Abstract Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the completeness and legibility of prescriptions dispensed in community pharmacies located in Sana’a, Yemen. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted at 23 randomly selected community pharmacies throughout the capital city of Sana’a, Yemen, from May 2015 to January 2016. A total of 2,178 prescriptions were analyzed for the essential elements of a complete prescription using a validated checklist. Results: Of the 2,178 prescriptions, 19 (0.87%) were considered to be of good quality. The remaining 2,159 (99.12%) were considered as being of very poor quality. Writing errors relating to patients and prescribed medications were the most common errors. Conclusion: In this study, the quality of prescription writing was found to be very poor. Hence, continuous professional development programs are recommended to improve the quality of prescription writing among physicians. Future studies in other cities and investigation of the impact of continuous educational programs on the quality of prescription writing are strongly recommended.

Abstract Abstract Objectives Streptococcus pyogenes is the most frequent cause of pharyngitis and skin infections in children. It is also the causative agent of dangerous immune-complications such as rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease which are common in Yemen. The aim of this study was to determine the throat carriage rate of Streptococcus pyogenes among asymptomatic school children in Sana’a city. Results A cross-sectional study was conducted from December to March of years 2012–2016. A total of 813 asymptomatic school children whose antistreptolysin O test was negative were included. The mean age of the students was 10.5 ± 2.8 years with a range from 5 to 15 years old. Throat swab and blood sample were taking from each student. One hundred and four (12.8%) healthy students were found to be Streptococcus pyogenes carriers. Pharyngeal Streptococcus pyogenes carriage rate was statistically insignificant among different age groups. However, it was found to be more common among females (66, 15%) than males (38, 10%) with statistically significant difference (χ2 = 4.52, P = 0.04). This study showed a high asymptomatic carriage rate of Streptococcus pyogenes in the throat of healthy school children in Sana’a city, Yemen.

Abstract Yemen has witnessed a significant rise in AIDS-related deaths because of very poor access to antiretroviral treatment and because of the current war situation. This study aimed to assess the attributes of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) reporting form, including usefulness, simplicity, flexibility, and acceptability, which is used for reporting HIV cases in Sana’a, Yemen. A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among 311 physicians from public and private health facilities in Sana’a city. Physicians were interviewed using a structured questionnaire to assess the form’s attributes. The mean score was calculated for each attribute and converted to percentages which were interpreted as very poor, poor, average, good, and excellent. The usefulness overall score was 76%, indicating average usefulness. Of the total participants, 283 (91%) and 304 (97.7%) stated that the form is clear and easy to fill, respectively. More than two-thirds (68.5%) of physicians stated that the form ensures the privacy of the customer’s identity. The simplicity attribute score was 74.5%, indicating average simplicity. The overall flexibility was 69.2%, indicating average flexibility. A total of 175 (56%) physicians indicated that they are completely satisfied with the reporting form. The acceptability score was 75.2%, indicating that the HIV/AIDS reporting form of HIV is average in acceptability. The HIV/AIDS reporting form in Yemen was scored average in usefulness, simplicity, flexibility, and acceptability. Training health workers on using the reporting form would improve the performance of HIV/AIDS reporting. Moreover, the reporting form could be adapted to be integrated with other surveillance such as tuberculosis surveillance.

Abstract Objective: To assess hepatic and renal functions among petrol stations workers in Sana’a city, Yemen. Methods: A case-control study was carried out in Sana’a city, in the period from November 2017 to April 2018. Cases included 109 eligible petrol station workers exposed to petrol for at least six hours daily over a period of six months or more, while 109 apparently healthy office workers were recruited from the University of Science and Technology as controls. Data were collected using a pre-designed questionnaire through face-to-face interview. Then, blood samples were collected from cases and controls and tested for albumin, alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), urea and creatinine in the Laboratory Department of the University of Science and Technology Hospital. Data were analyzed using SPSS, version 23.0. Results: The mean concentration of serum albumin among petrol station workers was significantly lower than the controls. In contrast, the mean level of serum ALP was significantly higher among the petrol station workers than the controls. On the other hand, there were no statistically significant differences in the mean levels of serum ALT and AST between the two groups. Although the mean concentrations of creatinine and urea were higher among the controls than the petrol station workers, the difference was only significantly higher for creatinine among office workers. Conclusions: Although no specific biochemical abnormalities exist in the hepatic and renal functions of petrol station workers in Sana’a city, these parameters may show evident effects with prolonged exposure to petrol components. Further longitudinal studies with larger sample sizes, longer durations of exposure and regular follow-up are recommended to assess the impact of long-term exposure to petrol on hepatic and renal functions.

