Abstract Jan Urban (1875 – 1952) was a Czech composer who spent most of his life in the South Slav area. In 1899, he arrived in the Kingdom of Serbia, where he was employed as a military band conductor until 1918, and subsequently continued the same service in the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes and the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. As a military musician, from his original arrival in Serbia until his retirement in 1941, he participated in the two Balkan Wars as well as the First World War. His service during this period made it possible for Urban to work in a variety of different cities. Osijek would be the one city among all others that stood out with its own rich musical traditions, similar to his native Prague, and its unique position within the Habsburg Monarchy until 1918. Among Urban’s most significant works are two operas (Mother and Djul Beaza), two operettas (Iguman’s Sin and Terpsichore), various orchestral compositions (nine “Serbian Dances,” thirteen “Saltarelli,” and twenty overtures and suites), more than fifty piano pieces published before the First World War, and many others.

Abstract Arrays of phthalocyanine molecules on Pb(100) are investigated with scanning tunneling microscopy. Maps of the differential conductance exhibit drastic changes as the sample voltage is being varied. Maximal conductances are observed at positions between the molecules mimicking bonding states. However, the maxima are shown to result from a superposition of non-interacting states. We expect that this effect may be observed from many other molecules.

Abstract Aging and senescence are characterized by pervasive transcriptional dysfunction, including increased expression of transposons and introns. Our aim was to elucidate mechanisms behind this increased expression. Most transposons are found within genes and introns, with a large minority being close to genes. This raises the possibility that transcriptional readthrough and intron retention are responsible for age-related changes in transposon expression rather than expression of autonomous transposons. To test this, we compiled public RNA-seq datasets from aged human fibroblasts, replicative and drug-induced senescence in human cells, and RNA-seq from aging mice and senescent mouse cells. Indeed, our reanalysis revealed a correlation between transposons expression, intron retention, and transcriptional readthrough across samples and within samples. Both intron retention and readthrough increased with aging or cellular senescence and these transcriptional defects were more pronounced in human samples as compared to those of mice. In support of a causal connection between readthrough and transposon expression, analysis of models showing induced transcriptional readthrough confirmed that they also show elevated transposon expression. Taken together, our data suggest that elevated transposon reads during aging seen in various RNA-seq dataset are concomitant with multiple transcriptional defects. Intron retention and transcriptional readthrough are the most likely explanation for the expression of transposable elements that lack a functional promoter.

Abstract The JITAI is an intervention design to support health behavior change. We designed a multi-level modeling framework for JITAIs and developed a proof-of-concept prototype (POC). This study aimed at investigating the usability of the POC by conducting two usability tests with students. We assessed the usability and the students' workload and success in completing tasks. In the second usability test, however, they faced difficulties in completing the tasks. We will work on hiding the complexity of the framework as well as improving the frontend and the instructions.
