Abstract Current efforts to limit the ravages of schistosomiasis are pushing the world closer to eliminating a chronic infection that has been associated with human life in the tropics since time immemorial. This notwithstanding, the disease remains a scourge for large populations in sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America, and Southeast Asia, and the main part of this book is made up by papers dealing with its current distribution, discussing ways and means to establish and implement improved control approaches. While chemotherapy limits the symptoms caused by schistosomiasis, the number of infected people will not decrease until the parasites life cycle is interrupted. To that end, some papers focus on the intermediate snail host, which is notoriously difficult to control, while others discuss human hygiene and sanitation. The latter approach not only prevents infection through avoiding people being infected from the snail, but more importantly, also stops people infecting the snail by leaving contagious feces and urine in nature. With morbidity reduced by chemotherapy, the immediate target now is the interruption of transmission to be achieved by new tools, such as the novel chemotherapies, improved diagnostics (for humans, animals, and snails), and vaccines discussed in several of the papers. As made clear in this book, a complex infection requires new tools as well as work on many fronts, above all; however, a clear idea is needed as to how to skillfully combine the tools available and sustain implemented control activities

Abstract Researchers in many fields have discovered the advantage of using geographical information systems (GIS), spatial statistics and computer modelling, but these techniques are only sparingly applied in archaeological research. Writing 30 years ago, Castleford (1992) noted the considerable potential of GIS, but he also felt that its then atemporal structure was a serious flaw. It is clear that the study of dynamic processes suffers if past events cannot be linked to each other, or to the present, but today's powerful tools have overcome this drawback. Importantly, with location and time as key indices, hypotheses about early human population dynamics can be tested and visualized in ways that can potentially reveal hidden relationships and patterns. Abstract The Schistosomiasis Consortium for Operational Research and Evaluation (SCORE), a program focusing on schistosomiasis control in sub-Saharan Africa between 2008 and 2019, investigated ways to improve coverage and efficacy of ongoing chemotherapy programs and concluded that because of continued transmission, mass distribution of praziquantel cannot eliminate the disease without complementary control activities. Schistosomiasis Consortium for Operational Research and Evaluation's activities comprised large-scale, multicountry field studies comparing various mass drug administration strategies and some specific research avenues, such as assessment of high-sensitivity diagnostics, identification of hotspots, quantification of the role of the snail host, predictive modeling, and changes in schistosome population genetics under drug pressure. The discoveries made and the insights gained regarding cost-effective strategies for delivering preventive chemotherapy should assist policy makers to develop guidelines for the control and ultimate elimination of schistosomiasis.

Abstract Geographically weighted regression (GWR) takes a prominent role in spatial regression analysis, providing a nuanced perspective on the intricate interplay of variables within geographical landscapes (Brunsdon et al., 1998). However, it is essential to have a strong rationale for employing GWR, either as an addition to, or a complementary analysis alongside, non-spatial (global) regression models (Kiani, Mamiya et al., 2023). Moreover, the proper selection of bandwidth, weighting function or kernel types, and variable choices constitute the most critical configurations in GWR analysis (Wheeler, 2021). [...].
