Abstract Using microdata from the Japanese Panel Survey of Consumers, this article examines the relationship between marriage and wealth among women. By exploiting unique data on personal wealth, it also assesses whether the wealth effect of marriage differs depending on whether wealth is measured as household or personal wealth, an issue that very few studies have examined. When wealth is measured as equivalized household net worth, on the assumption that married couples share household resources equally, marriage is found to contribute to women's wealth holdings but only to their nonfinancial net worth; however, the results show signs that marriage also contributes to women's total net worth as marriage durations increase. By contrast, when wealth is measured as personal net worth based on the actual ownership of assets, marriage is found to be negatively and significantly associated with women's wealth holdings. These findings underscore the fact that Japanese women are potentially in a financially vulnerable position even after marriage, which is at least partly driven by married women's career disruptions arising from their family responsibilities.

Abstract Background: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) ranges from mild to severe symptoms, with autistic traits possibly distributed throughout the population. However, the precise neurodevelopmental differences in children with autistic traits remain unknown.
Subjects and methods: Fifty-three healthy volunteers (32 male and 21 female, mean [standard deviation] age: 12.9 [2.5] years) having a normal intelligence quotient and without social impairment were divided into two groups according to scores of the Pervasive Developmental Disorders Autism Society Japan Rating Scale (PARS). Subjects with or without autistic traits were placed into the high-PARS (n = 14) or low-PARS (n = 39) group, respectively. Activation of the prefrontal cortex was estimated using change in hemoglobin oxygenation concentration (Δ[oxy-Hb]) on near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) during a verbal fluency test. Age-related changes in prefrontal cortex activation were first assessed for each group. Then, the effects of age (elementary school age or junior/senior high school age) and PARS score on Δ[oxy-Hb] in the task were analyzed by two-way analysis of variance.
Results: We observed significant positive correlations between mean Δ[oxy-Hb] and age in the prefrontal cortex region in the low-PARS group. Mean Δ[oxy-Hb] in the low-PARS group was significantly higher than in the high-PARS group. Task performance results were comparable between the groups.
Conclusion: In PARS-determined typically developed children, prefrontal cortex activation on NIRS correlated positively with age. In healthy volunteers without ASD but harboring autistic traits, prefrontal cortex activation was markedly lower than in normal counterparts. Our results provide biological evidence that ASD may be a pervasively distributed disorder.

Abstract Background: Cough is one of the symptoms of the post-COVID-19 condition. However, the factors associated with its development remain unclear. We evaluated the factors associated with chronic cough in the post-COVID-19 condition.
Methods: In this survey, 170 individuals who previously had COVID-19 and were admitted to Aichi Hospital between October 2020 and October 2021 were included. Using self-developed questionnaires and visual analog scales, 19 symptoms, including cough, were assessed. Cough-specific quality of life (QoL), reflux-related symptoms, and abnormal laryngeal sensations were also evaluated. The patients' clinical characteristics and indices, including cough-specific QoL, at admission were extracted from their medical records. Multivariate regression analyses were conducted to determine the factors associated with cough-related outcomes, such as prevalence, QoL, and severity, in the post-COVID-19 condition.
Results: The median length (range) of the survey after recovery from COVID-19 was 158 (95-467) days. Cough was prevalent (n = 41, 24 %) and often accompanied by other symptoms, including gastrointestinal symptoms. Cough-specific QoL after recovery was correlated with reflux-related symptoms and abnormal laryngeal sensations. Multivariate analyses revealed that gastrointestinal symptoms, sputum, and chronic cough before contracting COVID-19 are significant predictors of cough-related outcomes in the post-COVID-19 condition. Meanwhile, other indices including cough-specific QoL on the acute phase were not reliable predictors in the post-COVID-19 condition.
Conclusions: Cough during the post-COVID-19 condition had a negative impact on daily life activities. Gastrointestinal symptoms could play a significant role in the pathophysiology of cough in such a condition.

