Abstract This study investigates how financial literacy and behavioral traits affect the adoption of electronic payment (ePayment) services in Japan. We construct a financial literacy index using a representative sample of 25,000 individuals from the Bank of Japan's 2019 Financial Literacy Survey. We then analyze the relationship between this index and the extensive and intensive usage of two types of payment services: electronic money (e-money) and mobile payment apps. Using an instrumental variable approach, we find that higher financial literacy is positively associated with a higher likelihood of adopting ePayment services. The empirical results suggest that individuals with higher financial literacy use payment services more frequently. We also find that risk-averse people are less likely to adopt and use ePayment services, whereas people with herd behavior tend to adopt and use ePayment services more. Our empirical results also suggest that the effects of financial literacy on the adoption and use of ePayment differ among people with different behavioral traits.

Abstract Background: Upper abdominal surgery is associated with postoperative diaphragmatic dysfunction. Whether patient-controlled epidural analgesia (PCEA) is superior to intravenous patient-controlled analgesia (IV-PCA) in preventing postoperative diaphragmatic dysfunction is still unclear in laparoscopic gastric surgery.
Methods: Sixteen patients undergoing laparoscopic gastrectomy randomly received either PCEA or IV-PCA. The primary outcomes were the change in chest wall mechanics and respiratory timing, measured by respiratory inductive plethysmography (Respitrace; Ambulatory Monitoring Inc., Ardsley, New York, United States) before and after surgery, and analyzed by a data acquisition system (PowerLab; ADInstruments, Dunedin, New Zealand). Inspiratory time (Ti), expiratory time (Te), total respiratory cycle time (Ttot), proportion of inspiratory time over total respiratory cycle time (Ti/Ttot), respiratory rate (RR), and abdominal contribution to tidal volume (AB/V
    Results: Postoperative AB/V
Conclusions: Continuous ropivacaine infusion with PCEA partially attenuated diaphragmatic dysfunction after laparoscopic gastrectomy, while pain relief by continuous intravenous administration of fentanyl could not attenuate diaphragmatic dysfunction. This suggests that PCEA might ameliorate postoperative diaphragmatic dysfunction after laparoscopic gastrectomy.

Abstract A sustainable financing strategy for SMEs should aim to enhance a low-cost collateral-free supply of loans to SMEs with good track records of repayments to banks. In this paper, we suggest two alternative financing models for SMEs that address certain borrowing constraints of SMEs. First, the model incorporates institutional mechanisms involving the government, banks, and SMEs. The strategy employs a two-pronged approach: (i) the government enhances the supply of loanable funds to banks, and (ii) identifies good SME borrowers through skills development programs and introduces them to banks. This model will reduce default risk and allow banks to offer lower-interest and collateral-free credit to SMEs, thereby improving their access to finance and performance. Second, the model could be extended to accommodate digital finance using a data-driven credit risk score of the borrowers to reduce banks’ default risks and transaction costs with or without government funds. The proposed model could resolve the moral hazard and selection bias problems. Our proposed models are based on a public-private partnership approach and therefore could solve certain borrowing constraints of SMEs. Our empirical results support the model outcomes and therefore are consistent with the predictions of our theoretical models.

Abstract Background: We recently synthesized a compound in which 5-mercapto-1-methyltetrazole (MM4) was coordinated to tiopronin monovalent (TPN-Au(I)) and reported its cytotoxic activity against human leukemia cells in vitro.
Objective: We further synthesized other heterocyclic compounds coordinated with TPN-Au(I) and assessed their cytotoxic activity against hepatocellular carcinoma HepG2 and lung cancer cell line H1299 in vitro.
Methods: Seven kinds of compounds were synthesized by introducing a five-membered heterocyclic compound into TPN-Au(I). The number of viable cells was counted by a trypan blue dye exclusion assay. Fluorescence conjugated-Annexin V and propidium iodide were used for the apoptosis analysis.
Results: Seven compounds were successfully synthesized. Among these compounds, TPN-Au(I)-MTZ (3- mercapto-1,2,4-triazole), TPN-Au(I)-MMT (2-mercapto-5-methyl-1,3,4-thiadiazole), and TPN-Au(I)-MMTT (2-mercapto-5-methylthio-1,3,4-thiadiazole) effectively suppressed the proliferation and induced apoptosis in HepG2 cells. In addition, TPN-Au(I)-MMTT and TPN-Au(I)-MMT also showed effective cytotoxicity against H1299 cells.
Conclusion: The present results showed that introduction of some five-membered heterocyclic compounds, especially MMT and MMTT, to TPN-Au(I) improved the cytotoxicity against solid cancer cells.

Abstract Background: Neurotoxicity caused by a local anesthetic after regional anesthesia is a rare but serious problem for anesthesiologists. It is difficult to diagnose neurotoxicity from anesthetics because of the large number of possible diagnoses. In this case report, careful monitoring by neurological examinations helped to diagnose local neurotoxicity caused after epidural anesthesia.
Case description: A 41-year-old pregnant woman who underwent emergency cesarean delivery under combined spinal-epidural anesthesia suffered left leg paralysis after surgery. Multiple neurological examinations (e.g., electromyography, nerve conduction study) revealed that the paralysis was induced by the neurotoxicity of ropivacaine. The neurological examinations were also useful to monitor the recovery process.
Conclusions: This is the first clinical case report that describes the diagnosis of and recovery from local anesthesia-induced neurotoxicity monitored by electromyography and nerve conduction study. Neurological disorders caused by regional anesthetics should be carefully examined and diagnosed using these neurological examinations.
