Abstract Background: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality due to its repetitive remission and relapse. The Jian-Wei-Yu-Yang (JW) formula has a historical application in the clinic to combat gastrointestinal disorders. The investigation aimed to explore the molecular and cellular mechanisms of JW.
Methods: 2% dextran sodium sulfate (DSS) was diluted in drinking water and given to mice for 5 days to establish murine models of experimental colitis, and different doses of JW solution were administered for 14 days. Network pharmacology analysis and weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) were utilized to predict the therapeutic role of JW against experimental colitis and colitis-associated colorectal cancer (CAC). 16S rRNA sequencing and untargeted metabolomics were conducted using murine feces. Western blotting, immunocytochemistry, and wound healing experiments were performed to confirm the molecular mechanisms.
Results: (1) Liquid chromatography with mass spectrometry was utilized to confirm the validity of the JW formula. The high dose of JW treatment markedly attenuated DSS-induced experimental colitis progression, and the targets were enriched in inflammation, infection, and tumorigenesis. (2) The JW targets were related to the survival probability in patients with colorectal cancer, underlying a potential therapeutic value in CRC intervention. (3) Moreover, the JW therapy successfully rescued the decreased richness and diversity of microbiota, suppressed the potentially pathogenic phenotype of the gut microorganisms, and increased cytochrome P450 activity in murine colitis models. (4) Our
Conclusion: The JW capsule attenuated the progression of murine colitis by a prompt resolution of inflammation and bloody stool and by re-establishing a microbiome profile that favors re-epithelization and prevents carcinogenesis.

Abstract YU-Pingfeng San (YPFS) can regulate inflammatory response to alleviate the symptoms of nasal congestion and runny rose in allergic rhinitis (AR). However, the mechanism of action remains unclear. In this study, 30 active ingredients of three effective herbs included in YPFS and 140 AR/YPFS-related genes were identified by database analysis. Gene ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) enrichment analysis showed that the targets were mainly enriched in immune inflammatory-related biological processes and pathways. Finally, three hub gene targeting epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), mitogen-activated protein kinase 1 (MAPK1), and protein kinase B1 (AKT1) related to YPFS and AR were identified by network pharmacology analysis. YPFS treatment decreased the expression of EGFR, MAPK1, and AKT1 in ovalbumin (OVA)-induced AR mice and impaired the production of inflammatory factors interleukin (IL)-4, IL-5, and IL-13, thus alleviating immunoglobulin E (IgE) production and the symptoms of scratching nose in AR. Through molecular docking analysis, we found that the active ingredients decursin, anomalin, and wogonin of YPFS could bind to EGFR, MAPK1, and AKT1 proteins. Moreover, decursin treatment impaired the expression of IL-4 and IL-5 in human PBMCs. These results suggested that YPFS could alleviate the AR inflammatory responses by targeting EGFR, MAPK1, and AKT1, showing the mechanism of action of YPFS in AR treatment.

Abstract Background: The potential treatment effects and safety of Yu ping feng san (YPFS) for pediatric allergic rhinitis (PAR) patients have yet to be studied systematically.
Objectives: To assess the effects and safety of YPFS for treat pediatric patients, allergic rhinitis.
Methods: We systematically searched PubMed, EMBASE (Excerpta Medical Database), Cochrane library, Chinese Cochrane Centre's Controlled Trials Register platform, Wanfang Chinese Digital Periodical and Conference Database, China National Knowledge Infrastructure Database, and VIP Chinese Science, from inception dates to November 1, 2019. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were included. The risk of bias in the trials was assessed in accordance with the Cochrane Handbook, version 5.1.0. RevMan 5.3 software was used to perform a meta-analysis. Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation methodology was applied to evaluate the evidence quality for each outcome. The quality of evidence for each outcome measurement was low for 4 outcomes and very low for 5 outcomes.
Results: A total of 10 RCTs involving 1069 participants (3-15 years old) fulfilled the inclusion criteria. After exclusion, 8 RCTs were pooled for efficacy assessment. The overall efficacy evaluation result did not show benefit for the experimental group (relative risk 0.32, CI 95% 0.24-0.45; P = .98;) Investigation of variation of serum IgA, immunoglobulin E, IgG in three studies in 2 groups returned no statistical significance. YPFS gave relatively better safety (relative risk 0.29, CI 95% 0.14-0.58; P = .0005; Fig. S8, http://links.lww.com/MD/F751) and lower recurrence rates than did Western medical therapy.
Conclusions: Current evidence cannot support the routine use of YPFS for treatment of PAR. This may be due to poor-quality study-design limitations of the included YPFS studies. Our data showed that the use of YPFS for PAR is relatively safe compared to Western medical therapy, but a conclusion could not be drawn because only 5 studies were analyzed. Every study suffered from some methodological limitation. Therefore, further large, rigorously-designed studies are necessary to determine conclusively the utility of YPFS in PAR.

