Abstract Increasing concentration of pollutants has significantly affected the quality of water, especially for organic dyes-contained water/wastewater. This is probably reduced effectively through adsorbing the pollutants onto potential materials-based adsorbents. Chitosan/graphene oxide (CTS/GO) hybrid networks utilizing as adsorbents are attracting considerable interest owing to the available functional groups, which can remove plenty of the organic dyes from water/wastewater. In this review, the progress and expansions of CTS/GO hybrid networks-based adsorbents are summarized and discussed in detail. Following the general introduction and properties of each material system (i.e., CTS, GO and CTS/GO hybrid networks), the CTS/GO hybrid networks-based emerging adsorbents with coupling numerous other support materials (i.e., reduced GO, magnetic iron oxide, polymeric materials, metal-organic frameworks, etc.) are compared and discussed in short, at same time that some common organic dyes used in adsorption studies are also introduced. Besides, adsorption technique and mechanisms (i.e., adsorption kinetics and isotherms) focus on the CTS/GO hybrid networks' role are discussed as well. Although there are still some challenges from the reviewed researches, the CTS/GO hybrid networks-based emerging materials can be considered promising and potential adsorbents. Moreover, this review can provide a clear overview of CTS/GO hybrid networks-based adsorbents in organic dye removal applications to readers.

Abstract Bamboo and coffee, which are abundant and inexpensive, have been used as green adsorbents for the adsorption of industrial dye rhodamine B (RB). Bamboo and coffee are natural sources of cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin, making them promising green materials for industrial dye removal. The effects of various adsorption conditions, such as contact time, temperature, dose of bamboo powder (BP), coffee ground (CG), initial concentration of RB, and pH values of RB solution, were measured. Consequently, the kinetics of RB adsorption onto bamboo and coffee was in accordance with the pseudo-second-order model, with an activation energy of 29.51 kJ mol

Abstract Chitosan (CTS) is considered to be a common biomacromolecule/poly-cationic compound containing the potential functional groups that can be utilized as a feedstock for novel materials. In this study, CTS/graphene oxide (CTS/GO, CG) mixtures were prepared at different conditions to confirm a suitable hydrogel formation, then applied to produce paper-like materials with various thickness via a simple casting method. As a result, the morphological structure of finally yielded the paper-like materials (CG2 papers with the various number of casting times) obtained the layer-by-layer structures instead of the tightly-sticky paper-like structure (GO paper). Basing on the possible interactions between the CTS molecules and GO nanosheets occurred in the CG mixtures could be also determined by FTIR and Raman analysis; concomitantly, its thermal property reaches higher than that of the pure GO. Notably, the strong interactions and compatibility of the CTS molecules and GO nanosheets revealed a good dispersion and interfacial adhesion leading to significantly enhancing the mechanical properties of the CG2 paper-like materials with increasing number of casting times or comparing to GO paper. Therefore, the CG2 paper-like materials with the various number of casting times fabricated in the present study can expose new approaches for the design and application of future foil/paper-like materials, as well as the desired thickness of these foil/paper-like materials can be controlled easily.

Abstract Abstract Bamboo and coffee, which are abundant and inexpensive, have been used as green adsorbents for the adsorption of industrial dye rhodamine B (RB). Consequently, the kinetics of RB adsorption onto bamboo and coffee was in accordance with the pseudo-second-order model, with an activation energy of 29.51 kJ mol−1 for bamboo and 27.46 kJ mol−1 for coffee. The Langmuir model is well fitted to the whole adsorption period at different temperatures, in which the increase in the tested temperature has improved the adsorption capacity (i.e., BP: 6.76 mg g−1/30 °C, 6.96 mg g−1/40 °C, 7.64 mg g−1/50 °C and CG: 6.53 mg g−1/30 °C, 6.80 mg g−1/40 °C, 7.51 mg g−1/50 °C). Moreover, the spontaneous nature of the adsorption was based on the negative Gibbs free energy values obtained (i.e., from − 11.09 to − 14.30 kJ mol−1 [BP] and from − 10.34 to − 13.07 kJ mol−1 [CG]). These revealed that RB adsorption occurred at physical and chemical adsorption states. In addition, the recycling capability of adsorbents was determined in five cycles. Therefore, these materials are promising candidates for low-cost adsorbents.

Abstract The gelatin/chitosan (GEL/CTS, GC) membranes have been fabricated well by a simple in-situ method. The as-prepared GC membranes were characterized by morphological surface (scanning electron microscopy, SEM), chemical (Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, FT-IR), crystallinity (X-ray diffraction, XRD), thermal (thermal gravimetric analysis, TGA), mechanical (tensile test), hydrophilic (water contact angle), and swelling properties to elucidate the changes in their chemical structures and morphologies. The morphological structure of the GC membranes was found to be very smooth, non-rough and homogeneous. The FT-IR and XRD studies manifest that the GC membranes have good interaction and compatibility between GEL and CTS in the hydrogel mixture. The prepared GC membranes also obtain better thermal, mechanical and swelling properties comparing to the raw CTS molecule. These results suggest that the nontoxic GC membrane can become a preferred hydrogel membrane in the field of wound dressing or tissue-engineering applications.

Abstract In this study, we explore an a new crosslinker (bis-butyl succinate, BBS) with terminal alkyne group to react with glycidyl azide polymer-based polyurethane (original PU) via “azide-alkyne” click reaction, which has supported enhancing mechanical properties and cross-link densities of modified PUs with BBS. Besides, this crosslinker has been designed and synthesized successfully via an esterification reaction to can incorporate with the original PU through the formation of 1,2,3-triazole groups. Moreover, the mechanical properties of resultant modified PUs are investigated to indicate a relationship of mole ratio of [C≡C]/[N3] and cross-link density. Specifically, the stress and Young’s modulus of the modified PUs increase, whereas their strain decrease on increasing the synthesized BBS content regarding to the increased rigid 1,2,3-triazole networks, as well as the cross-link densities of the modified PUs increase with the BBS content through the Mooney-Rivlin equation. As such, there is an enhancement in the mechanical behaviors of the original PU cross-linked with BBS.

Abstract The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) [2019-nCoV; severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2)] was first detected in Wuhan, China at the end of 2019. In current status, spread of COVID-19 in person-to-person could be caused mainly by respiratory droplets, which leads to the spread of the influenza virus in both community and clinicians. Thus, in order to reduce the risk of that, the urgent management strategies against COVID-19 are to block transmission, isolation, protection, and using drug or vaccine updated on an ongoing basis. unfortunately, no drugs or vaccines still has yet been allowed to treat patients with COVID-19, so the rapid detection of effective intercessions against COVID-19 is seemed a major challenge on the all world. Herein, this article attempts summarizing to introduce the characterization of COVID-19, the influence of droplets travel in person-to-person transmission and the effect of wearing masks in the infection prevention of influenza virus, as well as understanding its advantage and role in the coronavirus infection prevention.
