Abstract Wang Jimin was not only a distinguished medical historian in modern China and an academician of the International Academy of the History of Science but also an originator of the first Museum of Chinese Medical History and of the Chinese Medical History Society. This study briefly introduces Wang's family academic history, his groundbreaking achievements in studies on medical history and the first monograph of History of Chinese Medicine (English edition) in China. It also reviews the foundation of the first Museum of Chinese Medical History.

Abstract The Shanghai Museum of Traditional Chinese Medicine, formerly known as the Chinese Medical Association Medical History Museum, is the first professional medical history museum in China. Wang Jimin is the main planner and founder of the Medical History Museum of the Chinese Medical Association and served as the first curator. In 1951, the Chinese Medical Association moved to Beijing, and the Medical History Museum stayed in Shanghai. In 1959, it was merged into Shanghai College of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Wang Jimin has been the curator until his death. For 28 years, he has devoted his life to the maintenance and development of the museum. In 1998, the Museum of Medical History was restored to the Chinese Medical Association, and was named the Chinese Medical Association/The Museum of Medical History of Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. In 2003, the Chinese Medical Association/Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine Museum of Medical History merged with the Chinese Herbarium and the Party History School Editing Office. It was named "Shanghai Traditional Chinese Medicine Museum" and was opened in Zhangjiang Campus in 2004. At present, the Shanghai Museum of Traditional Chinese Medicine has a collection of more than 14, 000 pieces. Many of them are rare treasures. Each year, it services about 100, 000 visitors from domestic and abroad, and has held nearly 100 popular science activities. The Museum has held temporary exhibitions in 11 countries overseas in recent years.

Abstract Task switching refers to a set of cognitive processes involved in shifting attention from one task to another. In recent years, researchers have applied transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) to investigate the causal relationship between the parietal cortex and task switching. However, results from available studies are highly inconsistent. This may be due to the unclear understanding of the underlying mechanisms. Therefore, the current study utilized event-related potential (ERP) analysis to investigate the modulatory effects of tDCS on task-switching processes. Twenty-four subjects were recruited to perform both predictable and unpredictable parity/magnitude tasks under anodal (RA) and sham conditions. The results showed no significant changes in behavioral performance. However, marked tDCS-induced ERP changes were observed. Specifically, for the predictable task switching, compared with the sham condition, the target-N2 component occurred significantly earlier for switch trials than repeat trials under the RA condition in males, while no difference was found in females. For unpredictable task switching, under the sham condition, the P2 peak was significantly larger for switch trials compared with repeat trials, whereas this difference was not observed under the RA condition. These results indicated the causal relationship between the right parietal cortex and exogenous adjustment processes involved in task switching. Moreover, anodal tDCS over the right parietal cortex may lead to the manifestation of gender differences.

Abstract The hydrogen bond (HB) between 4-hydroxycinnamic acid (HC4) and glutamic acid E46 of photoactive yellow protein is exceptionally strong. In the 0.82-å resolution X-ray structure for this protein (PDB ID: 1NWZ), the OH…O distance is only 2.57 å. The position of the H atom between these two O atoms has not been determined in that structure, and in the absence of that information, it is impossible to determine whether or not this HB is a low-barrier HB (LBHB), as was proposed recently based on neutron structures of this protein (Yamaguchi et al., Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America, 2009, 106: 440-444). Residual electron density maps computed using the 1NWZ data reveal that this H atom is 0.92 å from the O

Abstract In the absence of protective reducing agents, Cys residues in purified proteins can be oxidized spontaneously by oxygen in the air, as frequently observed in protein crystal structures. However, the formation of an O-bridge via dehydration mechanism between a peroxidized Cys side chain and a primary amine of Lys side chain in proteins has not yet been reported. When an electron density feature was observed for an extra group or an extra atom between side chains of Cys-245 and Lys-158 in the crystal structure of histidinol phosphate phosphatase, mass spectrometric analysis was carried out for its chemical identification. That analysis led to a conclusion that this extra density corresponded to a methylene group. It was then proposed that these two residues were able to absorb CO
