Abstract Our aim is to investigate the prevalence and risk factors associated with hypertension among the Chinese Qiang population. From September 2012 to March 2013, a cross-sectional study was conducted in urban and rural communities of the Qiang population using multistage cluster sampling. A total of 2676 people aged above 20 years were enrolled in the analysis. Standardized mercury sphygmomanometer was used to measure the blood pressure twice after a 10-minute seated rest, and the average blood pressure was obtained. The hypertension prevalence among the population aged above 20 years was 13.9%, and age-standardized prevalence was 12.3%. Male and female prevalence of hypertension, as well as the prevalence in urban and rural areas, all increased with age. There were no significant differences between males and females and between urban and rural residents. Among hypertensive patients, 44.2% were aware of their hypertension, 38.0% were undergoing antihypertensive treatment, but only 10.5% achieved blood pressure control. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that the risk factors of hypertension included age, low income, overweight and obesity, family history of hypertension. The prevalence of hypertension in Chinese Qiang adults is significantly lower than the national level. Awareness, treatment, and control rates of hypertension were low in the Qiang population. Thus, hypertension-related health knowledge should be more aggressively delivered to improve public awareness and the capacity of community health services should be strengthened.

Abstract In order to study the effective mechanism of a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), modified Jiu Wei Qiang Huo decoction (MJWQH), against H1N1-induced pneumonia in mice, we chose a holistic approach. A reverse-phase liquid chromatography with quadruple time-of-flight mass spectrometry (LC-Q-TOF-MS) was developed to determine metabolomic biomarkers in mouse serum for the MJWQH effects. Thirteen biomarkers of H1N1-induced pneumonia in mice serum were identified, which comprised l-valine, lauroylcarnitine, palmitoyl-l-carnitine, l-ornithine, uric acid, taurine, O-succinyl-l-homoserine, l-leucine, l-phenylalanine, PGF2α, 20-ethyl-PGE2, arachidonic acid, and glycerophospho-N-arachidonoyl ethanolamine. Among them, metabolites of amino acids, fatty acids and arachidonic acid had the most relevant changes in mice with H1N1-induced pneumonia. MJWQH effectively improved weight loss, lung index, biomarkers and inflammatory mediators such as prostaglandin E2 and phospholipase A2 in the infected mice. Importantly, MJWQH reversed the elevated biomarkers to the control levels from the infection, which provided a systematic view and a theoretical basis for its prevention or treatment. The results suggest that the protective effect of MJWQH against H1N1-induced pneumonia is possibly through regulation of pathways for amino acid, fatty acid and arachidonic acid metabolism. They also suggest that the LC-MS-based metabolomic strategy is a powerful tool for elucidation of the mechanisms of TCM.

Abstract Background: Kaschin-Beck disease (KBD), a special type of osteoarthritis, is a disabling degenerative disease and it can cause severe dysarthrosis of joints. This study was undertaken to investigate the prevalence of KBD among Tibetan children in the Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture in Sichuan Province and to provide evidence for KBD control in the western regions of China.
Methods: Eleven counties were selected as the monitoring regions and all Tibetan children aged 6-13 years were selected as the study subjects. A questionnaire survey and clinical and radiological examinations (right hand and wrist) were performed. KBD was diagnosed according to the Chinese Radiological Criteria of Kaschin-Beck Disease Diagnosis (GB16003-1995).
Results: X-ray analysis showed that all counties belonged to controlled endemic areas, and 4 of them were confirmed as active endemic areas for KBD. The overall detection rate of KBD in the Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture was 2.09% in 2007, 2.66% in 2008, and 1.20% in 2009. The majority of pediatric patients were found in Jinchuan and Markang counties.
Conclusions: Although the prevalence of KBD showed a decreasing trend in the Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture, some new pediatric cases are still emerging. Therefore, comprehensive measures should be taken to prevent the occurrence of the disease in children, and an effective preventive program should be set up in the prefecture.
