Abstract We retrospectively examined the clinical characteristics, pathological features, and outcomes of BK viremia and nephropathy in a population of non-renal solid organ transplant patients (NRSOT) referred for outpatient nephrology consultation over a period of 5 years. In the entire cohort of liver, heart, and lung transplant recipients referred to this clinic, 14% percent were found to have BK viremia with a median peak serum BK viral load of 35 500 copies/ml (range 250 to 21 100 000 copies/ml). BK viremia resolved in six of the seventeen patients (35%). Four out of five patients biopsied showed BK virus (BKV) nephropathy. Eleven out of seventeen patients with BK viremia developed advanced (stage 4 or 5) chronic kidney disease. Four patients developed rejection of their solid organ transplant within the first year post detection of BK viremia after immunosuppression reduction. We conclude that a multi-center study is required to evaluate whether implementation of a systematic BK screening program would be effective in early detection and management of this problem in the NRSOT population.

Abstract Fenamiphos is a neurotoxic organophosphorus pesticide used widely to control pests of crops. Fenamiphos and its toxic oxidation products have been detected in surface and groundwaters. A novel enzyme capable of hydrolysing P-O-C bond of fenamiphos is purified from Microbacterium esteraromaticum MM1 total cellular protein using a combination of methods. The purified fenamiphos hydrolysing enzyme (FHE) was identified as enolase (phosphopyruvate hydratase), a housekeeping enzyme with molecular mass and pI value of 45 kDa and 4.5, respectively. The optimum pH and temperature for the activity of the FHE are 7 and 25 °C, respectively. We studied the influence of metal ions and inhibitors on the enzyme activity. The enzyme was strongly activated by Mg

Abstract Unresolved complex mixtures (UCMs) of hydrocarbons are the pollutants of serious concern commonly occurring in most of the environments contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons. UCMs constitute a relatively unidentified group of compounds compared to the well-resolved hydrocarbons that could easily be identified by the modern chromatographic methods. UCMs that accumulate in the environment cause several toxicological effects of ecological significance, and indirectly affect the human health. Despite decades-long efforts to provide adequate information in this area of research, the fate and environmental impacts of UCMs of petroleum hydrocarbons are poorly understood. Techniques for extraction and analysis of UCMs in the environment are very important in their identification and quantification. Also, remediation of toxic UCMs of petroleum hydrocarbons is all the more essential. In fact, UCMs are often neglected in the risk assessments due to lack of proper identification methods and toxicity data. This critical review presents an overview of our current knowledge on the environmental occurrence, sources, separation, and identification methods for UCMs. The ecological toxicity of UCMs toward the biota and the strategies for remediation of the environments contaminated with UCMs have also been discussed in detail.

Abstract This article explores the history of lupus erythematosus from the origins of the name to the most modern therapeutic advances. The review includes information about the origin of the name "lupus," the first clear description of the skin lesions, the discovery of the systemic and discoid forms, and further advances which define our current view of this illness. The classical descriptions of Hippocrates, Paracelsus, Manardi, Rudolph Virchow, Cazenave, Robert Willan, and Moritz Kaposi are chronologically described. Later, the contributions of Sir William Osler, Jonathan Hutchinson, Sequira and Balean, Kraus and Bohac, Libman and Sacks, Malcolm Hargraves, and Edmund L. Dubois are highlighted. The major breakthroughs of the modern period, including the diagnostic tests, animal models, and genetics, are briefly described. The article ends with the history of drug-induced lupus, diagnostic criteria, and the history of the therapy of lupus erythematosus. With modern therapeutic advances, the mortality rate from lupus erythematosus has decreased substantially. It is hoped that current research will further improve the prognosis of this disease in the near future.
