, Taft's work and legacy in public health are often overlooked by his predecessor, Theodore Roosevelt, and the ensuing political scuffle both held towards each other at the end of Taft's presidency. Taft's many chronic illnesses, most notably his obesity, made visitations and long-distance communication with over 30 physicians, including Sir William Osler, a regular occurrence through this life. Yet Taft's struggles with his health and his beliefs as a freemason were deeply rooted in his appreciation for health care and public health measures. This article aims to explore the motivations and contributions of Taft to public health initiatives to explore the impact public health has had in the past and continues to have in the modern COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract In Freemasonry, each degree represents the refining and transformation of the individual through a unique set of working tools that symbolize the progression of lessons from an entered apprentice to a master mason. For a fellowcraft, the lessons are represented by the tools of the square, level, and plumb. With these tools, masons are reminded how to conduct themselves and interact with others. The application of the fellowcraft working tools to medical practice emphasizes aspects of the physician-patient relationship and the ethical treatment of patients.

Abstract By developing their character and philosophy, Freemasons have sought to improve their communities and society through the arts, sciences, humanities, and other fields and have made important contributions. Freemason physicians such as Alexander Fleming, Charles Mayo, William Withering, and Edward Jenner have left a medical legacy that still impacts our daily lives. The foundation of Freemasonry beliefs is taught through two primary symbols, known as the working tools of an entered apprentice mason: the 24-inch gauge and common gavel. The meaning behind each of the working tools has parallels to the education and professional standards embodied within the medical profession.
