Abstract Alterations to the resting-state default mode network (rsDMN) are early indicators of memory decline and Alzheimer's disease (AD). Brain regions shared by the rsDMN and memory circuitry are highly sexually dimorphic. However, data are limited regarding the impact of sex and reproductive status on rsDMN connectivity and memory circuitry and function. In the current investigation, rsDMN connectivity was assessed in 180 early midlife adults aged 45 to 55 by sex and reproductive status (87 women; 93 men). Associations between left and right hippocampal connectivity of rsDMN and verbal memory encoding circuitry were examined using linear mixed models, controlled for age and parental socioeconomic status, testing interactions by sex and reproductive status. Relative to men, women exhibited greater rsDMN connectivity between the left and right hippocampus. In relation to rsDMN-memory encoding connectivity, sex differences were revealed across the menopausal transition, such that only postmenopausal women exhibited loss of the ability to decrease rsDMN left-right hippocampal connectivity during memory encoding associated with poorer memory performance. Results demonstrate that sex and reproductive status play an important role in aging of the rsDMN and interactions with memory circuitry/function. This suggests the critical importance of sex and reproductive status when studying early midlife indicators of memory decline and AD risk.

Abstract Chondroblastoma is a rare bone tumor, most often found in epiphyseal plates of long bones. It has infrequently been reported in the skull, most often in the temporal bone. We present a case of chondroblastoma of the occipital bone in a pediatric patient presenting with a bony protuberance of the occiput and imaging consistent with obstructive hydrocephalus, which persisted even after removal of the obstructing tumor. Pathological examination demonstrated that this unusually placed tumor also lacked the classic genetic markers typically associated with chondroblastoma.

Abstract Unilateral lambdoid craniosynostosis is differentiated from deformational plagiocephaly primarily by assessing the cranium from posterior and bird's-eye views. Findings include posterior displacement of the ipsilateral ear, ipsilateral occipitomastoid bossing, ipsilateral occipitoparietal flattening, contralateral parietal bossing, and contralateral frontal bossing. Diagnosis based off facial morphology may be an easier approach because the face is less obstructed by hair and head-coverings, and can easily be assessed when supine. However, frontofacial characteristics of unilateral lambdoid craniosynostosis are not well described.
Methods: A retrospective cohort review of patients with isolated, unilateral lambdoid craniosynostosis from the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh and the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia was performed. Preoperative frontal and profile photographs were reviewed for salient characteristics.
Results: Nineteen patients met inclusion criteria. Eleven patients had left lambdoid craniosynostosis, and eight had right lambdoid craniosynostosis. All patients were nonsyndromic. Patients demonstrated contralateral parietal bossing and greater visibility of the ipsilateral ear. Contralateral frontal bossing was mild. The orbits were tall and turricephaly was present in varying severity. Facial scoliosis as a C-shaped deformity was present in varying severity. The nasal root and chin pointed to the contralateral side.
Conclusions: The combination of greater visibility of the ipsilateral ear, contralateral parietal bossing, and C-shaped convex ipsilateral facial scoliosis are hallmark frontofacial features of unilateral lambdoid craniosynostosis. Although the ipsilateral ear is more posterior, the greater visibility may be attributed to lateral displacement from the mastoid bulge. Evaluation of long-term postoperative results is needed to assess if this pathognomonic facial morphology is corrected following posterior vault reconstruction.

Abstract Purpose: To develop and validate a novel patient-reported outcome (PRO) measure to assess vision-related functioning in individuals with severe peripheral field loss (PFL).
Design: Prospective outcome measure development/validation study.
Methods: A 127-item questionnaire was developed based on a prior qualitative interview study. A total of 116 participants with severe PFL due to retinitis pigmentosa (RP) or glaucoma were recruited at the Kellogg Eye Center and completed the Likert-scaled telephone-administered questionnaire. Included participants had a horizontal extent of their visual field <20 degrees (RP) or a mixed or generalized stage 4 to 5 defect using the Enhanced Glaucoma Staging System (glaucoma) in the better seeing eye (or in 1 eye if the fellow eye visual acuity was <20/200). Response data were analyzed using exploratory factor analysis and Rasch modeling. Poorly functioning items were eliminated, confirmatory factor analysis was used to ensure scale unidimensionality, and the model was refit to produce the final instrument.
Results: The final Low Vision Severely Constricted Peripheral Eyesight (LV-SCOPE) Questionnaire contains 53 items across 6 domains: mobility, object localization, object recognition, reading, social functioning, and technology. There were 74 items removed because of high missingness, poor factor loadings, low internal consistency, high local dependency, low item information, item redundancy, or differential item functioning. Using Rasch item calibrations, person ability scores could be calculated for each of the 6 unidimensional LV-SCOPE domains with good test-retest stability.
Conclusions: The LV-SCOPE Questionnaire provides a valid and reliable measure of vision-related functioning across 6 key domains relevant to individuals with severe PFL. Findings support the clinical utility of this psychometrically valid instrument.
