Abstract Objective: To explore the scientificity of Yunqi theory based on incidence of disease related recognitions such as year evolutive phase, host climatic qi, six climatic factors, celestial manager qi, qi in the earth by analyzing data of hypertension incidence.
Methods: A total of 1,265 inpatients with confirmed first diagnosis as hypertension were recruited at Dongzhimen Hospital, Beijing University of Chinese Medicine from February 4, 1999 to February 4, 2011. Each period (including year evolutive phase, host climatic qi, guest climatic qi) was deducted based on Yun-qi theory. Their ratios of different phases and qi in the total number of hypertension inpatients number were calculated and statistically tested.
Results: There was statistical difference in ratios at year evolutive phase, celestial manager qi, and qi in the earth (P < 0.05).
Conclusion: The incidence of hypertension has certain difference in each period, which is consistent with Yun-qi theory.

Abstract Background/objective: Atopic dermatitis comprises a group of chronic, relapsing inflammatory conditions. Topical steroids (TS) can ameliorate atopic dermatitis but induce skin atrophy and secondary infection. Tzu-Yun ointment (TYO) was used widely for skin ulcers and pus discharges. This study sought to determine whether TYO can replace TS therapy for atopic dermatitis.
Methods: This preliminary, randomized, controlled, open-label design compared the therapeutic effects of TS and TYO in patients with atopic dermatitis; 33 patients were randomly assigned to the TS group (17 patients) and the TYO group (16 patients). All patients received an 8-week TS or TYO treatment. Primary outcome measures were assessed by using the Eczema Area and Severity Index (EASI) and Three Item Severity (TIS) before the treatment (baseline, week 0) and 1 week (week 1), 2 weeks (week 2), 4 weeks (week 4), and 8 weeks (week 8) after initiation of the treatment.
Results: Of the 33 enrolled patients, 31 (16 in the TS group and 15 in the TYO group) completed the study. Patients in both groups showed decreased EASI and TIS scores, with no significant difference at weeks 0, 1, 2, 4, and 8.
Conclusion: TYO may be as effective as TS therapy for atopic dermatitis and has potential as an alternative treatment for this condition.

Abstract Drought is one of the most serious natural disasters in the world and causes great economic losses in China every year, especially in its southwest region. Yet, few studies have reported the quantitative comprehensive risk of drought in the Yunnan, Guizhou, and Guangxi provinces of China. Taking these three provinces as the study area, we obtained annual precipitation, disaster loss, and agricultural planting data during 1964–2013. Following an optimal estimation of annual precipitation by the Bayesian maximum entropy method, we mapped the annual Standardized Precipitation Index. Based on the theory of information diffusion and exceeding probability, the hazard of drought was evaluated. We also fit the vulnerability curves using the drought loss data. As a basis, we constructed a multiplicative formula to calculate the comprehensive risk of drought, which integrates the hazard and the vulnerability and produces drought loss rate (DLR) maps. We found that the DLR caused by mild drought was about 3%, moderate drought 10%, severe drought 25%, and extreme drought 50%. We also created a risk zoning map to provide practical information, such as a scientific basis for optimization of regional allocation of resources for drought preparedness and response.

Abstract Both Yun Tie-qiao and Lu Yuan-lei are medical professionals coming from the literary field with versatile and in-depth knowledge and extensive experience in medical education and clinical practice, all closely related to modern TCM development. Yun, the elder, insisted on reforming TCM and was early to advocate the academic idea of amalgamating western and traditional Chinese medicine; while Lu, the younger, insisted on the idea of "scientizing TCM" and was the representative of amalgamating western and traditional Chinese medicine in the later stage. They shared many common viewpoints, including venerating Zhang Zhongjing, stressing exogenous cold pathogens, advocating reformation and amalgamation of western medicine and TCM and objecting to the abolishment of TCM. However, there were discrepancies between them, including the relationship between the Inner Canon and the Essay on Exogenous Cold Diseases, warm disease theory, pulse theory, titles of TCM diseases and Japanese Kampo medicine. A comparison of them and noting their valuable contributions will be beneficial for the promotion of the development of TCM.

Abstract Background and aim: Functional constipation is a common functional bowel disorder for which there is no reliable medical treatment. This study was designed to determine the therapeutic efficacy and safety of the Yun-chang capsule, a Chinese herbal formula, in the treatment of patients with functional constipation.
Methods: In our multi-center, prospective, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, dose-escalation trial, patients with functional constipation received 70 mg of Yun-chang capsule plus 35 mg placebo (group A), 105 mg of Yun-chang capsule (group B), or 105 mg placebo (group C), three times daily for 2 weeks. The primary end-points were the changes in main symptom score and cumulative symptom score 2 weeks after the treatment. The secondary end-points were adverse events.
Results: A total of 140 patients were recruited and 132 met the inclusion criteria; 44 patients constituted each of the three treatment groups. Compared with patients in group C, patients in groups A and B had significant improvement in the main symptom score, cumulative symptom score, the change from baseline of the main symptom score, and the change from baseline of the cumulative symptom score at week 1 and week 2. The scores showed slight superiority of group B over group A at week 1 and week 2, although these differences were not statistically significant. There were no differences in adverse events.
Conclusions: The Yun-chang capsule is efficacious and safe for the treatment of patients with functional constipation. Larger and longer-term trials are required to fully assess the benefits and safety of this treatment for functional constipation.

Abstract Objective: To evaluate the diversity of germplasm resources of Artemisia annua and provide the basis for improving utilization of germplasm resources, the agronomic traits of germplasm resources of A. annua were studied in Yun-Gui plateau.
Method: The agronomic traits of 67 A. annua germplasm resources were measured by the visual observation and measurement methods. And the germplasm resources were clustered using flexible-beta method to analysis their genetic background.
Result: The result showed that 67 germplasm resources had a relatively wide variation on the 22 agronomic traits. Among 22 agronomic traits, the dry weight of branch had the greatest coefficient of variation, which was 53. 63, and the next were the dry weight of leaf, total plant weight, the length of pinnules and the length of leaflet, which were 42.74, 41.61, 39.54 and 39.22 respectively. The smallest coefficient of variation was the leaf corlor. Based the result of cluster analysis, these 67 germplasm resources were classed into 5 groups, and each group had its respective character. The first group showed early-maturing resources, dwarf stalk, slender rod, long bipinnata, high leaf-stem ratio and moderate leaf weight The third group showed late-maturing resources, tall and thick stalk, much-branch, bushy accessory pinna, high leaf weight and yield. The fifth group showed very late-maturing resources, strong lateral shoot, high leaf yield.
Conclusion: There were significant genetic difference and diversity in the germplasm resources of A. annua. The result of cluster analysis showed that the resources of group 1, group 3 and group 5 were suitable as breeding material of A. annua.
