Abstract At the level of sociological practice a three-sided debate occurs in American sociology between the rationalist tradition, in which the goal is the better understanding of society; the emancipatory tradition, in which the goal is improvement of society; and the skeptical tradition, which argues that we cannot know if either our knowledge or our norms are correct, and therefore it is not possible to expect progress in either. Each of these strands runs into difficulties: for the rationalist tradition, an inability to cumulate knowledge; for the emancipatory tradition, a difficulty in grounding the norms that would determine what counts as emancipation if norms are socially constructed; and for the skeptical tradition, inability to accept the logical conclusion of the argument, which is inaction even in the face of extreme injustice. The author shows that when pressed on these points, each tradition moves in the direction of pragmatism understood as problem solving, and that the practice of problem solving offers resolutions to these dilemmas.

Abstract Objective: The purpose of the systematic review and meta-analysis was to evaluate implant failure rates and their association with guided and free-hand implant placement techniques.
Materials and methods: A literature search was conducted across PubMed, Medline via Ovid, Cochrane database, and Google Scholar. The search was completed in September 2020. Series of meta-analyses were conducted to compare implant failure rates with guided and free-hand techniques.
Results: A total of 3387 articles were identified from the electronic search. After applying the inclusion criteria, eight articles were selected for qualitative assessment and four for quantitative synthesis (meta-analysis). The included studies had a risk ratio of 0.29 (95% CI: 0.15, 0.58), P < 0.001 for the use of guided implant placement. Implant failure rates were affected by the different placement techniques indicated by the test for overall effect (Z = 3.53, P = 0.0004). The incidence of implant failure in guided surgery versus free-hand surgery was found to be 2.25% and 6.42%, respectively.
Conclusion: Both guided and free-hand implant placement techniques resulted in a high implant survival rate. However, implant failure rates were almost three times higher in the free-hand implant placement category. A guided implant placement approach is recommended for a successful outcome.

Abstract Background: Chronic periodontitis is the most common dental disease reported globally as well as in India. Periodontal pathogens are usually seen in samples of gingival tissues, crevicular blood, GCF (gingival crevicular fluid), and dental plaque. Apart from the conventional mechanical treatment, laser disinfection is a recent advancement that change shows greater efficacy in reducing the disease progression and changing the bacterial flora.
Aim: The present study aimed to assess the Immediate response of diode laser on the microbial load in subjects with chronic Periodontitis as assessed in saliva, crevicular blood, and GCF (gingival crevicular fluid) samples.
Materials and methods: The study recruited 90 subjects with chronic periodontitis. For split-mouth fashion, the mouth, of each participant was divided into two halves and was divided into two groups randomly. Group I (test group) subjects underwent laser disinfection (970 ± 15 nm). Group II subjects served as controls and underwent saline irrigation. For all participants, crevicular blood, saliva, and GCF samples were collected before and immediately following disinfection for microbial analysis.
Results: Microbial load reduction was seen in both groups following treatment. However, a significantly higher reduction was seen in the test group with laser disinfection. Compared to the crevicular blood sample, a greater reduction was seen in saliva and GCF samples.
Conclusion: The present study concludes that Diode Laser (970 ± 15 nm) application shows an immediate reduction of the bacterial load in subjects with chronic periodontitis.

Abstract DSPP is known to be important in the formation of dentin. In DSPP's absence, a severely hypomineralized dentin is formed, in a condition known as dentinogenesis imperfecta (DGI). DSPP has recently been found in several different tissues, including the mandibular condylar cartilage and craniofacial skeleton. However, there is limited literature on the role of DSPP in these tissues. Therefore, the objective of the present study was to investigate the role of DSPP in craniofacial development. Two mice strains, DSPP knockout and C57BL/6J wild type, were compared at 1, 3, and 6-months of age. Skulls and condyles were investigated through morphological and histological analyses. Cell culture was also conducted to investigate the potential effects of DSPP absence in osteoblasts from the calvaria. Mineralization defects were noticed in the structures of skulls and MCC, with the most significant impact at 1 month of age.

Abstract: ... of California, Los Angeles Santa Monica Hospital, both academic medical centers, and the Harbor-University ...

Abstract Purpose: Characterize clinical and socioeconomic factors that impact follow-up to complete retinal vascularization and subsequent pediatric ophthalmology follow-up in neonates with retinopathy of prematurity.
Methods: Medical records of 402 neonates diagnosed with retinopathy of prematurity from neonatal intensive care units at the University of California, Los Angeles Mattel Children's Hospital and the University of California, Los Angeles Santa Monica Hospital, both academic medical centers, and the Harbor-University of California, Los Angeles Medical Center, a safety-net county hospital, were reviewed. Primary study outcomes were the rate of follow-up to complete retinal vascularization and adequate pediatric ophthalmology follow-up. Secondary outcome was the rate of nonretinal ocular comorbidity.
Results: In whole-cohort analysis, 93.6% of neonates were followed to complete retinal vascularization, and 53.5% had adequate pediatric ophthalmology follow-up. Public insurance was associated with lower rates of pediatric ophthalmology follow-up (Odds ratio 0.66, 95% confidence interval 0.45-0.98, P = 0.04). Participants screened at the academic medical center had lower rates of pediatric ophthalmology follow-up compared with the safety-net county hospital (50.7% vs. 63.5%, P = 0.034). In subgroup analysis, academic medical center participants with public insurance were less likely to have pediatric ophthalmology follow-up than safety-net county hospital participants with public insurance (36.5% vs. 63.8%, P < 0.001) or those with private insurance at the academic medical center (36.5% vs. 59.2%, P< 0.001).
Conclusion: This study identified high follow-up rates to complete retinal vascularization, lower pediatric ophthalmology follow-up rates, and nonretinal ocular comorbidity at all hospitals. Insurance status relative to hospital type was identified as a risk factor for loss to follow-up. This demonstrates a need to further study health care disparities in retinopathy of prematurity infants.

Abstract Aim: To compare the visual acuity (VA), comfort, and patient preference in a soft toric contact lens (TCL) versus soft spherical contact lens (SCL) in low astigmatic subjects during the contact lens (CL) trial.
Methods: This subject-masked, block randomized, 2×2 crossover study recruited 40 neophyte subjects (80 eyes) aged 18 to 33y with astigmatism in the range of 0.75-1.25 D with or without spherical power from -6.00 D to +6.00 D. The participants were scheduled for two days CL trial and were fitted with the best-fit SCL and TCL. After 4h of wear, they were assessed objectively for high contrast VA and subjective vision, comfort, and preference.
Results: The responses of 36 subjects (response rate 90%) with a mean age of 23.02±2.97y (range 18 to 33y) were analyzed. One-line improvement of monocular VA in the logMAR chart was reported to TCL as compared to SCL (-0.044±0.06
Conclusion: The findings suggest that VA and comfort are better with TCL as compared to SCL which is only observed if the patient was offered both offering SCL with spherical equivalent power alone as the first option can mislead the practitioner; TCL trial should be the first choice of the lens in low-to-moderate astigmatism.