Abstract Yu jiangsuan (YJS) is a unique traditional fermented condiment in China. Physicochemical, bacterial communities, and non-volatile properties were examined in inoculation Autochthonous Weissella cibaria and Lactobacillus plantarum. The results indicated that inoculation samples did well in shortening fermentation time; amino acid nitrogen (AN) and TCA-soluble peptide contents of fermented YJS were 10.8% and 17.4% higher than those of naturally fermented YJS, respectively. However, its total volatile base nitrogen (TVB-N), thiobarbituric acid (TBARS), and nitrite were only 74.3%, 87.2% and 83.6% of those of naturally fermented YJS. In addition, the dominant bacterial genera were Lactobacillus, Weissella and Pectobacterium, whose contributions were 41.2%, 20.3% and 5.5%, respectively. Moreover, 26 significantly differential metabolites were identified, and involved in 10 metabolic pathways. The decomposition of substrates and the formation of differential metabolites in YJS were primarily centered on the TCA cycle and the metabolism of carbohydrates. Therefore, this study is conducive to discovering the bacterial community structure and metabolite composition of probiotic inoculated YJS fermentation, as well as the potential value of core functional bacteria genera in controlling YJS production in industry.

Abstract Total of 172 total suspended particulate (TSP) samples and its chemical compositions were collected and analyzed from January to December 2010 in Pengjia Yu Island, an open region in East China Sea (ECS). Despite the predominance of sea-salt major ions (Na⁺, Cl⁻), the presence of non-sea-salt SO₄²⁻ (nss-SO₄²⁻) and NO₃⁻ as well as combustion-derived trace metals clearly establishes the impact of anthropogenic sources over ECS. The annual contributions of coal, heavy-fuel oil and traffic to the measured chemical species were 21.0 %, 15.0 % and 15.5 %, respectively. Especially in spring, the contributions of crustal minerals to measured chemical species during dust period (33.6 %) were higher than that (13.2 %) during non-dust period. The calculated annual average dry deposition fluxes for trace metals and total inorganic nitrogen were 246.1 ± 345.8 μg/m²/d and 2950.4 ± 2245.0 μg/m²/d, suggesting that atmospheric deposition is an important source of nutrient elements for the south of ECS.

Abstract The incidence of asthma has increased in recent decades. Although corticosteroids and bronchodilators are used in clinical practice, the control of asthma remains a challenge. Allergic asthma is characterized airway inflammation mediated by type 2 immune response. Group 2 innate lymphoid cells (ILC2s) are an important source of type 2 cytokines IL-5 and IL-13, which contribute to the progress of asthma. Jia-Wei-Yu-Ping-Feng-San (JWYPFS), a traditional Chinese medicine, has been widely used to treat asthma in China. In this study we investigated the mechanisms of JWYPFS in the treatment of asthma, especially the effect on ILC2s important in airway inflammation. Female C57BL/6 mice were sensitized and challenged with OVA to establish a model of allergic asthma. Airway hyperresponsiveness was examined by direct airway resistance analysis. Inflammatory cell counts were determined in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF). Inflammatory cell infiltration and mucus hypersecretion in lung tissue sections was observed by HE and PAS staining, respectively. The numbers and proportions of ILC2s as well as the ILC2s-related transcription factors GATA3, IRF4, and type 2 cytokines were measured in lung tissue samples. Additionally, ILC2s were collected from mouse lung; ILC2s-related cytokines and GATA3 and IRF4 were evaluated after IL-33-induced activation of ILC2s

Abstract Ethnopharmacological relevance: Atherosclerosis (AS) is a chronic disease that is associated with high morbidity. However, therapeutic approaches are limited. Wu-Zhu-Yu decoction (WZYD) is a well-known traditional Chinese medicine prescription that is traditionally used to treat headaches and vomiting. Modern studies have demonstrated the cardiotonic effects of WZYD. However, whether WZYD can alleviate AS and its underlying mechanisms remain unclear.
Aim of the study: This study aims to investigate the antiatherosclerotic efficacy of WZYD and illustrate its potential mechanisms using an integrated approach combining in vivo and in vitro assessments, including metabolomics, network pharmacology, cell experiments, and molecular docking analyses.
Materials and methods: In this work, an atherosclerotic mouse model was established by administering a high-fat diet to apolipoprotein-E deficient (ApoE
Results: WZYD decreased the lipid levels in serum, reduced the areas of aortic lesions, and attenuated intimal thickening, which had antiatherosclerotic effects in ApoE
Conclusion: This study revealed that WZYD exerted therapeutic effects on atherosclerosis, and the potential mechanisms were elucidated. Furthermore, it offered a powerful integrated strategy for studying the efficacy of traditional Chinese medicine and exploring its active components and possible mechanisms.

Abstract This study takes a network perspective to examine the spatial spillover effects of haze pollution in Cheng-Yu urban agglomeration which is the fourth largest urban agglomeration and a comprehensive demonstration zone of new urbanization in China. Firstly, we use Granger causality test to construct haze pollution spatial association network, and then we apply social network analysis to reveal the structural characteristics of this network. The results show that: haze pollution in Cheng-Yu urban agglomeration is a complex multithreaded network. Chongqing, Chengdu, Guang'an, Luzhou, Deyang and Nanchong are the centers of the network, sending and transmitting the most relationships. The haze pollution spatial association network can be divided into net beneficiary block, net overflow block, bilateral overflow block and broker block. These four blocks present obvious geographical distribution characteristics and are partly related to the difference of urbanization. The above results contribute by illustrating the current spatial spillover situation of haze pollution and provide a theoretical foundation for the government that it should simultaneously consider cities' statues and their spatial spillover effects in the network rather than simple geographic proximity when formulating future haze pollution control policies in urban agglomeration.
