    Abstract Objectives: This work aimed to study the effects of Yi Jin Jing plus Elastic Band Resistance exercise on bone mineral density at all parts of the body and bone metabolism index levels in postmenopausal women.
    Design: Randomized controlled trial.
    Methods: Forty postmenopausal women were randomly assigned equally to the exercise or to the control group. The control group maintained their lifestyle behaviors unaltered, whereas the exercise group received  Yi Jin Jing plus Elastic Band Resistance exercise. The primary outcome was overall bone mineral density at each part, and the secondary one was bone metabolism indicator levels and bone mineral density on both sides.
    Results: The results after six months showed increased bone mineral density at all parts of the body in the exercise group (spine, P = 0.002; thighs, lumbar, and whole body, P < 0.05) and decreased bone mineral density in the control group (trunk, pelvis, and spine, P < 0.01). In particular, the decrease and increase were greater on the non-preferred (left) side than on the right side. As for bone metabolism indexes, β-Crosslaps levels reduced (P = 0.016) and a significant increase in 1,25-(OH)2-D3 (P < 0.001) can be observed in the exercise group.
    Conclusions: The results suggested that Yi Jin Jing plus Elastic Band Resistance exercise could delay the overall decrease of bone mineral density in postmenopausal women, especially on the non-preferred side. It also increased bone formation metabolite levels and inhibited bone resorption metabolite levels.

    Abstract This study investigated the effects of the Cong Rong Shu Jing (CRSJ) compound on endoplasmic reticulum stress in a rat model of Parkinson's disease (PD). A total of 40 rats were subcutaneously injected with rotenone-sunflower oil emulsion into the back of the neck to establish a rat model of PD. These PD rats were randomly divided into low-, medium-, and high-dose groups (intragastric administration of 0.5, 1, and 2 g/kg CRSJ, respectively) and a model group (intragastric administration of the solvent; 10 rats per group). Furthermore, 10 rats each were attributed to the control and vehicle groups (both received intragastric administration of the CRSJ solvent, and the vehicle group were injected additionally with sunflower oil alone). A traction test was conducted two times, after the PD model establishment and after 14 days of CRSJ gavage. The numbers of tyrosine hydroxylase- (TH-) positive cells and the dopamine levels in the substantia nigra were assessed using immunohistochemistry and high-performance liquid chromatography, respectively.     Abstract Objective: The quality evaluation of herbal products remains a big challenge. Traceable markers are the core concept of the authentication of herbal products. However, the discovery of traceable markers is labor-intensive and time-consuming. The aim of this study is to develop a convenient approach to rapidly screen the traceable markers for herbal product authentication.
    Methods: Commercial Jing Liqueur and its 22 species of herbal ingredients were analyzed using HPLC-QTOF-MS and GC-MS to characterize nonvolatile and volatile chemicals. The acquired data were imported into MZmine 2 software for mass detection, chromatogram building, deconvolution and alignment. The aligned data were exported into a csv file and then traceable markers were selected using the built-in filter function in Excel. Finally, the traceable markers were identified by searching against online databases or publications, some of which were confirmed by reference standards.
    Results: A total of 288 chemical features transferred from herbal materials to Jing Liqueur product were rapidly screened out. Among them, 52 markers detected by HPLC-QTOF-MS were annotated, while nine volatile markers detected by GC-MS were annotated. Moreover, 30 of these markers were confirmed by comparing with reference standards. A chemical fingerprint consisting of traceable markers was finally generated to ensure the authentication and quality consistency of Jing Liqueur.
    Conclusion: A strategy for rapid discovery of traceable markers in herbal products using MZmine 2 software was developed.

    Abstract Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic nonspecific inflammation mainly involving rectum and colon mucosa, which seriously affects the health and quality of life of patients, and is listed as one of modern refractory diseases by WHO. Professor XU Jing-fan, a great master of traditional Chinese medicine, has accumulated rich experiences in the treatment of UC. The study collected Professor XU's 77 prescriptions of treating UC, analyzed the frequency of traditional Chinese medicines and there categories, and investigated the medication regularity by the system clustering method. The findings showed that the most frequently used drugs were clearing-heat herbs, which were followed by hemostatic herbs, excreting-dampness herbs, improving-digestion herbs and tonifying-Qi herbs. At the same time, the commonly combined drugs were excavated. Finally, in order to analyze potential molecular targets of the frequently used herbs, GO enrichment analysis and KEGG signal pathway enrichment analysis were performed with bioinformatics analysis tool for molecular mechanism of traditional Chinese medicine (BATMAN-TCM). The results indicated that Chinese herbal compounds may treat UC by activating PPAR-γ pathway and regulating intestinal inflammation. The exact mechanisms shall be verified through subsequent molecular biological experiments.

