    Abstract Objective: To investigate the protective effects against abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB) and possible mechanisms of Xue Ping tablets (XPT) using a rat model.
    Methods: A total of 58 unmated female and 25 male SPF SD rats aged 8-9 weeks were selected. Eight unmated female rats were selected as the blank control group according to the complete random method. The other 50 rats were mated in a female/male ratio of 2:1. In the morning after mating, vaginal smears were collected. Presence of vaginal plug or sperm was regarded as the first day of pregnancy. All pregnant rats were given 8.3 mg/kg of mifepristone by gavage at 8:00 a.m. and 100 μg/kg misoprostol by gavage at 6:00 p.m. on the seventh day of pregnancy to induce incomplete abortion, thereby establishing a rat model of AUB. Forty rats were randomly divided into model, low- (220 mg/kg), medium- (441 mg/kg), high-dose (882 mg/kg) XPT, and positive control groups. The positive group was given 130 mg/kg Gong Xue Ning (GXN). The model group and the blank group were given an equal amount of distilled water.

    Abstract Objectives: Yu-Ping-Feng-San (YPFS) is a classical traditional Chinese medicine that is widely used for treatment of the diseases in respiratory systems, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) recognized as chronic inflammatory disease. However, the molecular mechanism remains unclear. Here we detected the factors involved in transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGF-β1)/Smad2 signaling pathway and inflammatory cytokines, to clarify whether YPFS could attenuate inflammatory response dependent on TGF-β1/Smad2 signaling in COPD rats or cigarette smoke extract (CSE)-treated human bronchial epithelial (Beas-2B) cells.
    Materials and methods: The COPD rat model was established by exposure to cigarette smoke and intratracheal instillation of lipopolysaccharide, YPFS was administered to the animals. The efficacy of YPFS was evaluated by comparing the severity of pulmonary pathological damage, pro-inflammation cytokines, collagen related genes and the activation of TGF-β1/Smad2 signaling pathway. Furthermore, CSE-treated cells were employed to confirm whether the effect of YPFS was dependent on the TGF-β1/Smad2 signaling via knockdown Smad2 (Si-RNA), or pretreatment with the inhibitor of TGF-β1.
    Results: Administration of YPFS effectively alleviated injury of lung, suppressed releasing of pro-inflammatory cytokines and collagen deposition in COPD animals (
    Conclusion: YPFS accomplished anti-inflammatory effects mainly by suppressing phosphorylation of Smad2, TGF-β1/Smad2 signaling pathway was required for YPFS-mediated anti-inflammation in COPD rats or CSE-treated Beas-2B cells.

    Abstract Purpose: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a complex genetic disease associated with genetic and environmental factors. Previous studies have shown that changes in the gut microbiota may affect the development of host metabolic diseases and promote the progression of T2DM. Tang-ping-san (TPS) decoction can effectively treat T2DM. However, its specific mechanisms must be evaluated.
    Patients and methods: In the present study, we established an animal model of T2DM using a high‑fat diet (HFD) with intraperitoneal injection streptozotocin injection.
    Results: The therapeutic effect of TPS decoction on T2DM in mice was initially evaluated. TPS decoction was found to improve hyperglycemia, hyperlipidemia, insulin resistance, and pathological liver, pancreatic, and colon changes. Moreover, it reduced the pro-inflammatory cytokine levels.     Conclusion: TPS decoction improves T2DM and liver function and reduces the risk of hyperglycemia, hyperlipidemia, insulin resistance, pathological organ changes, and inflammatory reactions.     Abstract Abstract: In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), Yu-Ping-Feng powder (YPFP) has been used to treat allergic rhinitis (AR) for centuries. However, the mechanisms underlying its effects or its molecular targets in AR treatment are yet to be elucidated. Therefore, the active compounds of YPFP and their targets were collected and identified from the Traditional Chinese Medicine Systems Pharmacology database. Moreover, AR-associated targets were acquired from the GeneCards and Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man database. Proteins interactions network of YPFP presumed targets and AR-associated targets were examined and merged to reveal the candidate YPFP targets against AR.Cytoscape software and BisoGenet Database were employed to perform the Visualization and Integrated Discovery (Cluster Profiler R package, version: 3.8.1). Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes and genome pathway analyses. To identify the key target genes, a gene-pathway network has been constructed.We identified 44 effective active compounds and 622 YPFP targets. Also 1324 target genes related to AR were identified. Twenty pathways, including those of AGE-RAGE signaling, fluid shear stress, atherosclerosis, PI3K-Akt signaling, and tumor necrosis factor signaling was enriched significantly. MAPK1 was identified as the core gene, while others including RELA, AKT1, NFKBIA, IL6, and JUN, were also important in the gene-pathway network. Clearly, network pharmacology can be applied in revealing the molecular targets and mechanisms of action of complex herbal preparations.These findings suggested that YPFP could treat AR by regulating immunological functions, diminishing inflammation, and improving immunity through different pathways.

