Abstract Objectives:  Investigating patterns among the outcomes of patients involved in motor vehicle accidents (MVAs) can provide information necessary to guide targeted interventions to improve road traffic safety. Our purpose is to identify any differences between passenger and driver injury severity and overall clinical course after MVAs.
Methods:  We performed a retrospective review and analysis of 3,693 patients involved in MVAs from 2016 to 2021. We divided the data into two groups, drivers and passengers, and compared the Injury Severity Score (ISS), Revised Trauma Score (RTS) on admission, days in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), length of hospital stay (LOS), post Emergency Department (ED) disposition, discharge (DC) disposition, and signs of life on arrival (SOLA) to the ED. We compared mean ISS, New Injury Severity Score (NISS), RTS, length in ICU and LOS using a student's T-test and SOLA, post-ED and DC disposition using Chi-square analysis.
Results:  We did not find any statistically significant difference in ISS, RTS, days in ICU, LOS, or SOLA between the drivers and passengers. However, we did find a statistically significant difference in the post-ED (X

Abstract Oxytocin has historically been linked to processes involved with maternal behavior. However, the relative importance of oxytocin for maternal behavior widely varies among mammalian species, from indispensable to apparently nonessential. This review proposes a new model in which the relative importance of oxytocin for mothering across species is explained by an evolutionary pressure which we term "allomaternal potential", or the degree to which other conspecifics are capable and likely to assist with caregiving. It is notable that in animals where allomaternal potential is high (i.e., many quality helpers are available), oxytocin is decoupled from mothering. However, in animals where allomaternal potential is low (i.e., conspecifics refuse to, or do not provide, quality help), oxytocin is crucial for mothering. We posit that this relationship is a form of kin selection, whereby oxytocin is a signal that leads mothers to preferentially dispense resources to their own young when quality helpers are unlikely.

Abstract The ability to synthesize arrays of related compounds quickly and with good purity has become critical for a rapid exploration of their properties for biological or material applications. While a number of methods have been developed to enable this combinatorial synthesis, the existing options were not readily appliable to the synthesis of aurones using the simple Knoevenagel condensation approach. In order to avoid the time, expense, and lowered yields associated with flash column chromatography, we developed a scavenging approach for their synthesis. This method uses an excess of aldehyde to ensure complete conversion to aurones, followed by selective removal of the remaining aldehyde using a simple, inexpensive scavenger – isoniazid – and subsequent extraction with dilute acid, to produce the desired compounds with good purity under operationally simple conditions. This approach is expected to be applicable to many other reactions involving aldehydes as one of the reactants.

Abstract We describe the case of a 6-year-old female who presented with tender nodules and fixed flexion of her thumbs, diagnosed as bilateral pediatric trigger thumb. Though present since infancy, her condition was not diagnosed in prior clinical visits. Pediatric trigger digit is a clinical diagnosis, often missed if the digit's range of motion is not assessed routinely. Given the duration, pain, and severity of her condition, conservative management was deferred, and she was referred for surgery. An approach to clinical management is discussed. Ultimately, further study is required to develop structured management guidelines for pediatric trigger digit.

Abstract Abstract The Cumberlandian Combshell (Epioblasma brevidens) is an endangered freshwater mussel endemic to the Tennessee and Cumberland River drainages, major tributaries of the Ohio River of the eastern United States. We conducted mask and snorkel surveys in May and June of 2021 and 2022 to locate, observe, photograph, and video female E. brevidens to document their unique mantle lures at sites in the Clinch River in Tennessee and Virginia. The mantle lure is morphologically specialized mantle tissue that mimics prey items of the host fish. The mantle lure of E. brevidens appears to mimic four distinct characteristics of the reproductive anatomy of the underside (ventral) of a gravid female crayfish, to include: (1) the external apertures of the oviducts located on the base of the third pair of walking legs, (2) crayfish larvae still encased in the egg membrane, (3) pleopods or claws, and (4) postembryonic eggs. Surprisingly, we observed males of E. brevidens displaying mantle lures that were anatomically complex and closely resembled the female mantle lure. The male lure similarly mimics oviducts, eggs, and pleopods but is diminutive (2–3 mm smaller in length or diameter) to those same structures in females. We describe for the first time the mantle lure morphology and mimicry of E. brevidens, showing its close resemblance to the reproductive anatomy of a gravid female crayfish, and a novel form of mimicry in males. To our knowledge, mantle lure displays in males have not been previously documented in freshwater mussels.
