    Abstract Background: Executive function is an important cognitive factor in gait and balance control. Weakening of balance system components and executive functions due to aging may affect walking and balance and increase the risk of falling.
    Aims: The present study aimed to investigate the relationship between balance and executive function in older individuals and the contributions of physical activity and depression to this relationship.
    Methods: A total of 84 healthy individuals aged 60 and over were included in the study. In the study, the Timed Up and Go Test (TUG), Mini Balance Evaluation Systems Test (Mini-BESTest), Digit Symbol Substitution Test (DSST), Trail Making Test A and B (TMT A and TMT B), Physical Activity Scale for the Elderly (PASE), and Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) were applied.
    Results: The Mini-BESTest and TUG correlated with DSST, TMT A, and TMT B. GDS was correlated with TUG. PASE was correlated with Mini-BESTest and TUG. Executive functions differed according to education level; DSST, TMT B, and GDS were effective in fall history.
    Discussion: There was a significant relationship between balance and executive function. It was found that balance and walking speed increased as executive function skills increased. Depression and physical activity are associated with balance and gait speed.
    Conclusions: Balance and executive functions are related to each other, and physical activity and depression contribute to this relationship. In order to protect against the negative effects of aging, cognitive and physical training can be performed to prevent balance and executive function declines.

    Abstract Background: Migraine is the most common primary headache in children. Neuromediators and deterioration in circadian rhythm and sleep disorders can play a role in the etiology of migraines.
    Aim: To determine the serum melatonin levels of children with migraine and the relationship between melatonin and childhood migraine.
    Materials and methods: Thirty-five children aged between 10 and 18 years with migraine as the case group and 35 healthy children of similar age and sex as the control group were included in the study. Venous blood samples were taken at 09.00 AM and melatonin analysis was performed using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA).
    Results: The mean serum melatonin levels of the case group and control group were found to be 300.1 ± 67.3 pg/mL and 314.9 ± 64.0 pg/mL, respectively. There was no statistically significant difference between the groups (P = 0.351). Comparison of the melatonin levels in the case group according to the clinical characteristics was not significantly different.
    Conclusion: An association between sleep and migraine is predictable, but its pathophysiology is not yet known. Etiological studies continue and the relationship between melatonin and migraine remains unclear.

    Abstract Objective: This retrospective observational study aimed to investigate the effect of different doses of sugammadex used in reversing neuromuscular blockade in electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) procedures on patient recovery and hemodynamic measurements.
    Methods: Anesthesia induction was performed using propofol (1 mg/kg) and rocuronium (0.4 mg/kg). Patients were classified into group 2 (2 mg/kg) and group 3 (3 mg/kg) according to the dose of sugammadex used to reverse neuromuscular blockade. The patient's spontaneous breathing time, eye-opening time, time to comply with voluntary commands, time to reach Modified Aldrete score (MAS) 9, complications, and hemodynamic data were analyzed.
    Results: In total, 314 ECT sessions were performed on 46 patients. The average age of the patients was 38.3±12.6 years, and 56.6% (n=26) were male. While the average number of ECTs applied to the patients was 6.8±2.8, the average seizure duration was 28.2±12.7 seconds. The most common diagnosis (32.7%) in patients who underwent ECT was bipolar disorder. The average time to recovery of spontaneous breathing, eyeopening time, time to comply with voluntary commands, and time to reach MAS 9 were found to be significantly lower in group 3 (p<0.001, p<0.001, p<0.001, and p=0.002, respectively). Tooth damage was observed in 0.3% (n=1) and tongue abrasion in 0.6% (n=2) of the cases. Hemodynamic measurements were similar between groups (p>0.05).
    Conclusions: Sugammadex used at a dose of 3 mg/kg in ECT procedures significantly reduces recovery times compared with 2 mg/kg. However, both doses can be safely and cost-effectively used to reverse the neuromuscular blockade provided by 0.4 mg/kg rocuronium.

    Abstract Acetaminophen is widely used among humans as an antipyretic and analgesic. In this study, the protective effect of losartan in hepatotoxicity and nephrotoxicity induced by acetaminophen in mice was investigated owing to its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. An injection of a single dose of 500 mg/kg (i.p.) acetaminophen was administered to induce hepatotoxicity and nephrotoxicity in Groups VI-X. Losartan at doses of 1 mg/kg (Group VII), 3 mg/kg (Group VIII), and 10 mg/kg (Groups III, V, IX, and X) was injected intraperitoneally twice, at 1 and 12 h after the acetaminophen injection. Additionally, a 4 mg/kg dose of GW9662 (peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPAR-γ) antagonist) was injected intraperitoneally 30 min before the losartan injections in Groups V and X. At the end of 24 h, the mice were euthanized, and blood, liver, and kidney tissue samples were collected. Levels of AST, ALT, creatinine, and oxidative stress markers including TBARS, SOD, CAT, GPx, TAS, TOS, GSH, and GSSG, along with pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, IL-17, and TNF-α, were measured using ELISA kits. Additionally, a histological evaluation of the tissue samples was performed. Acetaminophen causes increases in the levels of AST, ALT, creatinine, TBARS, TOS, GSSG, IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, IL-17, and TNF-α in serum, liver, and kidney tissue. Meanwhile, it led to a decrease in the levels of SOD, CAT, GPx, TAS, and GSH. Losartan injection reversed oxidative and inflammatory damage induced by acetaminophen. Histopathological changes in liver and kidney tissue were alleviated by losartan. The substance GW9662 increased the protective effect of losartan. In light of all the data obtained from our study, it can be said that losartan has a protective effect on liver and kidney damage induced by acetaminophen due to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. In terms of the study, losartan was found to be an alternative substance that could protect people from the harmful effects of acetaminophen.