Abstract Aim: To clarify the factors affecting early career registered nurses' (ECRNs') views on building good nurse-patient relationships.
Design: An exploratory qualitative research design was implemented using detailed individual semi-structured interviews.
Methods: Interview data were analysed using a thematic approach based on the systematic text condensation analysis proposed by Malterud.
Data sources: Eleven consenting nurses working in four hospitals.
Results: Six characteristics were identified that influenced ECRNs' perceptions of building good nurse-patient relationships: finding clues through reflection, observing patients' reactions, clarifying their role as a nurse, doing their best for the patients, treating each patient as an irreplaceable individual and receiving support.
Conclusions: We discovered that the factors affecting ECRNs' views could be divided into two categories: factors that contribute to ECRNs' views on developing positive relationships with patients, and factors that influence ECRNs' relationships with patients but do not directly lead to positive relationships. It is critical for ECRNs to reflect on their experiences of poor relationship-building and observe patients' reactions. ECRNs seldom recognize that they have developed good relationships with their patients. It is critical to consider organizational environment and support as variables in developing a nurse-patient relationship so that the responsibility does not fall solely on ECRNs.
Implications: The results of this study provide clues to help ECRNs overcome difficulties in building relationships with patients. Furthermore, they can be used to develop educational programme for ECRNs. Future studies should use these findings to provide support to ECRNs and help them build relationships with patients.

Abstract Replicative DNA polymerases are blocked at DNA lesions. Synthesis past DNA damage requires the replacement of the replicative polymerase by one of a group of specialised translesion synthesis (TLS) polymerases, most of which belong to the Y-family. Each of these has different substrate specificities for different types of damage. In eukaryotes mono-ubiquitination of PCNA plays a crucial role in the switch from replicative to TLS polymerases at stalled forks. All the Y-family polymerases have ubiquitin binding sites that increase their binding affinity for ubiquitinated PCNA at the sites of stalled forks.

Abstract Introduction: This study included patients who underwent full-thickness skin reconstruction using a two-stage procedure comprising basic fibroblast growth factor-impregnated collagen gelatin sponge (bFGF-CGS) implantation and autologous skin grafting, and the take rate of skin grafts was compared between groups of patients who underwent autologous skin grafting after a waiting period of <2 weeks or ≥2 weeks.
Methods: An acute, full-thickness skin defect was treated with thorough debridement of contaminated/necrotic tissue, followed by washing with saline and hemostasis with electrocautery. Then, an FGF-CGS was fixed to the skin defect wound using non-absorbable sutures, and after confirming regeneration of sufficient dermis-like tissue, the second-stage autologous skin grafting was performed for wound closure. Patients were divided into two groups according to the waiting period before the second operation, namely, <2 weeks (early group) and ≥2 weeks (late group), and the take rate of skin grafts was compared.
Results: We enrolled and treated 25 cases (18 men, 7 women; mean age: 49 [range 2-86] years). The mean take rate of skin grafts was 93% (range 80%-100%) in the early group and 92% (range 65%-100%) in the late group, with no significant difference between the two groups. There was a significant difference between the groups in mean time to complete healing: 25.2 ± 9.7 days in the early group vs 44.7 ± 27 days in the late group (p < 0.05).
Conclusion: Our data suggest that bFGF-CGF can form dermis-like granulation tissue with sufficient quality as a graft bed for skin transplantation within 2 weeks.

Abstract Neuropeptide (NPY) increases feeding when injected into the brain. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that its action might be related to feeding regulation of the orexin and leptin systems in rats. Intracerebroventricular administration of NPY (1 nmol/5 microL) stimulated feeding in rats. Injection of an antibody to orexin-A inhibited feeding, suggesting that endogenous orexin exerts a stimulatory tone on feeding. Intracerebroventricular injection of orexin antiserum before injection of NPY significantly attenuated the feeding response to NPY. On the other hand, ip pretreatment with leptin (2 mg/kg) significantly decreased food intake and inhibited NPY-induced feeding. We then examined whether orexin-containing neurons are activated under the stimulation of feeding in response to intracerebroventricular NPY or suppression of feeding in response to ip leptin, using Fos-like immunoreactivity (FLI) as a marker of neural activation. We observed that FLI was induced in the paraventricular, supraoptic, and dorsomedial nuclei as well as the lateral hypothalamic area (LHA) following administration of NPY. Double staining with anti-Fos and antiorexin antibodies revealed that 23.4% of the orexin-containing neurons in the LHA expressed FLI after NPY injection. Approximately 7.8% of the orexin-positive neurons in the LHA coexpressed Fos after leptin plus NPY. Our data indicate that a functional interaction among NPY, orexin, and leptin exists that may contribute to the central regulation of appetite.

