    Abstract The interaction and coevolution between nuclear and cytoplasmic genomes are one of the fundamental hallmarks of eukaryotic genome evolution and, 2 billion yr later, are still major contributors to the formation of new species. Although many studies have investigated the role of cytonuclear interactions following allopolyploidization, the relative magnitude of the effect of subgenome dominance versus cytonuclear interaction on genome evolution remains unclear. The Brassica triangle of U features 3 diploid species that together have formed 3 separate allotetraploid species on similar evolutionary timescales, providing an ideal system for understanding the contribution of the cytoplasmic donor to hybrid polyploid. Here, we investigated the evolutionary pattern of organelle-targeted genes in Brassica carinata (BBCC) and 2 varieties of Brassica juncea (AABB) at the whole-genome level, with particular focus on cytonuclear enzyme complexes. We found partial evidence that plastid-targeted genes experience selection to match plastid genomes, but no obvious corresponding signal in mitochondria-targeted genes from these 2 separately formed allopolyploids. Interestingly, selection acting on plastid genomes always reduced the retention rate of plastid-targeted genes encoded by the B subgenome, regardless of whether the Brassica nigra (BB) subgenome was contributed by the paternal or maternal progenitor. More broadly, this study illustrates the distinct selective pressures experienced by plastid- and mitochondria-targeted genes, despite a shared pattern of inheritance and natural history. Our study also highlights an important role for subgenome dominance in allopolyploid genome evolution, even in genes whose function depends on separately inherited molecules.

    Abstract Optical biosensors are frontrunners for the rapid and real-time detection of analytes, particularly for low concentrations. Among them, whispering gallery mode (WGM) resonators have recently attracted a growing focus due to their robust optomechanical features and high sensitivity, measuring down to single binding events in small volumes. In this review, we provide a broad overview of WGM sensors along with critical advice and additional "tips and tricks" to make them more accessible to both biochemical and optical communities. Their structures, fabrication methods, materials, and surface functionalization chemistries are discussed. We propose this reflection under a pedagogical approach to describe and explain these biochemical sensors with a particular focus on the most recent achievements in the field. In addition to highlighting the advantages of WGM sensors, we also discuss and suggest strategies to overcome their current limitations, leaving room for further development as practical tools in various applications. We aim to provide new insights and combine different knowledge and perspectives to advance the development of the next generation of WGM biosensors. With their unique advantages and compatibility with different sensing modalities, these biosensors have the potential to become major game changers for biomedical and environmental monitoring, among many other relevant target applications.

    Abstract Introduction: Computed tomography (CT) can be effective for the early screening and diagnosis of COVID-19. This study aimed to investigate the distinctive CT characteristics of two stages of the disease (progression and remission).
    Methods: We included all COVID-19 patients admitted to Wenzhou Central Hospital from January to February, 2020. Patients underwent multiple chest CT scans at intervals of 3-10 days. CT features were recorded, such as the lesion lobe, distribution characteristics (subpleural, scattered or diffused), shape of the lesion, maximum size of the lesion, lesion morphology (ground-glass opacity, GGO) and consolidation features. When consolidation was positive, the boundary was identified to determine its clarity.
    Results: The ratios of some representative features differed between the remission stage and the progression phase, such as round-shape lesion (8.0% vs 34.4%), GGO (65.0% vs 87.5%), consolidation (62.0% vs 31.3%), large cable sign (59.0% vs 9.4%) and crazy-paving sign (20.0% vs 50.0%). Using these features, we pooled all the CT data (n = 132) and established a logistic regression model to predict the current development stage. The variables consolidation, boundary feature, large cable sign and crazy-paving sign were the most significant factors, based on a variable named "prediction of progression or remission" (PPR) that we constructed. The ROC curve showed that PPR had an AUC of 0.882 (cutoff value = 0.66, sensitivity = 0.75, specificity = 0.875).
    Conclusion: CT characteristics, in particular, round shape, GGO, consolidation, large cable sign, and crazy-paving sign, may increase the recognition of the intrapulmonary development of COVID-19.

    Abstract In this study, the influence of cooling rate on the freeze-thaw stability, rheological and tribological properties of interfacial crystalized oleogel emulsion was investigated. Results showed that slower cooling rate could promote formation of larger crystals and stronger network in oleogels. Additionally, oleogel emulsions showed higher freeze-thaw stability than those stabilized solely by emulsifiers. The slower cooling rate resulted in larger crystals adsorbed at the droplet surface. This led to greater steric hindrance that prevented the migration of oil droplets with higher resistance to disruption by ice crystals. The rheological and tribological measurements suggested that with appropriate amount of crystals, the tribological properties were better maintained for emulsions prepared at slow cooling rate after freeze-thaw treatment. This strategy greatly enriched oleogel emulsion formulations and provided important clues for potential applications in food products involved with freeze-thaw treatment.

