Abstract Acinetobacter baumannii is an opportunistic pathogen that is responsible for nosocomial infections. Imipenem and colistin are drugs that are commonly used to treat severe infections caused by A. baumannii, such as sepsis, ventilator-associated pneumonia, and bacteremia. However, some strains of A. baumannii have become resistant to these drugs, which is a concern for public health. Biofilms produced by A. baumannii increase their resistance to antibiotics and the cells within the inner layers of biofilm are exposed to sub-inhibitory concentrations (sub-MICs) of antibiotics. There is limited information available regarding how the genes of A. baumannii are linked to biofilm formation when the bacteria are exposed to sub-MICs of imipenem and colistin. Thus, this study's objective was to explore this relationship by examining the genes involved in biofilm formation in A. baumannii when exposed to low levels of imipenem and colistin. The study found that exposing an isolate of A. baumannii to low levels of these drugs caused changes in their drug susceptibility pattern. The relative gene expression profiles of the biofilm-associated genes exhibited a change in their expression profile during short-term and long-term exposure. This study highlights the potential consequences of overuse and misuse of antibiotics, which can help bacteria become resistant to these drugs.

Abstract The rise of machine learning (ML) is accompanied by several high-profile cases that have stressed the need for fairness, accountability, explainability and trust in ML systems. The existing literature has largely focused on fully automated ML approaches that try to optimize for some performance metric. However, human-centric measures like fairness, trust, explainability, etc. are subjective in nature, context-dependent, and might not correlate with conventional performance metrics. To deal with these challenges, we explore a human-centered AI approach that empowers people by providing more transparency and human control. In this dissertation, we present 5 research projects that aim to enhance explainability and fairness in classification systems and word embeddings. The first project explores the utility/downsides of introducing local model explanations as interfaces for machine teachers (crowd workers). Our study found that adding explanations supports trust calibration for the resulting ML model and enables rich forms of teaching feedback. The second project presents D-BIAS, a causality-based human-in-the-loop visual tool for identifying and mitigating social biases in tabular datasets. Apart from fairness, we found that our tool also enhances trust and accountability. The third project presents WordBias, a visual interactive tool that helps audit pre-trained static word embeddings for biases against groups, such as females, or subgroups, such as Black Muslim females. The fourth project presents DramatVis Personae, a visual analytics tool that helps identify social biases in creative writing. Finally, the last project presents an empirical study aimed at understanding the cumulative impact of multiple fairness-enhancing interventions at different stages of the ML pipeline on fairness, utility and different population groups. We conclude by discussing some of the future directions.

Abstract A 50-year-old female patient presenting with joint pains, Raynaud's phenomenon, epistaxis, and telangiectasias was posed with a diagnostic conundrum, i.e., whether to accept the diagnosis of mixed connective tissue disease (MCTD), for which she fulfilled all the criteria, or test for another probable disease, namely hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT), even though only some clinical features were present and all diagnostic criteria were not satisfied. Taking the patient's onset of epistaxis as an important clue, the patient was counseled for genetic testing for HHT, which was positive. Treatment for both MCTD and HHT is underway, and appropriate surveillance is planned for the patient.

Abstract We owe it to the women neurosurgeons for paving the way to a more gender-inclusive world of medicine. Their dedication and sacrifices have led them and their followers to scale unimaginable heights in terms of administrative positions, leadership, and academics. In today's scenario, it is safe to say that society has progressed considerably. Past years have seen an uprise in the number of females enrolling in a medical degree programme however, this proportion is highly distorted when it comes to specialties such as Neurosurgery. This disparity seems to be evolving and leveling out in all specialties, as more and more women are stepping out of their comfort zone and challenging the established standards of the society. It is with the collective efforts of all stakeholders and women that we see more women not only choosing such specialties which were previously uncharted terrain, but also leading organizations globally and excelling on the administrative and academic fronts. Veteran female surgeons have revolutionized neurosurgery and its subspecialties in unimaginable ways and the present as well as the future generation neurosurgeons continue to take inspiration from them and follow their footsteps. This paper has put together the contributions of female neurosurgeons in various subspecialties of neurosurgery as well as giving an account of the leadership and administrative positions served by women. We also shed light on the role of women as an academician and a researcher.

Abstract Studies have reported challenges of debonding of dental zirconia crowns to from luting cement and prepared teeth. The aim of the study was to explore the application of dental glazing systems for enhancing the bonding of zirconia dental ceramics to luting resin cement. Commercial glaze powder and liquid (Vita Akzent) and experimental mica-based glaze powders were used for the study. X-ray diffraction analysis of the glaze powders (XRD) and Fourier Transform InfraRed Spectroscopy (FTIR) was done on the glaze liquid. Sandblasted sintered dental zirconia (Katana, Noritake) were the control samples. Glazed zirconia samples were coated with commercial glaze and experimental glaze powders which were further etched with 5% hydrofluoric acid. Shear bond strengths of sandblasted and glazed zirconia samples to resin composites were evaluated. XRD of commercial and experimental glaze powders revealed a broad peak confirming the amorphous nature of glass and FTIR analysis of the glaze liquid revealed symmetrical stretching (CH

Abstract Introduction: The most frequent and dangerous gastrointestinal emergency in newborns is Necrotising Enterocolitis (NEC). A novel and promising strategy for preventing NEC is enterally given probiotics. Aim: To evaluate the efficacy of probiotics in preterm neonates in the prevention of NEC and to assess the time of achievement of full feeds and duration of Intensive Care Unit (ICU) stay. Materials and Methods: The present study was a parallel design single-centre randomised controlled trial, conducted in Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), Department of Paediatrics, Kempegowda Institute of Medical Sciences, Bangalore, Karnataka, India, from November 2018 to April 2020. Total of 130 newborns were included after inclusion and exclusion criteria and were randomised into two groups: that is probiotic (group I, n=61) and non probiotic (group II, n=69) groups. The probiotic group was given probiotics with breastmilk and non probiotic group were given only breastmilk. Probiotic (Bifidobacterium breve M16V) 0.5 g was mixed with breastmilk and given twice daily till full feeds were reached. All neonates were followed-up on daily basis for the appearance of features of NEC. Other parameters like time of achievement of full feeds and duration of ICU stay were compared between the two groups. Descriptive and inferential statistical analysis was carried out in the present study. Results: Out of total sample, majority of babies belonged to the gestational age group of 30-33 weeks i.e., 30 (49.2%) in group I and 30 (43.5%) in group II. There were 29 (47.5%) females and 32 (52.5%) males in group I and, 32 (46.4%) females and 37 (53.6%) males in group II. There was a significant reduction of incidence of NEC (p-value=0.024) and earlier achievement of full feeds in the probiotic group (p-value=0.003) when compared to non probiotic group. The mean duration of ICU stay compared between the two groups was not statistically significant (p-value=0.366). Conclusion: Supplementation of probiotics to the preterm Low Birth Weight (LBW) ...
