    Abstract The prevalence of obesity continues to increase worldwide. Multiple risk factors and complex mechanisms are involved in the development and maintenance of obesity. Recently, emerging evidence has indicated that the circadian rhythm is important for regulating metabolism because the circadian system modulates energy metabolism and enhances certain energetic activities during day and night. Lifestyle also has a great impact on the circadian system. In addition to traditional risk factors, sleep and circadian disruptions are known modifiable risk factors for obesity and other metabolic disorders. This paper reviews recent evidence of relationships between energy metabolism and the circadian system and discusses how sleep disruption and circadian misalignment influence the development of obesity.

    Abstract Diabetes is one of the foremost public health issues worldwide that can lead to complications in many organ systems, and has become a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in Korea. According to data from the National Health Insurance Service (NHIS), about 2.7 million Koreans (8.0%) aged 30 years or older had type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in 2013. The prevalence of T2DM increased with age and rose from 5.6% in 2006 to 8.0% in 2013. Using data based on The Health Screening Service of the NHIS, 25% of Korean adults were reported to have prediabetes in 2013. The prevalence of an impaired fasting glucose tended to increase over time from 21.5% in 2006 to 25.0% in 2013. Even though nationwide health screening has been regularly conducted as a public service, the proportion of undiagnosed cases of diabetes was still reported to be on the higher side in the latest study. Based on the results of these epidemic studies, further actions will be needed to effectively implement lifestyle changes on a social level and increase measures for the early detection of diabetes to stem the tide of the epidemic.

    Abstract The beneficial effects of sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) with low albuminuria levels have not been established. This study aimed to compare the effects of dapagliflozin on kidney injury biomarkers in patients with CKD stratified by albuminuria level. We prospectively enrolled healthy volunteers (HVs; n = 20) and patients with CKD (n = 54) with and without diabetes mellitus. Patients with CKD were divided into two age-matched and sex-matched subgroups according to urinary albumin-creatinine ratio (uACR) levels (<300 mg/g and ≥300 mg/g). The CKD group received dapagliflozin (10 mg/day). Urine samples were collected before treatment and after 3 and 6 months of dapagliflozin. Urinary kidney injury molecule-1 (KIM-1), interleukin-1β (IL-1β), and mitochondrial DNA nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide dehydrogenase subunit-1 (mtND1) copy number were measured. The estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) of patients with CKD was lower than that of HVs (P < 0.001). During the study period, eGFR decreased and uACR did not change in the CKD group. Kidney injury markers were significantly elevated in patients with CKD compared with those in HVs. Dapagliflozin reduced urinary KIM-1, IL-1β, and mtDNA copy number in patients with CKD after 6 months of treatment. In further, the levels of urinary KIM-1 and IL-1β, patients with CKD decreased after 6 months of dapagliflozin treatment regardless of albuminuria level. Dapagliflozin reduced urinary kidney injury biomarkers in patients with CKD, regardless of albuminuria level. These findings suggest that SGLT2 inhibitors may also attenuate the progression of low albuminuric CKD.

    Abstract The wavelength- and polarization-selective Bragg reflection of visible light exhibited by films produced by drying cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) suspensions of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) render these biosourced nanoparticles highly potent for many optical applications. While the conventionally produced films are flat, the CLC-derived helical CNC arrangement would acquire new powerful features if given spherical curvature. Drying CNC suspension droplets does not work, because the onset of kinetic arrest in droplets of anisotropic colloids leads to severe buckling and loss of spherical shape. Here, these problems are avoided by confining the CNC suspension in a spherical microshell surrounding an incompressible oil droplet. This prevents buckling, ensures strong helix pitch compression, and produces single-domain cholesteric spherical reflector particles with distinct visible color. Interestingly, the constrained shrinkage leads to spontaneous puncturing, leaving every particle with a single hole through which the inner oil phase can be extracted for recycling. By mixing two different CNC types at varying fractions, the retroreflection color is tuned throughout the visible spectrum. The new approach adds a versatile tool in the quest to utilize bioderived CLCs, enabling spherically curved particles with the same excellent optical quality and smooth surface as previously obtained only in flat films.

    Abstract Diabetes mellitus is a major risk factor for the development of heart failure. Furthermore, the prognosis of heart failure is worse in patients with diabetes mellitus than in those without it. Therefore, early diagnosis and proper management of heart failure in patients with diabetes mellitus are important. This review discusses the current criteria for diagnosis and screening tools for heart failure and the currently recommended pharmacological therapies for heart failure. We also highlight the effects of anti-diabetic medications on heart failure.

    Abstract Here we report the use of defects in ordered solvents to form, manipulate, and characterize individual molecular assemblies of either small-molecule amphiphiles or polymers. The approach exploits nanoscopic control of the structure of nematic solvents (achieved by the introduction of topological defects) to trigger the formation of molecular assemblies and the subsequent manipulation of defects using electric fields. We show that molecular assemblies formed in solvent defects slow defect motion in the presence of an electric field and that time-of-flight measurements correlate with assembly size, suggesting methods for the characterization of single assemblies of molecules. Solvent defects are also used to transport single assemblies of molecules between solvent locations that differ in composition, enabling the assembly and disassembly of molecular "nanocontainers". Overall, our results provide new methods for studying molecular self-assembly at the single-assembly level and new principles for integrated nanoscale chemical systems that use solvent defects to transport and position molecular cargo.

    Abstract The man-made sea dike has disrupted the natural link between riverine and marine ecosystems and caused eutrophication within the aquatic ecosystem. The eutrophic water discharge has also raised concerns. As a representative tidal flat with the longest dike in the world, Saemangeum has experienced the problem of eutrophication. To elucidate the discharge water effects on the benthic food web dynamics, a four-year round sampling was conducted in/outside of the Saemangeum sea dike. Stable isotope analysis was applied to benthos (a total of 54 species) and their potential diets. Water discharge tripled in period II (2021-2022) compared to the period I (2019-2020). However, there were no significant impact changes in food web structure between the two periods due to improved lake water quality in period II. A positive correlation of nutrient concentration between the inner and outer areas of the dike revealed a direct effect of the water discharge on the outer tidal flat. The water discharge altered the spatial environmental conditions and the food web structure of the outer tidal flat. High TN concentrations stimulated the biomass of microphytobenthos (MPB) near the water gates, which in turn increased MPB consumption by benthos, demonstrating the in/direct impacts of water discharge on the food web. Furthermore, filter feeders exhibited a more sensitive response to spatial organic matter distribution compared to deposit feeders in diet utilization. Overall, our novel findings on food web dynamics in a representative tidal flat with artificial structures emphasize the necessity of continuous monitoring to ensure the sustainability of coastal ecosystems.
