Abstract Dissolved oxygen (DO), were investigated. Aerobic conditions were effectively developed in 50 cm depth of the matrix and anoxic or anaerobic conditions were not changed in 80 and 110 cm depth by intermittent aeration, which encouraged nitrification. Increased influent COD/N ratio led to lower COD and nitrogen removal in conventional SWISs. Sufficient carbon source in high COD/N ratio influent promoted denitrification with intermittent aeration. High removal rates of COD (95.68 ± 0.21%), TP (92.02 ± 0.28%), ‐N (99.33 ± 0.05%), and ‐ (89.65 ± 0.6%) were obtained with influent COD/N ratio of 12 in aerated SWISs. Under the COD/N ratio of 12 and 18, intermittent aeration boosted the growth and reproduction of nitrifying bacteria and denitrifying bacteria. Meanwhile, nitrate and nitrite reductase activities with intermittent aeration were higher than that without aeration in 80 and 110 cm depths.

Abstract To shed light on the scope and limitations of palladium-catalyzed allylic alkylation in the presence of chiral trans-1,2-diaminocyclohexane-derived Fei-Phos as an effective phosphine ligand, the asymmetric palladium-catalysed alkylation of structurally diverse hard/soft nucleophiles, including allylic etherification of alcohols and the allylic alkylation of activated methylene compounds, indoles, and aromatic amines were investigated in this study; the corresponding products with various functional groups were achieved in good yield and with high enantioselectivity (up to 99% ee).

Abstract To shield light on the mechanism of palladium-catalyzed allylic substitutions with structurally diverse nucleophiles (up to 99% ee) in the presence of Fei-Phos ligand (chiral trans-1,2-diaminocyclohexane-derived biphosphine, CycloN2P2-Phos) as an effective chiral P-ligand, mechanistic studies were performed for clarification of the role of multifunctional Fei-Phos in this reaction. The cooperative action of nitrogen and phosphorous atoms in the present Pd-catalyzed allylic alkylation is proved to be a diphosphine-based catalyst system but not a nitrogen-controlled or monophosphine-involved transition state.

Abstract Aims/introduction: Urotensin II (UII) and autophagy have been considered as important components in the pathogenesis of diabetic nephropathy. The present study explores whether UII can regulate autophagy in the kidney, and its effect in diabetes.
Materials and methods: Immunohistochemistry and western blot were carried out on the kidney tissues of diabetic UII receptor (UT) gene knockout mice, wild-type diabetic mice and normal control mice. For the in vitro experiment, HK-2 cells were treated with UII (10
Results: In diabetic UT knockout mice, expression of LC3-II is increased and p62 was reduced in comparison with that of the normal diabetic mice. Fibronectin and collagen IV were downregulated in diabetic UT knockout mice when compared with that of the normal diabetic mice. For the in vitro cell experiment, UII was shown to inhibit expression LC3-II and increase expression of p62 in comparison with that of the normal control. Treatment with SB-657510 can block UII-induced downregulation of LC3-II and upregulation of p62 while inhibiting UII-induced upregulation of fibronectin and collagen IV. Adding autophagy inducer, rapamycin, also inhibited UII-induced upregulation of fibronectin and collagen IV.
Conclusions: The present study is the first to show that UII can downregulate autophagy in the kidney while accompanying the increased production of extracellular matrix in early diabetes. Our in vitro study also showed that upregulation of autophagy can decrease UII-induced production of extracellular matrix in HK-2 cells.
