Abstract Understanding how bushfire affects basin-wide ecohydrological processes is critical for ecological restoration and water supply. However, the mechanisms responsible for post-fire streamflow remain poorly explored in forested basins of China due to complex scale-dependent relationships between fire-induced forest changes and ecohydrological processes, lack of reasonable design of paired watershed experiments, and especially data scarcity. Here, we re-examine ecohydrological responses of the Black Dragon fire (one of the largest and most damaging forest fires on record globally) on an annual scale in three forest basins (two fire-impacted basins, namely Emuer and Pangu, and a nearly unimpacted basin, Huma) in the Daxing’an Mountains using multiple most recent datasets and methods. We found that the Black Dragon fire decreased annual- and basin-averaged vegetation leaf area, evapotranspiration, interception loss, transpiration, soil moisture, runoff, and discharge capacity in 1987 in the two fire-impacted basins compared with the unimpacted basin. The annual- and basin-averaged evapotranspiration (runoff) did not reduce (increase) as much as that expected with decreased LAI given the precipitation amount in 1987 in the two fire-impacted basins, which properly linked to the quick postfire regrowth of vegetation in the growing season. Vegetation leaf area and productivity can quickly recover in the following two to three years postfire, but the hydrological systems need more than 10 years to adapt this disturbance. These findings improve the understanding of ecohydrological responses to bushfire disturbance and provide scientific evidence for ecological protection and water resources management under intensified natural and anthropogenic disturbances.

Abstract: ... region of the Daxing’an Mountains, northeast China, the Betula platyphylla forest at the early succession ... the sequestration capacity of SOC and SN of forest soil in the future Daxing’an Mountains, northeast China ...

Abstract Secondary forest succession plays a vital role in the dynamics of soil organic carbon and nitrogen and is recognized as an important driving force for the recovery of soil properties. In order to explore the effect of forest succession on the stocks of soil organic carbon and nitrogen in permafrost region of the Daxing’an Mountains, northeast China, the Betula platyphylla forest at the early succession stage; the Betula platyphylla-Larix gmelinii mixed forest at the middle succession stage and the pure Larix gmelinii forest at the climax forest stage were selected to compare soil organic carbon and soil nitrogen stocks along forest succession stage. The results showed that the concentration of soil organic carbon (SOC) and total soil nitrogen (SN) all increased during forest succession, particularly in 0–40 cm depth. However, the C:N ratio changed slightly. The concentration of SOC and SN and the ratio of C/N significantly decreased with increasing of soil depth along forest succession. The stocks of total soil organic carbon (TSOC) and total soil nitrogen (TSN) increased from 77.69 Mg ha−1 to 130.50 Mg ha−1 and from 7.46 Mg ha−1 to 13.90 Mg ha−1, respectively, during forest succession, but the accumulation were mainly in later stage of succession from Betula platyphylla-Larix gmelinii forest to Larix gmelinii forest. TSOC and TSN showed obvious surface aggregation, with more than 58% of TSOC in the soil of 0–20 cm depth and more than 50% of TSN in the soil of 0–40 cm depth. TSOC and TSN decreased with increasing soil depth. To sum up, our study highlighted that secondary forest succession greatly increased the sequestration capacity of SOC and SN of forest soil in the future Daxing’an Mountains, northeast China. The result is of great significance for understanding the simultaneous effects of forest succession and climate change, and improving forest resource management measures and strategies in permafrost region.

Abstract Depression stands as a prominent contributor to global disability, entailing an elevated risk of suicide. Substantial evidence supports the notion that immune dysregulation may play a role in the development of depression and impede responses to antidepressant treatments. Immune dysregulation may cause depression in susceptible individuals through raising inflammatory responses. Differences in immune cell types and the release of pro-inflammatory mediators are observed in the blood and cerebrospinal fluid of patients with major depressive disorder, which is associated with neuroimmune dysfunction. Therefore, the interaction of peripheral and central immune targets in depression needs to be understood. Urgent attention is required for the development of innovative therapeutics directed at modulating immune responses for the treatment of depression. This review delineates the immune mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of depression, assesses the therapeutic potential of immune system targeting for depression treatment, and deliberates on the merits and constraints of employing immunotherapy in the management of depression.

