Abstract Abstract: Pleomorphic adenoma usually presents as a painless growing mass in locations of the salivary glands and is notorious for local recurrence if previous surgical resection is incomplete. Schwannoma is a benign peripheral nerve tumor with microscopic features of sheets of spindle-shaped cells with nuclear palisading. However, when a pathologist encounters a salivary gland tumor with microscopic morphological features of biphasic components with areas of schwannoma-like morphology, it is crucial to make a prudent diagnosis by differentiating Schwannoma-like pleomorphic adenoma and its differential diagnosis as they have remarkably different outcome in patients. We herein present a case of Schwannoma-like pleomorphic adenoma and discuss its approach to diagnosis and literature search.

Abstract Lipomatosis of nerve, earlier known as fibrolipomatous hamartoma is a rare condition which predominantly affects peripheral nerves, cranial nerve involvement being extremely uncommon. Preoperative consideration of this entity is of paramount importance as its inadvertent complete surgical resection may inevitably result in significant neurological deficit. We report a case of trigeminal lipomatosis in a young patient with trigeminal neuralgia.

Abstract Ishwar Singh speaks to Benjamin Walden, Commissioning Editor. Ishwar Singh is Senior Lecturer in biological chemistry at the School of Pharmacy, University of Lincoln. Prior to Lincoln, he had held many prestigious fellowships such as the Alexander von Humboldt fellowship, Germany; and Senior Research Fellowship, DANIDA, Denmark and CSIR, India. He is an organic chemist. He has developed bioconjugations for DNA, RNA and polymer modifications. He is currently leading research in novel antimicrobials based on rational design against clinically important resistant bacteria (such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, vancomycin-resistant enterococci, mycobacteria, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Acinetobacter baumannii and Pseudomonas aeruginosa), biologics delivery, peptides, sequence-selective DNA cross linking, nanoparticles modifications for drug delivery and diagnostic applications.

Abstract N-heterocyclic carbene ligands (NHCs) are increasingly used to tune the properties of metal surfaces. The generally greater chemical and thermal robustness of NHCs on gold, as compared to thiolate surface ligands, underscores their potential for a range of applications. While much is now known about the adsorption geometry, overlayer structure, dynamics, and stability of NHCs on coinage elements, especially gold and copper, much less is known about their interaction with the surfaces of Pt-group metals, despite the importance of such metals in catalysis and electrochemistry. In this study, reflection absorption infrared spectroscopy (RAIRS) is used to probe the structure of benzimidazolylidene NHC ligands on Pt(111) and Ru(0001). The experiments exploit the intense absorption peaks of a CF

Abstract Organic agriculture is a promising solution to sustainably improve crop yields. For several crops, yield from organic farming have been recorded to be lower than yield from conventional farming. However, such data is context dependent and there is very little information on performance of organic systems in the tropics. Particularly, solid data on the benefits and drawbacks of organic agriculture in the tropics is still missing. In 2007, we set up a long-term farming system comparison trials (LTE) for cotton systems in Madhya Pradesh India. Cotton is the main cash crop in our region and is grown in a two-year crop rotation. The other crops grown with cotton in our region are chickpea, wheat and soybean. In our field trials we are comparing the following treatments: (i) organic, (ii) bio dynamic, (iii) conventional, and (iv) BT conventional (genetically modified) cotton. We have been taking data on multiple parameters such as crop yields, soil nutrients, soil microbial properties and system profitability. Our data indicates that with good management organic systems can become more sustainable than conventional systems both economically and ecologically. Multiple indicators in our trials show this; the performance of crops has improved over the years, reducing the profitability gap between organic and conventional farming systems. In addition, positive impacts on soil fertility indicators (e.g., soil organic carbon) are detectable after 10–12 years in our organic LTE systems. We have also recorded our organic systems to harbour higher biodiversity. Despite our positive results, adaption of best management practices by the farmers remains one of the biggest challenges. We need more studies on long-term cumulative effect of system approaches on fertility, health and the productive capacity of agricultural lands in conventional and organic farming systems. We need to understand what extent system approaches can enhance the resilience of cotton systems.