    Abstract This study investigated the effects of the Cong Rong Shu Jing (CRSJ) compound on endoplasmic reticulum stress in a rat model of Parkinson's disease (PD). Western blotting detected the expression levels of α-synuclein, endoplasmic reticulum stress pathways-related proteins, cerebral dopamine neurotrophic factor (CDNF), mesencephalic astrocyte-derived neurotrophic factor (MANF), and phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K)/protein kinase B (AKT) pathway-related proteins. Compared with the model group, the number of TH-positive cells in the substantia nigra was increased in the CRSJ groups. The expression levels of α-synuclein and the endoplasmic reticulum stress pathways-associated proteins glucose regulatory protein 78, inositol-requiring enzyme 1, apoptosis signal-regulating kinase 1, phosphorylated c-Jun N-terminal kinase, and caspase-12 were reduced. However, CRSJ administration elevated the expression levels of the neurotrophic factors CDNF and MANF, as well as those of p-PI3K and p-AKT.     Abstract The aim of this study is to identify the minor compounds in Jing liqueur, determine the concentration of metals, amino acids, and polysaccharides, and evaluate their Nrf2 activity and cytotoxicity. Jing liqueur that contains Chinese medicine is one of the best-selling liqueurs in China, which is also marketed in the United States. Totally, we have isolated 189 minor compounds including one new molecule (7) from a concentrated Jing liqueur, with the concentrations of most isolated compounds at micromolar levels. The structures of all these compounds were determined by using MS and NMR (1D and 2D) or by comparison of their chemical and physical data with reported values in the literatures. Besides, the concentrations of iron (0.52 mg/L), zinc (0.21 mg/L), calcium (11.0 mg/L), L-proline (2.33 mg/L), L-arginine (1.73 mg/L), total amino acids (9.84 mg/L), and total polysaccharides (337.4 mg/L) were determined. Jing liqueur, the five fractions and most of the compounds isolated from Jing liqueur were screened for their activities in the Nrf2-ARE and MTT assays. At 5.2 mg/mL the crude enhanced the Nrf2 activity. At 80 μg/mL, fraction IV weakly but fraction V strongly activated Nrf2. Among the compounds screened in the Nrf2 assay, eighteen activated Nrf2 at 40 μg/mL and compounds 51 and 126 from fraction V were the most active. The crude, all the five fractions, and Nrf2 activators were not cytotoxic toward HepG2 cells. In conclusion, Jing liqueur contains different classes of compounds including flavonoids, terpenoids, alkaloids, coumarins, cinnamic acid or coumaric acid, and phenyl ethanol (or acetic acid) derivatives, benzoquinone, naphthoquinone, anthraquinones or phenanphrene derivatives, xanthones, chromone, and γ-pyrone derivatives, lignans, other aromatic compounds, and others. Jing liqueur and the eighteen compounds, which were isolated from Jing liqueur, could activate Nrf2 without any cytotoxicity.

    Abstract With the average life span of humans on the rise, aging in the world has drawn considerable attentions. The monoamine neurotransmitters and neurotrophic factors in brain areas are involved in learning and memory processes and are an essential part of normal synaptic neurotransmission and plasticity. In the present study, the effect of Zhuang Jing Decoction (ZJD) on the learning and memory ability in aging rats was examined in vivo using Morris water maze. Furthermore, the levels of monoamine neurotransmitters and neurotrophic factors in brain were detected by high-performance liquid chromatography with a fluorescence detector and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, respectively. These data showed that oral administration with ZJD at the dose of 30 g·kg(-1) exerted an improved effect on learning and memory ability in aging rats. The results revealed that ZJD could effectively adjust the monoamine neurotransmitters and neurotrophic factors, restore the balance of the level of monoamine neurotransmitters and neurotrophic factors in brain, and finally attenuate the degeneration of learning and memory ability. These findings suggested that ZJD might be a potential agent as cognitive-enhancing drug in improving learning and memory ability. It may exert through regulating the levels of monoamine neurotransmitters and neurotrophic factors in brain, which demonstrated that ZJD had certain antiaging effects.

    Abstract As the epitome of the modern regenerative medicine, stem cells were proposed in the basic sense no more than 200 years ago. However, the concept of "stem cells" existed long before the modern medical description. The hypothesis that all things, including our sentient body, were generated from a small origin was shared between Western and Chinese people. The ancient Chinese philosophers considered Jing (also known as essence) as the origin of life. In Chinese medicine (CM), Jing is mainly stored in Kidney (Shen) and the so-called Shen-Jing (Kidney essence). Here, we propose that Shen-Jing is the CM term used to express the meaning of "origin and regeneration". This theoretical discovery has at least two applications. First, the actions underlying causing Shen-Jing deficiency, such as excess sexual intercourse, chronic diseases, and aging, might damage the function of stem cells. Second, a large number of Chinese herbs with Shen-Jing-nourishing efficacy had been proven to affect stem cell proliferation and differentiation. Therefore, if Shen-Jing in CM is equivalent with stem cells in regenerative medicine, higher effective modulators for regulating stem-cell behaviors from Kidney-tonifying herbs would be expected.