Abstract Esophageal carcinoma (EC) is a highly malignant type of tumor. In a previous study, the authors found that long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) LOC441178 inhibited the tumorigenesis of EC. Moreover, exosomes derived from tumor cells containing lncRNAs were found to play a key role in the tumor environment; however, whether exosomes can affect the tumor microenvironment by carrying LOC441178 remains unclear. Thus, the present study aimed to clarify this. In order to assess the effects of exosomal LOC441178 in EC, cell invasion and migration were examined using the Transwell assay. Exosomes were identified using transmission electron microscopy, western blot analysis and nanoparticle tracking analysis. Furthermore, macrophage surface makers (CD206 and CD86) were analyzed using flow cytometry. Moreover, a subcutaneous xenograft mouse model was constructed to assess the role of TE-9 cells-derived exosomal LOC441178 in EC. The results revealed that LOC441178 overexpression notably suppressed the metastasis of EC cells. In addition, exosomes were successfully isolated from EC cells, and LOC441178 level was upregulated in exosomes derived from LOC441178-overexpressed EC cells. Exosomal LOC441178 also suppressed macrophage M2 polarization, and the polarized macrophages decreased EC cell invasion. Exosomes containing LOC441178 notably inhibited the growth of EC in mice. On the whole, the present study demonstrated that the delivery of LOC441178 by EC cell-secreted exosomes inhibited the tumorigenesis of EC by suppressing the polarization of M2 macrophages. These findings may provide a new theoretical basis for discovering new strategies against EC.

Abstract This study identified and detected the existence of major pollutants in northeast China. As an alpine region and an agricultural base, this region has representative significance in pollution research. We selected 56 samples from drinking water sources of typical villages and towns, focusing on the analysis of heavy metals and organic micropollutants in northeast China. The analysis results showed that Fe and Mn were the main metal elements exceeding the standard. The exceeding rates were 17.9% and 19.6%. Experiments showed that there were 19 kinds of pesticides, 6 kinds of OPEs, 2 kinds of PAEs, 22 kinds of PPCPs. The detection rate of these 49 kinds of organic micro-pollutants were 1.79~82.14%. The characteristics of organic pollution were extensive and varied. Many underground water samples had high level of micropollutants. The water quality parameters of drinking water sources in villages and towns showed close relation to local geological conditions and agricultural activities. Actions must be taken to control these parameters from the source of pollution.

Abstract Background: Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) have been shown to play an important role in the development and progression of esophageal carcinoma (EC). Recently, lncRNA LOC441178 was shown to be dysregulated in many cancer types; however, the role of LOC441178 in EC remains unclear.
Materials and methods: Flow cytometry, transwell and wound healing assays were used to measure the apoptosis and migration in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) cells. RT-qPCR was used to detect the level of miR-182 in LOC441178-overexpressed EC cells. In addition, DNA methylation status of miR-182 promoter in LOC441178-overexpressed ESCC cells was detected by methylation-specific PCR (MSP) and bisulfite sequencing PCR.
Results: In this study, we found that LOC441178 negatively regulated miR-182 expression in ESCC cells. In addition, overexpression of LOC441178 inhibited the proliferation and migration and induced apoptosis in ESCC cells via downregulation of miR-182. Moreover, overexpression of LOC441178 markedly inhibited the phosphorylation of Akt and phosphorylation FOXO3a and increased the expression of FOXO3a in ESCC cells via downregulation of miR-182. Mechanistically, LOC441178 overexpression epigenetically suppressed miR-182 expression via DNA methylation. In vivo experiments revealed that overexpression of LOC441178 inhibited ESCC tumor growth in mouse xenograft model.
Conclusion: Collectively, our data suggested that LOC441178 overexpression epigenetically inhibited tumorigenesis of ESCC via DNA methylation of miR-182. These data indicated that the LOC441178/miR-182 axis might represent a novel therapeutic option for the treatment of ESCC.

Abstract An automated measurement system was developed to characterize the spatial gradient, linearity of the spatial gradient, bandwidth and transverse uniformity of a linear variable filter (LVF). To demonstrate this, the LVF fabricated in our group has been measured and analyzed. Simulations for beam spot size effects on measurements were performed for various LVF spectral peak profiles with results indicting significant averaging effect due to beam spot size and this is consistent with experiment results. Moreover, to fit the peak profile more accurately, a modified Pearson VII function was proposed and demonstrated high capability to express complex shapes of peaks mathematically. This provides a methodology for deconvoluting the original LVF peak profile from a measured averaged peak profile and has been verified using actual measured data.
