Abstract Ethnopharmacological relevance: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most prevalent neurodegenerative disease among old adults. As a traditional Chinese medicine, the herbal decoction Tian-Si-Yin consists of Morinda officinalis How. and Cuscuta chinensis Lam., which has been widely used to nourish kidney. Interestingly, Tian-Si-Yin has also been used to treat dementia, depression and other neurological conditions. However, its therapeutic potential for neurodegenerative diseases such as AD and the underlying mechanisms remain unclear.
Aim of the study: To evaluate the therapeutic effect of the herbal formula Tian-Si-Yin against AD and to explore the underlying mechanisms.
Materials and methods: The N2a cells treated with amyloid β (Aβ) peptide or overexpressing amyloid precursor protein (APP) were used to establish cellular models of AD. The in vivo anti-AD effects were evaluated by using Caenorhabditis elegans and 3 × Tg-AD mouse models. Tian-Si-Yin was orally administered to the mice for 8 weeks at a dose of 10, 15 or 20 mg/kg/day, respectively. Its protective role on memory deficits of mice was examined using the Morris water maze and fear conditioning tests. Network pharmacology, proteomic analysis and ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry/mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS) were used to explore the underlying molecular mechanisms, which were further investigated by Western blotting and immunohistochemistry.
Results: Tian-Si-Yin was shown to improve cell viability of Aβ-treated N2a cells and APP-expressing N2a-APP cells. Tian-Si-Yin was also found to reduce ROS level and extend lifespan of transgenic AD-like C. elegans model. Oral administration of Tian-Si-Yin at medium dose was able to effectively rescue memory impairment in 3 × Tg mice. Tian-Si-Yin was further shown to suppress neuroinflammation by inhibition of glia cell activation and downregulation of inflammatory cytokines, diminishing tau phosphoralytion and Aβ deposition in the mice. Using UHPLC-MS/MS and network pharmacology technologies, 17 phytochemicals from 68 components of Tian-Si-Yin were identified as potential anti-AD components. MAPK1, BRAF, TTR and Fyn were identified as anti-AD targets of Tian-Si-Yin from network pharmacology and mass spectrum.
Conclusions: This study has established the protective effect of Tian-Si-Yin against AD and demonstrates that Tian-Si-Yin is capable of improving Aβ level, tau pathology and synaptic disorder by regulating inflammatory response.

Abstract Tian‐Dong‐Tang‐Gan powder (TDTGP) is a newly developed immune enhancer in Litopenaeus vannamei. In vitro, TDTGP was non‐toxic to haemolymph at 400 µg ml⁻¹ and increased the activities of phenol oxidase (PO), acid phosphatase (ACP) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) after incubation with haemolymph for 8–48 h. In vivo, the activities of PO, SOD, ACP and alkaline phosphatase (AKP) in the shrimp haemolymph could be increased during the 28‐day feeding trials. An acute ammonia stress test was performed after the feeding trials were terminated. We studied the immunological parameters and histology diagnosis. In the drug group, the immune index burst following acute ammonia exposure was higher than that in the negative control and control groups. Histological detection showed that the integrity of the hepatopancreas cells in the TDTGP groups was higher than that in the negative control group at 72 h after ammonia exposure. The results showed that feeding shrimp TDTGP for 28 days could improve the immunity and resistance to ammonia stress by Litopenaeus vannamei and protect the integrity of the hepatopancreas during ammonia stress. These findings showed that TDTGP can be developed and used as an immunoenhancer in Litopenaeus vannamei.

