    Abstract Unilateral non-hemorrhagic adrenal infarction (NHAI) is a very uncommon cause of acute abdomen in pregnancy. Diagnosis is highly challenging due to its rarity, heterogeneity of clinical presentation, and inconclusiveness of the initial workup. Timely recognition is pivotal to ensuring optimal outcomes. Here we describe a case of spontaneous unilateral NHAI diagnosed in a singleton pregnant woman at 32 weeks' gestation at our centre and provide the findings of an extensive literature review on the topic. We identified 22 articles describing 31 NHAI cases in 30 obstetric patients: NHAI occurs more frequently on the right side and in the third trimester, and diagnosis is formulated more than 24 h after clinical presentation in 50% of cases; second-level imaging is always necessary to reach a definitive diagnosis and start appropriate treatment. A high degree of clinical suspicion is needed to promptly recognize NHAI in pregnancy, thus allowing appropriate multidisciplinary management and timely treatment initiation. Promotion of knowledge and awareness of NHAI as a potential cause of acute abdomen in pregnancy is mandatory to improve clinical practice and, ultimately, perinatal outcomes.

    Abstract This article presents a unique exercise-associated collapse case during a marathon, highlighting the significance of evidence-based management for athletes on field. The patient, a 61-year-old experienced runner, collapsed near the finish line of the Milano City Marathon. He was aided immediately with CPR and AED. After excluding, through validated algorithms, common and life-threatening causes of collapse, the patient was transferred to hospital. The patient underwent diagnostic procedures, including CT and MRI scans, and hormonal tests that revealed pituitary hemorrhage and underlying coronary artery disease. Follow-up assessments and personalized care were instrumental in the patient's successful recovery and safe return to exercise.

    Abstract Background: Recent evidence revealed significant gaps in the quality of maternal and newborn care in the World Health Organization (WHO) European Region (EUR) countries. Collecting and analyzing women's views on their needs and priorities is crucial for developing actions to improve the quality of maternal and newborn care. With this study from the IMAgiNE EURO Project, we aimed to add to previous quantitative studies by analysing emerging themes from women's suggestions on how to improve the quality of maternal and newborn care during facility-based birth in Italy during the COVID-19 pandemic.
    Methods: We collected data from mothers giving birth during the coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic using a validated online anonymous WHO standard-based questionnaire consisting of open-ended questions. Using a word co-occurrence network (WCON), we analysed responses in Italian from women who gave birth between March 2020 and March 2022. This approach entails a graphical representation of word pairings that frequently co-occur across sentences and compose clusters.
    Results: The texts, produced by 2010 women participating in the study, consisted of 79 204 words and 3833 sentences. Eight clusters emerged with WCON, the three largest of which were related to companionship during childbirth, breastfeeding support, and physical resources. The term "swab", associated with other terms in the COVID-19 domain, had the highest degree of centrality, thus representing a core topic.
    Conclusions: The key emerging themes from women's suggestions can be used to shape policies to improve the quality of care for mothers and newborns. Our WCON analysis offers a valid approach to quickly screen large textual data on quality of care, providing a first set of major themes identified by clusters. As such, it could be used to improve documentation of service users' suggestions promoting the engagement of both researchers and policymakers.

    Abstract Hyperferritinemia is a frequent finding in several conditions, both genetic and acquired. We previously studied eleven healthy subjects from eight different families presenting with unexplained hyperferritinemia. Their findings suggested the existence of an autosomal-recessive disorder. We carried out whole-exome sequencing to detect the genetic cause of hyperferritinemia. Immunohistochemistry and flow cytometry assays were performed on liver biopsies and monocyte-macrophages to confirm the pathogenic role of the identified candidate variants. Through a combined approach of whole-exome sequencing and homozygosity mapping, we found bi-allelic STAB1 variants in ten subjects from seven families. STAB1 encodes the multifunctional scavenger receptor stabilin-1. Immunohistochemistry and flow cytometry analyses showed absent or markedly reduced stabilin-1 in liver samples, monocytes, and monocyte-derived macrophages. Our findings show a strong association between otherwise unexplained hyperferritinemia and bi-allelic STAB1 mutations suggesting the existence of another genetic cause of hyperferritinemia without iron overload and an unexpected function of stabilin-1 in ferritin metabolism.

    Abstract Semitransparent perovskite solar cells (ST-PSCs) are increasingly important in a range of applications, including top cells in tandem devices and see-through photovoltaics. Transparent conductive oxides (TCOs) are commonly used as transparent electrodes, with sputtering being the preferred deposition method. However, this process can damage exposed layers, affecting the electrical performance of the devices. In this study, an indium tin oxide (ITO) deposition process that effectively suppresses sputtering damage was developed using a transition metal oxides (TMOs)-based buffer layer. An ultrathin (<10 nm) layer of evaporated vanadium oxide or molybdenum oxide was found to be effective in protecting against sputtering damage in ST-PSCs for tandem applications, as well as in thin perovskite-based devices for building-integrated photovoltaics. The identification of minimal parasitic absorption, the high work function and the analysis of oxygen vacancies denoted that the TMO layers are suitable for use in ST-PSCs. The highest fill factor (FF) achieved was 76%, and the efficiency (16.4%) was reduced by less than 10% when compared with the efficiency of gold-based PSCs. Moreover, up-scaling to 1 cm

    Abstract Background: The development of standardized treatments for idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (ISSNHL) is hampered by uncertainty over the etiology of this disorder. Systemic steroids are historically the primary therapy, with variable hearing outcomes. Over the last two decades, intratympanic steroids (ITS) and hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) have been proposed as salvage treatments in case of failure of systemic steroids. The present study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of these salvage treatments in addition to systemic steroids.
    Methods: We performed a retrospective study on 75 consecutive patients with a diagnosis of ISSNHL who were admitted to the Department of Otorhinolaryngology of our hospital between December 2018 and December 2022. All patients received primary treatment with systemic steroids. In case of slight or no hearing recovery within the 5th day from the beginning of the therapy (T1), a salvage treatment with ITS or HBOT was proposed. Patients were divided into three groups according to the therapy received: systemic steroids (group A), systemic steroids + HBOT (group B), and systemic steroids + ITS (group C). Pure-tone average at 500, 1000, 2000, and 3000 Hz and the mean gain were evaluated at T1 and 3 months after the beginning of the salvage treatment (T2). The hearing recovery was assessed according to the Siegel's criteria.
    Results: Sixty-two patients (31 men and 31 women, mean age 56 years) with failure of the primary treatment were definitively enrolled in the study: 34 (54.8%) in group A, 16 (25.8%) in group B, and 12 (19.4%) in group C. The ratio of patients responding to therapy was higher in group A (29.4%) than in groups B (18.75%) and C (16.7%). We did not find any statistically significant difference between groups in terms of mean hearing gain at T2 (17.4 ± 15.4 dB in group A vs. 18.6 ± 21.1 dB in group B and 15.7 ± 14.2 dB in group C,
    Conclusion: In our experience, ITS or HBOT associated with systemic steroids, as salvage treatment, did not show significant improvement in hearing outcomes. The evolution of ISSNHL, regardless of the treatment, remains unpredictable.
