Abstract Accurate dosimetric verification is becoming increasingly important in radiotherapy. Although polymer gel dosimetry may be useful for verifying complex 3D dose distributions, it has limitations for clinical application due to its strong reactivity with oxygen and other contaminants. Therefore, it is important that the material of the gel storage container blocks reaction with external contaminants. In this study, we tested the effect of air and the chemical permeability of various polymer-based 3D printing materials that can be used as gel containers. A methacrylic acid, gelatin, and tetrakis (hydroxymethyl) phosphonium chloride gel was used. Five types of printing materials that can be applied to the fused deposition modeling (FDM)-type 3D printer were compared: acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), co-polyester (CPE), polycarbonate (PC), polylactic acid (PLA), and polypropylene (PP) (reference: glass vial). The map of R2 (1/T2) relaxation rates for each material, obtained from magnetic resonance imaging scans, was analyzed. Additionally, response histograms and dose calibration curves from the R2 map were evaluated. The R2 distribution showed that CPE had sharper boundaries than the other materials, and the profile gradient of CPE was also closest to the reference vial. Histograms and dose calibration showed that CPE provided the most homogeneous and the highest relative response of 83.5%, with 8.6% root mean square error, compared with the reference vial. These results indicate that CPE is a reasonable material for the FDM-type 3D printing gel container.

Abstract To investigate the optimal scanning parameters of dual-energy computed tomography (DECT), which can accurately determine sensitivity (the detectability of urinary stones) and accuracy (the composition matching of urinary stones), and to apply them to clinical trials. Fifteen urinary stones were chemically analyzed, and their chemical compositions were considered a reference standard with which we compared the uric acid (UA) and non-UA compositions determined using DECT. The urinary stones were placed inside a bolus and scanned with a dual-source CT scanner under various selected dual-energy conditions (A to X) using various solid water phantom thicknesses. These datasets were analyzed using the Siemens syngo.via software tool (integrated into the CT system) for matching the sensitivity and accuracy assessments. This study showed that 80% of the highest sensitivity (detection of urinary stones) and 92% of the highest accuracy (composition matching of urinary stones) were achieved under condition A (a collimation beam width setting of 2 × 32 × 0.6 mm, an automatic exposure control setting of 80/sn140 peak kilovoltage, and a slice thickness of 0.5/0.5 mm) (P < 0.05). Application of the DECT energy parameters presented in the study will help identify the sensitivity and accuracy of UA and non-UA stone analysis, even in patients with small-sized urinary stones and in conditions difficult for analysis.

Abstract Abstract The aim of the study was to evaluate dose distributions on the superficial cardiac lesion surrounded by low-density lungs. Volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) technique was applied to optimize the dose distribution using the anisotropic analytic algorithm (AAA) and Acuros XB algorithm (AXB) using the 3-D printed cardiac phantom. We used four full and half arcs with 6-MV and 15-MV photons to investigate the rebuild-up effect near the planning target volume (PTV). Depending on the calculation algorithm (AAA vs. AXB) for full arcs plans, V95 of PTV differed by 27% for 6-MV and 29% for 15-MV, and D95 for 6-MV and 15-MV shows 24% and 30%, respectively. The maximum doses in the AXB plans on PTV were 5.1% higher than those in AAA plans at 6-MV, and 3.8% higher at 15-MV. In addition, half arcs treatment plans showed a very similar tendency with full arcs plans. Film dosimetry showed significant differences from the planned results in the AAA plans. Particularly, the dose mismatch occurred between the cardiac PTV and the left lung interface. In the case of 6-MV plans calculated by AAA, the maximum dose increased from 4.1 to 7.7% in the PTV. Furthermore, it showed that 50% of the width of dose profiles was reduced by 1.3 cm in the 6-MV plan. Conversely, in the case of the plans using the AXB algorithm, the maximum dose increased by 2.0–5.0%. In contrast to the AAA algorithm, the dose patterns at the interface demonstrated a good agreement with the plans. Dose fluctuation on the interface between superficial cardiac lesions and low-density lungs can lead to an error in the estimation of accurate dose delivery for the case of VT SBRT.

Abstract Aims: Frailty is an obstacle to performing cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET) in patients with chronic heart failure (CHF). We evaluated the usefulness of oxygen uptake efficiency slope (OUES) using a 6 min walk test (6MWT) with portable gas analysis compared with CPET-derived parameters in patients with CHF.
Methods and results: Patients with CHF who underwent both the 6MWT with portable gas analysis and CPET between December 2016 and May 2020 were retrospectively investigated. The 6MWT-derived and echocardiographic parameters were compared with the OUES and peak oxygen consumption (VO
Conclusions: In frail patients with CHF who have difficulty performing maximal exercises, the OUES through the 6MWT may be applied instead of the OUES and peak VO

Abstract Purpose: We compared and analyzed the detectability performance pertaining to an abdominal phantom including a region of interest (ROI) according to a computed tomography (CT) reconstruction algorithm.
Methods: Three types of reconstruction algorithms (FBP, SAFIRE, and ADMIRE) were used to evaluate the detectability performance using the abdominal phantom (phantom size: 25 × 18 × 28 cm
Results: The characteristic of the ADMIRE-3 reconstructed image was higher than those of the FBP and SAFIRE-3 reconstructed images. The CNR values of the SAFIRE and ADMIRE images were much higher than the corresponding values of the FBP images. The difference in COV values for the ADMIRE images was ~1.2 times lower than the corresponding values of the SAFIRE images.
Conclusion: The comparative analysis of the abdominal phantom low-contrast resolution differences for each CT exposure parameters showed that ADMIRE demonstrated better results than SAFIRE and FBP in terms of contrast, CNR, COV difference, and 1D NPS. This indicates that ADMIRE can provide a clearer observation even with the same number of contrast objects as compared to SAFIRE and FBP owing to its better contrast resolution in the central part of the contrast hole at low kV.

Abstract Curvature is a general factor for various two-dimensional (2D) materials due to their flexibility, which is not yet fully unveiled to control their physical properties. In particular, the effect of structural disorder with random curvature formation on excitons in 2D semiconductors is not fully understood. Here, the correlation between structural disorder and exciton formation in monolayer MoS

Abstract This study compared the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) space between patients with normal and prognathic mandibles. The study included a total of 68 Korean individuals, and the TMJ space was measured using computed tomography. Patients with normal SNB values (normal mandible) were classified into Group 1. Patients with high SNB values (prognathic mandibles) were categorized into Group 2. The TMJ space was defined as the distance between the condylar process and the mandibular fossa, and it was significantly different between Groups 1 and 2 (1.94±0.07 mm versus 1.50±0.05 mm, P<0.01). This study confirmed that the TMJ space in patients with prognathic mandibles is narrower than that in patients with normal mandibles.