    Abstract Temperature is one of the most fundamental physical properties to characterize various physical, chemical, and biological processes. Even a slight change in temperature could have an impact on the status or dynamics of a system. Thus, there is a great need for high-precision and large-dynamic-range temperature measurements. Conventional temperature sensors encounter difficulties in high-precision thermal sensing on the submicron scale. Recently, optical whispering-gallery mode (WGM) sensors have shown promise for many sensing applications, such as thermal sensing, magnetic detection, and biosensing. However, despite their superior sensitivity, the conventional sensing method for WGM resonators relies on tracking the changes in a single mode, which limits the dynamic range constrained by the laser source that has to be fine-tuned in a timely manner to follow the selected mode during the measurement. Moreover, we cannot derive the actual temperature from the spectrum directly but rather derive a relative temperature change. Here, we demonstrate an optical WGM barcode technique involving simultaneous monitoring of the patterns of multiple modes that can provide a direct temperature readout from the spectrum. The measurement relies on the patterns of multiple modes in the WGM spectrum instead of the changes of a particular mode. It can provide us with more information than the single-mode spectrum, such as the precise measurement of actual temperatures. Leveraging the high sensitivity of WGMs and eliminating the need to monitor particular modes, this work lays the foundation for developing a high-performance temperature sensor with not only superior sensitivity but also a broad dynamic range.

    Abstract Background: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a complex autoimmune connective tissue disease (CTD) that is an important cause of devastating pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), and persistent progression of PAH can lead to right heart failure, predicting a poor prognosis for SLE patients. Right ventricular-pulmonary arterial (RV-PA) coupling with echocardiography has been demonstrated to be a noninvasive alternative method for evaluating PAH patients' predictive outcomes. Whether the ratio of right ventricular stroke volume (RVSV) to right ventricular end-systolic volume (RVESV) measured by three-dimensional echocardiography (3DE) is a new index of RV-PA coupling has not been discussed as a new predictor for the clinical outcome of systemic lupus erythematosus-associated pulmonary arterial hypertension (SLE-PAH).
    Methods: From June 2019 to February 2023, 46 consecutive patients with SLE-PAH were enrolled prospectively, and their clinical data and echocardiographs were studied and analyzed. The control group consisted of 30 healthy subjects matched for age, sex, and body surface area (BSA). The main endpoints of this study were a composite of all-cause mortality and adverse clinical events. Baseline clinical characteristics and echocardiographic assessments were analyzed.
    Results: During a median of 24 months (IQR 18-31), 16 of 46 SLE-PAH patients (34.7%) experienced endpoint-related events. At baseline, patients who experienced mortality or adverse events had a worse WHO functional class (WHO FC) and lower anti-double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) antibody levels. The right ventricular (RV) systolic dysfunction in SLE-PAH subjects was significantly worse than that in the healthy control group, especially in SLE-PAH patients in the endpoint event group. Compared to controls, patients with SLE-PAH had a lower RVSV/RVESV ratio. In the group comparison, patients who had experienced an endpoint event had a sequentially worse ratio (1.86 (1.65-2.3) versus 1.30 (1.09-1.46) versus 0.64 (0.59-0.67),
    Conclusions: The 3DE-derived SV/ESV ratio as a noninvasive alternative surrogate of RV-PA coupling was an eximious indicator for identifying endpoint events in SLE-PAH patients and can provide a diagnostic basis for clinical intervention.

    Abstract Background: Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) can be seen in people of all ages. CRS heavily affects the quality of a patient's daily life and also causes tremendous economic burdens on patients' families and society. The prevalence of CRS in different countries varies and no systematic review of the prevalence of CRS among Chinese has been published previously. The objective of this systematic review and meta-analysis is to determine the prevalence of CRS among Chinese and to explore the main risk factors of CRS among Chinese.
    Methods: Using relevant keywords, data resources including PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Google Scholar, Embase, Cochrane Library, Chinese National Knowledge of Infrastructure (CNKI), WANGFANG, VIP, and China Biomedical Literature database (CMB) were searched to obtain literature reporting the prevalence of and risk factors of CRS among Chinese which were clearly diagnosed with CRS from inception to 30 June 2022.     Conclusion: This meta-analysis shows that the prevalence of CRS among Chinese is at a high level. People who have some risk factors, such as occasional or frequent or everyday exposure to moldy or damp environments, have a higher prevalence of CRS. We should attach more importance to the risk factors of CRS in clinical practice and disseminate scientific information and carry out education to lower the prevalence of CRS in China.
