Abstract Patients suffering from Long-COVID syndrome experience a variety of different symptoms on a physical, but also on a psychological and social level. Previous psychiatric conditions such as depression and anxiety have been identified as separate risk factors for developing Long-COVID syndrome. This suggests a complex interplay of different physical and mental factors rather than a simple cause-effect relationship of a specific biological pathogenic process. The biopsychosocial model provides a foundation for understanding these interactions and integrating them into a broader perspective of the patient suffering from the disease instead of the individual symptoms, pointing towards the need of treatment options on a psychological as well as social level besides biological targets. This leads to our conclusion, that the biopsychosocial model should be the underlying philosophy of understanding, diagnosing and treating patients suffering from Long-COVID syndrome, moving away from the strictly biomedical understanding suspected by many patients, treaters and the media while also reducing the stigma still associated with the suggestion of a physical-mental interplay.

Abstract Introduction: Anorexia nervosa is a frequent eating disorder that affects predominantly young women and may take a severe and chronically worsening course of disease contributing to its high mortality rate. Although a multitude of treatment options exist, this disease still bears a high relapse rate. In light of these facts, an improvement of existing and development of new treatment targets and options is warranted.
Areas covered: The present review article covers recent developments in psychotherapy associated with the respective neuropsychological and brain alterations as well as highlights current and future pharmacotherapeutic options.
Expert opinion: Several encouraging developments in the field of psychotherapy such as interventions targeting neurocognitive profiles or addressing reward processing, brain stimulation as well as pharmacological modulation of hormones, namely leptin, oxytocin, ghrelin and nesfatin-1 signaling might be - most likely as part of a multimodal treatment approach - efficacious in order to improve treatment of patients with anorexia nervosa, especially those with a severe course of disease as well as comorbidities. As anorexia nervosa represents a complex and severe mental disorder, it seems most likely that a combination and integration of different evidence-based treatment approaches and settings will contribute to an improved prognosis of this eating disorder. This should be further explored in future studies.

Title translation Hypnotherapy for Irritable Bowel Syndrome.
Abstract Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a functional disorder of the lower digestive tract. Based on the biopsychosocial model, there is a wide range of therapeutic interventions to deal with the symptoms of IBS and to improve the quality of life of those who are affected. In this context, hypnotherapy and in particular gut-directed hypnosis represents a psychotherapeutic intervention with great empirical evidence for its efficacy.

Abstract Functional dyspepsia is one of the most commonly diagnosed disorders of the gut-brain interaction worldwide. The precise pathogenesis of functional dyspepsia is complex and remains incompletely understood. Therefore, advances in the understanding of functional dyspepsia could change clinical practice. The aim of this review is to highlight the relevance of psychotherapy and probiotics in the context of the microbiota-gut-brain axis in the pathophysiology and especially in the treatment of functional dyspepsia. Therefore, studies which have been conducted to investigate the role of psychotherapy and probiotics in FD and the microbiota-gut-brain axis in the pathophysiology of functional dyspepsia were examined, and the outcomes of this research summarized. There might be a link between changes in the microbiome and functional dyspepsia. Even though, specific alterations in the microbiome that may be pathognomonic in functional dyspepsia remain unclear, the use of probiotics became a viable treatment option for patients with functional dyspepsia. Since mental illness also plays an important role in the pathophysiology of functional dyspepsia, psychotherapy is a useful treatment method, with additional study results indicating that psychotherapy may also shift the microbiome in a favorable direction. Moreover, other findings suggest that probiotics can be used not only to alleviate gastrointestinal symptoms in functional dyspepsia, but also to treat or even prevent mental disorders in these patients. In summary, in this review we highlight the bi-directionality of the microbiota-gut-brain axis in the pathophysiology of functional dyspepsia. Although there are multiple treatment approaches, the burden of disease in patients with functional dyspepsia is still enormous and a definitive therapy to cure this disease does not (yet) exist. Lastly, there is a lack of studies on the impact of dysbiosis, mental health and probiotics on pathophysiology and symptomatology in functional dyspepsia which should be investigated in future studies.