    Abstract OBJECTIVE: To determine whether there is a relationship between placental thickness and the umbilical artery and uterine artery Doppler evaluation in the second trimester. STUDY DESIGN: The placental thickness and the umbilical artery and uterine artery Doppler evaluations were recorded by a single operator for patients who were admitted for an obstetric follow-up or fetal anatomy screening at 18-28 gestational weeks. The relation between these variables was investigated by evaluating the patients only once. RESULTS: In our study, the mean placental thickness was 31.7 (SD±8.01) mm. The umbilical artery Doppler parameters did not correlate with the placental thickness. The uterine artery Doppler systolic/diastolic velocity, Pulsatility index and Resistance index values positively correlated with the placental thickness. However, these correlations were not statistically significant. CONCLUSIONS: Although there was no relationship between the placental thickness and obstetric Doppler parameters in this study, we suggest that they are likely important factors and their significance should be evaluated in future studies

    Abstract The present study was designed to assess the effectiveness of the eDNA metabarcoding approach to determine the phytoplankton composition in the marine environment with a special focus on mucilage episodes in the Sea of Marmara. For this purpose, the samples were collected from 5 different sites located in the Sea of Marmara and the northern Aegean Sea during the mucilage episode in June 2021. The phytoplankton diversity was analyzed morphologically and by 18S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing, and the dataset of both methods was compared, accordingly. The results showed significant differences between methods in terms of composition and the abundance of the phytoplankton groups. While Miozoa was the most abundant group by metabarcoding, light microscopy (LM) indicated a dominance of Bacillariophyta. Katablepharidophyta was found at lower abundances by the metabarcoding (representing < 1% of the community); the members of this phylum were not observed by a microscope. At the lower taxonomic levels, Chaetoceros was the only genus detected in all samples by both methods. Additionally, while mucilage-forming Gonyaulax fragilis, Cylindrotheca closterium, and Thalassiosira rotula were detected to species-level by LM, metabarcoding was able to determine these organisms at the genus level. On the other hand, the genus Arcocellulus was found in all metabarcoding datasets and not detected by microscopy. The results indicated that metabarcoding can detect a greater number of genera and reveal taxa that were overlooked by light microscopy but to develop a complete picture of phytoplankton diversity in the sample, microscopical observations still are in need.

    Abstract Context: Co-expressions of receptor tyrosine kinases such as c-MET and HER2 were reported in many studies. The concomitant expression is associated with more aggressive clinical course.
    Aims: In this study, it was intended to investigate the correlation of the positivity of c-MET and HER2 with histopathologic findings and their impacts on prognosis.
    Subjects and methods: After the decision of the ethics committee, a total of 64 cases, whose HER 2 status was studied by dual silver in situ hybridization/immunohistochemistry method, were included in the study. Immunohistochemical staining for c-MET was performed to all cases and the evaluation was performed similarly to the criteria for HER2 evaluation, but cytoplasmic staining was also considered significant.
    Statistical analysis used: The data were analyzed using SPSS 20 for Windows.
    Results: c-MET positivity which is considered by the score of 2+ and 3+ was found only in 34.4% of HER2 positive cases while it was 59.3% in HER2 negative cases (P = 0.045). The sole histopathological feature associated with c-MET positivity was distal gastric localization (P = 0.016).
    Conclusions: Even though higher rates of c-MET positivity in HER2 positive cases were stated in the literature, contrary results were obtained in this study. Comparing the HER2+/c-MET + co-expression group with the other groups, no difference was found about age, sex, macroscopic and microscopic characteristics. The presence of c-MET positivity in cases with HER2 expression suggests that c-MET expression might be associated with the resistance to Trastuzumab.

    Abstract Background: Fibromyalgia is a soft tissue rheumatism characterized by chronic and widespread musculoskeletal pain at specific points in the body.
    Objectives: In this study, we aimed to investigate the relationship between Early Growth Response (EGR1, EGR2, and EGR3) protein levels in patients with Fibromyalgia Syndrome (FMS) and healthy controls.
    Methods: In our studies, 76 FMS patient group and 78 healthy control group who were newly diagnosed with primary FMS according to the 2010 American College of Rheumatology criteria for fibromyalgia in Sivas Cumhuriyet University Hospital, Physical Therapy, and Rehabilitation were used. Venous blood samples were taken from both groups for the measurement of EGR1, EGR2, and EGR3 protein plasma levels, and protein levels were determined using ELISA methods. Statistical parametric test assumptions were compared using the Independent Student's t-test. In addition, specificity, sensitivity, and AUC values were calculated with the ROC curve.
    Results: The relationship between plasma EGR1 protein levels of FMS patients and control groups was statistically significant (p=0.001).
    Conclusion: EGR1 protein levels were found to be lower in the patient group diagnosed with FMS compared to the control group. It has been suggested that EGR1 protein levels can be important in the diagnosis of FMS disease.

    Abstract Chronobiological variations are in the fabric of life. The first ideas regarding the possible effects of circadian rhythm on surgical outcomes were published in the early 2000s. Some studies support and oppose this idea. The lack of experimental evidence in a controlled setting has led to this study. This study aimed to explore the chronobiological implications of surgical outcomes. The rats were divided into four groups. A random pattern dorsal skin flaps were elevated in all groups at six h intervals. Flap necrosis rates and melatonin, oxidant, and antioxidant factors were studied. Flap survival was better in the 06:00 h group. The flap necrosis was higher in the 18:00 h group. Some of the biochemical parameters displayed circadian variations. As an independent variable, the time of surgical intervention changed the flap survival rates. It should be noted that the study was held in a nocturnal animal model thus the pattern of flap survival can be in reversed fashion in a clinical scenario. This study is the first experimental evidence for "Chronosurgery" in a controlled setting. Further studies in all aspects of surgical disciplines are required.