Abstract The chemistry underlying bone mineral formation in vertebrates is the reaction of calcium phosphate precipitation. In a near-neutral solution, an amorphous phase and hydroxyapatite nanoparticles appear successively, and the reaction system containing either of the two kinds of precipitates is in a non-equilibrium state. Here, we propose a pseudo-equilibrium approach to the solution chemistry of the precipitation reactions. We employed two series of reaction systems, collected samples at various stages, and analyzed the solution chemistry data on the basis of a simplified model of reaction. We derived two types of pseudo-equilibrium equations from the two series, respectively. These equations reveal the existence of multiple structural units in a precipitate particle and correlate the ionic product with the surface proportion per structural unit (

Abstract Objectives: The epidemiological trends of cardiovascular disease (CVD) burden attributed to low physical activity (LPA) across various regions and countries are poorly understood. Hence, we assessed the global, regional, and national spatiotemporal trends of LPA-related CVD from 1990 to 2019.
Study design: We conducted a secondary analysis of the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019. The data on LPA-related CVD were examined with regard to sex, age, year, and Socio-Demographic Index (SDI).
Methods: We assessed the temporal changes in age-standardized mortality rate (ASMR) and age-standardized death rate (ASDR) using the estimated annual percentage change (EAPC) over a 30-year period.
Results: There were a staggering 0.64 million deaths and 9.99 million disability-adjusted life-years globally attributed to LPA-related CVD in 2019. The majority of the LPA-related CVD burden was observed in the population aged ≥80 years. It also indicated a high disease burden of LPA-related CVD in Central Asia, Arabian Peninsula, and North Africa. Although there has been a decline in ASMR and ASDR associated with LPA-related CVD on a global scale, the countries experiencing the most substantial increase in LPA-related CVD burden are Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and Azerbaijan. The ASMR and ASDR remained stable in regions with low, low-middle, and middle SDI levels. The EAPCs of ASMR and ASDR were negatively linked with SDI in 2019.
Conclusions: From 1990 to 2019, LPA led to a significant and escalating burden of CVD in certain regions, namely, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and Azerbaijan. It is imperative for governments and policymakers to implement regulatory measures and strategic interventions aimed at mitigating this burden.

Abstract Light can trigger electrical activity in certain types of cells, and is considered to be a better means of biological regulation than electrical stimulation in the future. Due to the specificity and selectivity of natural cells' photoresponse to optical signals, constructing an applicable method to explore which kinds of cells have photosensitivity and which bands of light could induce its photoresponse most effectively, is of great significance for lights' medical applications. This paper firstly proposed a universal and operable system and corresponding method to quantitatively measure and analyze photosensitivity of cells in vitro to weak pulse laser, which is constructed with Ca

Abstract The basic leucine zipper (bZIP) transcription factors constitute the most widely distributed and conserved eukaryotic family. They play crucial roles in plant growth, development, and responses to both biotic and abiotic stresses, exerting strong regulatory control over the expression of downstream genes. In this study, a genome-wide characterization of the CebZIP transcription factor family was conducted using bioinformatic analysis. Various aspects, including physicochemical properties, phylogenetics, conserved structural domains, gene structures, chromosomal distribution, gene covariance relationships, promoter

Abstract Stent implantation is a principal therapeutic approach for coronary artery diseases. Nonetheless, the presence of stents significantly interferes with in-stent luminal (ISL) visualization and complicates the diagnosis of in-stent restenosis (ISR), thereby increasing the risk of misdiagnoses and underdiagnoses in coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA). Dual-energy (DE) CT could calculate the volume fraction for voxels from low- and high-energy images (LHEI) and provide information on specific three basic materials. In this study, the innovative coronary stent decomposition algorithm (CSDA) was developed from the DECT three materials decomposition (TMD), through spectral simulation to determine the scan and attenuation coefficient for the stent, and preliminary execution for an in vitro sophisticated polyether ether ketone (PEEK) 3D-printed right coronary artery (RCA) replica. Furthermore, the whole-coronary-artery replica with multi-stent implantation, the RCA replica with mimetic plaque embedded, and two patients with stent further validated the effectiveness of CSDA. Post-CSDA images manifested no weakened attenuation values, no elevated noise values, and maintained anatomical integrity in the coronary lumen. The stents were effectively removed, allowing for the ISL and ISR to be clearly visualized with a discrepancy in diameters within 10%. We believe that CSDA presents a promising solution for enhancing CCTA diagnostic accuracy post-stent implantation.