Abstract Introduction: Acute leukaemia is one of the most common types of cancers among children. There is only restricted number of studies about childhood leukaemia in Yemen, hence the importance of performing this study. Aim: To assess the epidemiological, clinical and para-clinical characteristics of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukaemia in Sana’a, Yemen. Materials and Methods: This was a descriptive retrospective study. It included 177 children younger than 15 years with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia (ALL), who were diagnosed in the period from May to September 2011 to 2017 in the Childhood Leukemia Management Center (CLMC) in Sana’a, Yemen. The diagnosis was based on clinical characteristics, bone marrow morphology and immunophenotyping. The data was analysed using SPSS program. Chi-square test with Yate correction and Fisher tests were used to identify the significance of associations. Results: Majority of patients 129 (72.8%) were between 1-9 years and male to female ratio was 1.53 to 1. The most common presenting features were fever (89.3%), pallor (89.3%) and bone pain (71.3%). Immunophenotyping was done for 126 patients; 99 (78.6%) had precursor B-cell and 27 (21.4%) had T-cell ALL. Ninety two (52.6%) of patients were classified as standard risk and 83 (47.4%) were high risk; most of them were T-cell ALL. Response to chemotherapy in induction phase was excellent with complete remission rate of 94.2%. Relapse was 16.5%; 62.9% of them were medullary relapses. Mortality during induction was 15.6%. Infection was the most common cause of death (37.8%), followed by haemorrhage (11.1%). Conclusion: ALL is considered a significant health problem in Yemen. It needs high awareness and more attention from the governorate regarding improving the capacities of health facilities on health information, diagnosis and treatment.

Abstract The aim of this study was to evaluate blood transfusion services (BTS) at the main blood banks (BBs) of the Sana’a Capital. The 4 main BBs at Sana’a Capital were evaluated according to the safe World Health Organization BTS standards. Qualitative and quantitative data were collected using semi-structured questionnaires covering 6 components: activities, quality assurance system (QAS) and training, donation, grouping and compatibility testing, components, and screening for transfusion-transmitted infections (TTIs). An overall mean percent score for BTS was calculated where <60% is considered unsatisfactory, 60% to 79.9% satisfactory, and ≥80% highly satisfactory. The 4 BBs screen for HIV, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C and perform all functions except therapeutic transfusion. While 75% of the staff in BBs had received training in biosafety and half of the staff had received training in Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), no QAS in place at any of the 4 BBs. The 4 BBs depended on 71% of their transfusions on family donors. Two BBs do not perform reverse grouping and do not keep patient/donor samples for the required minimum 5 days. Only one BB achieved an overall high satisfactory score and one achieved a satisfactory score. Findings highlight the increasing challenges facing BTS in Sana’a Capital especially the lack of therapeutic transfusion, poor QAS, and predominant dependence on the family donors. Therefore, there is a need to develop and train staff on QAS and to increase awareness among public on importance of voluntary donation. A wider scale evaluation of BTS in Sana’a is recommended.

Abstract: ... rural districts of Sana’a governorate, Yemen, and to investigate the correlation between caries experience and ...

Abstract Objectives: Dental caries is the most prevalent chronic condition affecting schoolchildren worldwide. This study is aimed to assess the prevalence of dental caries among schoolchildren in urban and rural districts of Sana’a governorate, Yemen, and to investigate the correlation between caries experience and level of fluoride in drinking water, age, gender, and residence.
Materials and Methods: This school-based survey involved 17,599 schoolchildren (aged 6-12 years), of whom 9623 were boys and 7976 were girls. We used decay-missing-filled teeth/decay-filled teeth (DMFT/dft) indices to evaluate dental caries experience. In addition, fluoride concentration in drinking water was investigated.
Results: Around 67.6% of children had dental caries. Children residing in urban districts had significantly higher mean scores of DMFT/dft than those in rural areas ( P < 0.05). A significant negative correlation between caries experience and fluoride level was found ( P < 0.05), with the lowest dft/DMFT scores at the optimum fluoride level of 0.61-2 ppm and the highest at two extremes, 0.0–0.4 ppm and >2 ppm.
Conclusion: This survey found a very high prevalence of caries among schoolchildren in Yemen. There was also an inverse relation between dental caries experience and fluoride levels.
