    Abstract Comparing expectation with experience is an important neural computation performed throughout the brain and is a hallmark of predictive processing. Experiments that alter the sensory outcome of an animal's behavior reveal enhanced neural responses to unexpected self-generated stimuli, indicating that populations of neurons in sensory cortex may reflect prediction errors - mismatches between expectation and experience. However, enhanced neural responses to self-generated stimuli could also arise through non-predictive mechanisms, such as the movement-based facilitation of a neuron's inherent sound responses. If sensory prediction error neurons exist in sensory cortex, it is unknown whether they manifest as general error responses, or respond with specificity to errors in distinct stimulus dimensions. To answer these questions, we trained mice to expect the outcome of a simple sound-generating behavior and recorded auditory cortex activity as mice heard either the expected sound or sounds that deviated from expectation in one of multiple distinct dimensions. Our data reveal that the auditory cortex learns to suppress responses to self-generated sounds along multiple acoustic dimensions simultaneously. We identify a distinct population of auditory cortex neurons that are not responsive to passive sounds or to the expected sound but that explicitly encode prediction errors. These prediction error neurons are abundant only in animals with a learned motor-sensory expectation, and encode one or two specific violations rather than a generic error signal.

Together, these findings reveal that cortical predictions about self-generated sounds have specificity in multiple simultaneous dimensions and that cortical prediction error neurons encode specific violations from expectation.

    Abstract Objectives: FcɣRIIa amplifies platelet activation and greater expression increases platelet reactivity. In patients with myocardial infarction (MI), high platelet FcɣRIIa identifies patients with an approximately 4-fold greater risk of MI, stroke, and death. We compared platelet FcɣRIIa in 2 groups: (1) patients who had not had an MI in the previous year and were undergoing cardiac catheterization and percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) labeled as stable coronary artery disease (CAD), and (2) previously obtained results in patients with MI (n = 197).
    Methods: Patients undergoing cardiac catheterization and PCI were enrolled. FcɣRIIa expression was quantified with the use of flow cytometry. Comparisons were made with Mann-Whitney Rank Sum Test and Chi Squared analysis. Significance was defined as P less than .05.
    Results: Compared to patients with MI, patients with stable CAD (n = 49) were older (70 ± 9 years vs 63 ± 12 years) and were more likely to have had prior MI (43% vs 23%), prior revascularization (62% vs 33%), diabetes (35% vs 24%), and hypertension (98% vs 66%). In patients with stable CAD, platelet FcɣRIIa was, on average, lower than that seen in patients with acute MI (9746 ± 4316 vs 11 479 ± 2405 molecules/platelet, P less than .001). Patients with stable CAD exhibited a range of platelet FcɣRIIa (~4500 to ~27 000 molecules/platelet) similar to that seen in acute MI patients (~6500 to ~30 000 molecules/platelet).
    Conclusions: Compared to patients with MI, patients with stable CAD had, on average, lower platelet FcɣRIIa. However, the range of platelet FcɣRIIa was similar to that seen in patients with MI. These results support future studies designed to assess the prognostic implications of platelet FcɣRIIa in patients with stable CAD.

    Abstract Ocean Drilling Program Leg 115 was designed to study Neogene sedimentation history in the western Indian Ocean Basin as well as the Cenozoic evolution of the Reunion hotspot. We describe the paleomagnetic analysis of the sediments recovered on this leg, focusing on the sites that provided the most readily interpretable data: Sites 706, 709, 710, and 711. Sediments from Site 706 show no reversals but appear to give a reliable reversed polarity primary direction, judged on the basis of the demagnetization behavior of individual samples as well as from the results of a fold test formulated by comparing the two holes drilled at this site. Magnetic polarity stratigraphy in sediments from Site 709 can be deduced in two limited sections of Pliocene-Pleistocene and Oligocene-Miocene age. Sediments recovered at Site 710 (and, to a lesser extent, Site 711) render a relatively continuous magnetic polarity stratigraphy that spans most of the Neogene and adds significantly to the body of data available to address problems in Miocene geochronology.
    In addition to these magnetostratigraphic results, the paleomagnetism of these sediments can be used to determine paleolatitude. Using the most reliable inclination measurements from Sites 706, 710, and 711, we compared paleomagnetic estimates of paleolatitude with estimates derived from a hotspot-based absolute plate motion model. Our data, which covers the interval since 33 Ma, shows that paleolatitudes calculated with the geocentric axial dipole assumption are in general accord with the hotspot predictions. However, a correction for the long-term nondipole field brings the paleomagnetic results into even better agreement with plate motions that are based on the fixity of African hotspots.