Abstract Spontaneous testicular teratomas (STTs) are tumours comprising a diverse array of cell and tissue types, which are derived from pluripotent stem-like cells called embryonal carcinoma cells (ECCs). Although mouse ECCs originate from primordial germ cells (PGCs) in embryonic testes, the molecular basis underlying ECC development remains unclear. This study shows that the conditional deletion of mouse Dead end1 (Dnd1) from migrating PGCs leads to STT development. In Dnd1-conditional knockout (Dnd1-cKO) embryos, PGCs colonise the embryonic testes but fail to undergo sexual differentiation; subsequently, ECCs develop from a portion of the PGCs. Transcriptomic analyses reveal that PGCs not only fail to undergo sexual differentiation but are also prone to transformation into ECCs by upregulating the expression of marker genes for primed pluripotency in the testes of Dnd1-cKO embryos. Thus, our results clarify the role of Dnd1 in developing STTs and developmental process of ECC from PGC, providing novel insights into pathogenic mechanisms of STTs.

Abstract Background: Ventricular arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) are localized in the ventricles and are mainly fed by the anterior choroidal artery (AChoA) and posterior choroidal artery (PChoA). Surgical resection of ventricular AVMs is difficult as the lesions are localized deep in the brain. Therefore, endovascular treatment is expected to treat ventricular AVMs. However, embolization from the AChoA and PChoA carries the risk of ischemic complications. Even though there are some major reports on embolization strategies from the choroidal arteries, embolization of these arteries remains technically challenging. In this article, we report two successful cases of ventricular AVM embolization using AChoA and PChoA.
Case description: Case 1: A 34-year-old male presented with intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH). Subsequently, ventricular AVM embolization in the anterior horn was performed using n-butyl-2-cyanoacrylate (NBCA) through the AChoA and medial PChoA, and complete obliteration was observed without neurological deterioration. Case 2: A 71-year-old female presented with IVH. Subsequently, ventricular AVM embolization in the lateral ventricle was performed through the AChoA and lateral PChoA with Onyx and NBCA, and partial obliteration was observed without complications. Furthermore, Gamma Knife surgery for residual lesions resulted in complete obliteration.
Conclusion: Embolization through the choroidal arteries for ventricular AVMs is an effective curative or adjunctive treatment.

Abstract A skin paddle severely impairs the appearance of the reconstructed breast. We have established a new technique called "minimal scar autologous breast reconstruction" involving delayed nipple reconstruction using a local flap designed on the skin paddle and simultaneous resection of the residual skin paddle.
Methods: We analyzed 20 patients with unilateral breast cancer who underwent skin-sparing mastectomy followed by immediate breast reconstruction using a free flap (deep inferior epigastric perforator flap in 13 patients and profunda artery perforator flap in seven). Approximately 1 year after primary reconstruction, nipple reconstruction using an arrow flap designed on the skin paddle and resection of the residual skin paddle were performed. Several months later, medical areola tattooing was performed. Bilateral breast symmetry scores, obtained from the distances between anatomic landmarks, were compared before and after breast reconstruction.
Results: Postoperative complications such as necrosis of the reconstructed nipple were not observed after two-stage reconstruction, and all procedures including total resection of the skin paddle, nipple reconstruction, and medical tattooing were performed successfully in all cases. Aesthetic outcomes were excellent: comparison of symmetry scores showed no significant differences in any parameters between before surgery and after reconstruction of the nipple-areola complex.
Conclusions: We have established step-by-step strategies for mastectomy, autologous breast reconstruction, and then nipple reconstruction, keeping in mind that the skin paddle would later be totally resected in nipple reconstruction, and thereby achieved breast reconstruction with markedly reduced postoperative scarring compared with conventional autologous breast reconstruction.