    Abstract Background: The potential treatment effects and safety of Yu ping feng san (YPFS) for pediatric allergic rhinitis (PAR) patients have yet to be studied systematically.
    Objectives: To assess the effects and safety of YPFS for treat pediatric patients, allergic rhinitis.
    Methods: We systematically searched PubMed, EMBASE (Excerpta Medical Database), Cochrane library, Chinese Cochrane Centre's Controlled Trials Register platform, Wanfang Chinese Digital Periodical and Conference Database, China National Knowledge Infrastructure Database, and VIP Chinese Science, from inception dates to November 1, 2019. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were included. The risk of bias in the trials was assessed in accordance with the Cochrane Handbook, version 5.1.0. RevMan 5.3 software was used to perform a meta-analysis. Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation methodology was applied to evaluate the evidence quality for each outcome. The quality of evidence for each outcome measurement was low for 4 outcomes and very low for 5 outcomes.
    Results: A total of 10 RCTs involving 1069 participants (3-15 years old) fulfilled the inclusion criteria. After exclusion, 8 RCTs were pooled for efficacy assessment. The overall efficacy evaluation result did not show benefit for the experimental group (relative risk 0.32, CI 95% 0.24-0.45; P = .98;) Investigation of variation of serum IgA, immunoglobulin E, IgG in three studies in 2 groups returned no statistical significance. YPFS gave relatively better safety (relative risk 0.29, CI 95% 0.14-0.58; P = .0005; Fig. S8, http://links.lww.com/MD/F751) and lower recurrence rates than did Western medical therapy.
    Conclusions: Current evidence cannot support the routine use of YPFS for treatment of PAR. This may be due to poor-quality study-design limitations of the included YPFS studies. Our data showed that the use of YPFS for PAR is relatively safe compared to Western medical therapy, but a conclusion could not be drawn because only 5 studies were analyzed. Every study suffered from some methodological limitation. Therefore, further large, rigorously-designed studies are necessary to determine conclusively the utility of YPFS in PAR.

    Abstract The traditional blue brick was the dominant clay brick used in Chinese architecture before the mid-nineteenth century. The ancient city of Ping Yao, a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) heritage site, is an outstanding example of blue brick architecture. The Ping Yao bricks within the damp areas (up to 4 m at highest) of the ancient city's walls and private houses are subjected to various weathering, including contour scaling, flaking, powdering and salt crystallization. This study aims to characterize the properties, analyse weathering mechanisms, determine the main weathering factors and discuss the anti-weathering strategies of blue bricks. To do so, samples of brick and salt efflorescence were collected from the historical buildings of Ping Yao and were studied with regard to their mineralogical and physico-mechanical (e.g. density, porosity, pore size distribution, water absorption and uniaxial compressive strength) properties. The resistance to salt crystallization and frost, and the maximum firing temperatures of the brick samples were determined in the laboratory. Weathering mechanisms and anti-weathering strategies were discussed. Salt crystallization and freeze-thaw cycles were found to be two important factors that lead to brick weathering. An anti-weathering strategy of 'damp blocking, desalination and brick replacing' was discussed based on the laboratory experiments, suggestions in literature and site conditions.

    Abstract Cisplatin is one of the first line anti-cancer drugs prescribed for treatment of solid tumors; however, the chemotherapeutic drug resistance is still a major obstacle of cisplatin in treating cancers. Yu Ping Feng San (YPFS), a well-known ancient Chinese herbal combination formula consisting of Astragali Radix, Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma and Saposhnikoviae Radix, is prescribed as a herbal decoction to treat immune disorders in clinic. To understand the fast-onset action of YPFS as an anti-cancer drug to fight against the drug resistance of cisplatin, we provided detailed analyses of intracellular cisplatin accumulation, cell viability, and expressions and activities of ATP-binding cassette transporters and glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) in YPFS-treated lung cancer cell lines. In cultured A549 or its cisplatin-resistance A549/DDP cells, application of YPFS increased accumulation of intracellular cisplatin, resulting in lower cell viability. In parallel, the activities and expressions of ATP-binding cassette transporters and GSTs were down-regulated in the presence of YPFS. The expression of p65 subunit of NF-κB complex was reduced by treating the cultures with YPFS, leading to a high ratio of Bax/Bcl-2, i.e. increasing the rate of cell death. Prim-O-glucosylcimifugin, one of the abundant ingredients in YPFS, modulated the activity of GSTs, and then elevated cisplatin accumulation, resulting in increased cell apoptosis. The present result supports the notion of YPFS in reversing drug resistance of cisplatin in lung cancer cells by elevating of intracellular cisplatin, and the underlying mechanism may be down regulating the activities and expressions of ATP-binding cassette transporters and GSTs.

    Abstract Chemo-resistance is an obstacle in therapy of lung cancer. Alternative therapy of using herbal medicine has been proposed to resolve this obstacle. Yu Ping Feng San (YPFS), a common Chinese herbal medicinal mixture, has been reported to show anti-drug resistance on cisplatin (DDP), a common lung cancer drug. To optimize the anti-cancer function of YPFS, different Chinese herbal extracts having known function to overcome lung cancer were screened in combining with YPFS, as to increase the efficacy of DDP in drug resistance lung cancer cell, A549/DDP.
