Abstract Human-induced climate change is expected to increase the frequency and severity of vegetation fires. The Mediterranean region is considered particularly prone to fire episodes in summer. It is well known that pyrogenic particles are an important source of external nutrients for the marine environment, especially in oligotrophic areas. In this study, the plankton components of the sea surface layers were integrated to evaluate, for the first time, their dynamics over six months and their response to fire events in a typical coastal area of the Adriatic Sea. Concentrations of nutrients and organic compounds, together with plankton communities were significantly higher in the sea surface microlayer (SML, <1 mm thick), than in the underlying water from 1 m depth. The piconeuston community and chlorophyll a responded with extreme abundance and concentration to the most intense fire event that enriched the SML with NH

Abstract Contemporary evidence is needed to assess whether the prevalence of depression remains high among people living with HIV in the United Kingdom despite recent efforts to improve patients' mental health, and if depression is negatively associated with individuals' adherence to antiretroviral therapy. In a secondary analysis of a cross-sectional clinic-based survey of alcohol consumption and associated health behaviour among people living with HIV in London, of the 221 respondents, 106 (48%) had poor self-reported adherence to antiretroviral therapy (CASE Index) and 69 (31%) screened positive for depression (PHQ-9). Poor self-reported adherence to ART was 72% higher among participants who screened positive for depression in comparison with participants who screened negative. Respondents who were younger, unemployed, and reported problematic drug use were more likely to screen positive for depression. Screening and management of depression as a part of routine HIV care may support adherence to antiretroviral therapy.

Abstract The diagnosis of hypogonadism in people living with HIV (PLWH) remains challenging by the lack of a standardised diagnostic algorithm. Since sexual hormone-binding globulin levels are commonly increased in PLWH, guidelines recommend assessing free testosterone (FT) along with total testosterone levels. We compared different online equations available to estimate FT levels and found a good correlation amongst all algorithms. Estimating FT levels increased diagnostic accuracy of hypogonadism and therefore should be encouraged in clinical practice in PLWH with clinical symptoms of hypogonadism, even when total testosterone levels are normal.

Abstract In recent years, lipodystrophy and its related complications have become one of the major problems confronting HIV-infected patients on antiretroviral therapy. More than ten years after having been described for the first time, comprehensive knowledge of its underlying molecular basis, the natural history of body fat changes and metabolic abnormalities, and even a working definition of lipodystrophy are all still lacking. No standardized objective assessment of body fat has been incorporated into clinical practice for patient monitoring. Although a huge amount of data has been generated, no clinically proven treatment for any feature of lipodystrophy is currently available. The only intervention that has been shown to reverse lipoatrophy had been the discontinuation of thymidine analogues, although even then the results obtained are at most partial or modest. Recently published studies using uridine (NucleomaxX) and pravastatin resulted in a significant increase of subcutaneous fat. The potential for reversing lipodystrophy once it has developed is limited, but promising results in preventing it are obtained with thymidine analogue-sparing initial antiretroviral regimens. These results raise the question of whether we may be facing a definitive solution to the lipodystrophy syndrome.

Abstract Atmospheric deposition (AD) of nutrients and its impact on the sea surface requires consideration of interfacial processes within the sea surface microlayer (SML), the ocean-atmosphere boundary layer of major importance for many global biogeochemical and climate-related processes. This study comprised a comprehensive dataset, including dissolved NO₃⁻, NH₄⁺ and PO₄³⁻ in ambient aerosol particles, wet deposition and sea surface samples collected from February to July 2019 at a central Adriatic coastal site. The aerosol mean concentration of dissolved nitrogen (DIN = NO₃⁻ + NH₄⁺) and PO₄³⁻ were 48.8 ± 82.8 μmol m⁻³ and 0.8 ± 0.6 μmol m⁻³, respectively, while their total fluxes (dry + wet) ranged from 24.2 to 212.3 μmol m⁻² d⁻¹ (mean 123.2 ± 53.2 μmol m⁻² d⁻¹) and from 1.2 to 2.1 μmol m⁻² d⁻¹ (mean 1.5 ± 0.3 μmol m⁻² d⁻¹), respectively. Intensive local episodes of open biomass burning (BB) significantly increased aerosol DIN concentrations as well as DIN deposition fluxes, particularly altering the molar DIN/PO₄³⁻ ratio of atmospheric samples. The DIN temporal patterns showed high variability in the SML (range 0.2–24.6 μmol L⁻¹, mean 5.0 ± 7.1 μmol L⁻¹) in contrast to the underlying water samples (range 0.5–4.2 μmol L⁻¹, mean 1.9 ± 1.2 μmol L⁻¹), with significant increases during BB periods. Variability in abundance of heterotrophic bacteria and autotrophs in the SML along with concentrations of bulk dissolved and particulate organic carbon as well as dissolved and particulate lipids and carbohydrates, gel particles and surfactants followed DIN enhancements with a two-week delay. This study showed that AD can affect the short-term scale enrichments of organic matter in the SML, especially when accompanied by BB emissions typical of the overall Mediterranean coastal environment. This could have strong implications for global air-sea exchange processes, including those of climate relevant gases, mediated by the SML.

Abstract Background: The data on polyetheretherketone (PEEK) influence on the peri-implant soft tissues in clinical settings are deficient. The aims of this pilot study were to analyze and compare soft tissues' response to PEEK and titanium (Ti) healing abutments (HA) by means of histological and immunohistochemical analyses.
Methods: A total of 22 implants with PEEK or Ti HA were placed in 11 patients, applying the "split-mouth" study design. Three months later, soft tissue specimens were harvested from 20 implants for histology in order to qualitatively detect the inflammatory cells' presence, to semi-qualitatively analyze the inflammation intensity and to assess the inflammatory responses type by immunohistochemical analysis using LCA, CD3, CD20 and CD68 antibodies.
Results: Epithelial infiltrate followed by an intensive inflammation in sub-epithelium was observed in 100% around PEEK HA. A number of LCA+ and CD 68+ cells was significantly higher in PEEK comparing to Ti group (p = 0.001 and p = 0.020, respectively), while CD 20+ and CD3+ counted cells were found in a significantly higher amount in Ti than in PEEK group (p = 0.006 and p = 0.010, respectively).
Conclusion: PEEK HA seems to evoke the more intense tissue inflammatory response demonstrated predominantly by histocytes' and plasmacytes' activation, while Ti HA triggers the inflammatory reaction of lower intensity, dominantly mediated by B-cells.
Trial registration: The study registered at ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT04436939).
