Abstract This work reports on the semiconducting properties of TiO₂ (rutile) during cooling from 1273 K to room temperature in the gas phase of controlled oxygen activity. The studies are based on simultaneous in situ monitoring of electrical conductivity and thermoelectric power. The changes in semiconducting properties during cooling are preferentially related to surface properties, and they depend on oxygen activity during prior annealing and the cooling procedure. We show that annealing in strongly oxidizing conditions, at p(O₂) = 100 kPa, results in the imposition of p-type properties, and cooling results in an enhancement of p-type properties. However, annealing at 1273 K in mildly oxidizing conditions, at p(O₂) = 10 Pa, results in the imposition of n-type properties and subsequent cooling results in the n-p transition at 950 K. The observed surprising shift toward p-type properties during cooling is considered in terms of preferential ionization of the predominant acceptor-type ionic defects, titanium vacancies. TiO₂ reduced in the argon–hydrogen mixture exhibits n-type semiconducting properties during annealing at 1273 K and subsequent cooling. The latter n-type behavior is induced by decreased oxygen activity leading to the formation of intrinsic donor-type ionic defects (oxygen vacancies and titanium interstitials) and the formation of donor-type hydrogen-related extrinsic defects.

Abstract Climate change scenarios predict more frequent and intense drought periods for 2071–2100 in the most important and intensively used agricultural region of Austria, the Marchfeld. Current and predicted lower precipitation scenarios were simulated at a lysimeter station for 9 years. Plant biomass, nitrogen (N) and carbon (C) content, and δ13C and δ15N values of plant compartments were monitored in years 7–9. Aboveground biomass of cereals and grain yield decreased under the predicted scenario, while the quality of grain (% N) was unaffected. Weed and catch crops grown in winter were not affected or were even positively affected, possibly due to the accumulation of nutrients in the soil following the lower plant uptake in summer. Accordingly, low plant δ15N values were mainly attributed to the presence of higher proportion of mineral fertilizer in the predicted precipitation scenario. As expected, water stress significantly increased δ13C values in plants grown over summer, while this was not seen for plants growing over winter. Fertile agricultural soil might ameliorate but cannot outbalance the negative impact of more frequent and intense drought periods.

Abstract The identification of crucial key factors in the homogenously catalyzed synthesis of N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) from carbon dioxide with an integrated catalyst recycling is demonstrated in this work. All investigations were performed in a biphasic solvent system consisting of an aqueous phase and an aliphatic alcohol in order to evaluate the reaction performance with an integrated catalyst recycling. While no mass transfer limitations between both liquid phases could be identified, the main rate limiting factor for the carbon dioxide conversion could be located in the amine to carbon dioxide ratio. A conventional dosage of CO2 via pressurization led to high CO2 loadings that resulted in a low basicity and thus in poor yields up to 34% after 5 h. By adding carbon dioxide via reactive absorption into an aqueous amine phase a defined amount could be applied and the yield for the formamide increased up to 81%.

Abstract Titanium dioxide, TiO₂, is commonly considered as an n-type semiconductor. The present work shows that TiO₂ exhibits both n- and p-type semiconducting properties. It is shown that p-type properties may be imposed by either increasing of oxygen activity or incorporation of acceptor-type ions, such as chromium. This work reports the n–p transition for both pure and Cr-doped TiO₂ (0.05 at % Cr) single crystals at elevated temperatures (1023–1323 K) in the gas phase of controlled oxygen activity. The n–p transition was determined by the measurements of thermoelectric power as a function of oxygen activity in the range 10 to 10⁵ Pa. It is shown that the n–p transition line for Cr-doped TiO₂ exhibits a sharp change at 1173 K that is related to the conversion in chromium oxidation state from trivalent below 1173 K to six-valent above. This effect, which is reflective of a dual mechanism of chromium incorporation into the rutile structure of TiO₂, can be used for imposition of desired semiconducting properties that are needed for specific applications, such as solar-to-chemical energy conversion.

Abstract Background: Disorders/differences of sex development (DSD) comprise a heterogeneous group of inborn conditions where the individual's sex chromosomes, gonads, and/or anatomical sex are discordant. Since the Chicago Consensus Conference in 2005, multidisciplinary care has been implemented in specialised paediatric tertiary care centres and clinical practice has substantially changed towards a more holistic approach.
Summary: Psychological support has become a key factor in the management of DSD. After paediatric care, one of the main challenges is the transition of patients to expert care in adulthood. Patients frequently experience difficulties in accessing specialised medical care in adulthood, resulting in loss to follow-up affecting the patients' physical and psychological health as well as quality of life. Clinical features and long-term outcomes are highly variable in most DSD conditions. Although medical care has improved, morbidity and mortality are increased in all conditions. A particular challenge in the care of DSD patients in adulthood is optimisation of fertility potential. Ideally, this is addressed already in adolescence and requires close interaction of not only paediatricians and adult endocrinologists but also urologists, andrologists or gynaecologists, and psychologists.
Key messages: This review addresses issues relating to transition of DSD care from the paediatric to adult care as well as health-related challenges in adulthood in DSD.

Abstract Europe experienced unprecedented droughts during the years 2018, 2019, and 2020. In the course of climate change, it is expected that such drought events will occur more frequently so that agriculture needs to adapt to droughts. Hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) has been promoted as an adaptation to water limited conditions. Hemp delivers biomass as a raw material to a variety of different value chains, such as fibers and textiles, house construction, chemicals, or food applications. Hemp develops a deep root system, which enables it to cover its water demand even during longer dry periods. This may lead to an over exploitation of soil moisture of deeper soil layers or of the groundwater in the long-term. Against this background, this study assessed the water consumption of hemp in Northeastern Germany (region Uckermark) during the growing seasons 2018–2022. The Penman Monteith approach was used to calculate the water consumption, whereby the remote sensing based S-SEBI approach was employed, with Landsat satellite images as input data, to feed crop coefficients into those calculations. The water consumption of hemp ranged from 310 to 407 mm over the growing seasons 2018–2022, while stem yields were 9 t ha-1 (except 2018 with 7.8 t ha-1). This water consumption did exceed the precipitation during the growing seasons, but did not exceed the total precipitation of the given hydrological years so that growing hemp does not constitute an over-exploitation of water. Instead, hemp taps the soil moisture that has infiltrated into the soil during autumn and winter. This makes hemp a crop well suited for an adaptation to a drier, hotter, and more variable climate.

Abstract Cocondensation of 2,3,5,6-tetramethyl-pyrazine with vanadium atoms affords [2,3,5,6-(CH₃)₄-η⁶-1,4-C4N₂]₂V (6) which has been studied by X-ray crystallography, EPR-spectro-scopy and cyclic voltammetry. As shown by unequal metal ring-atom distances (V—C = 219.6, V—N = 210.9 pm) the ligand in 6 is folded along the NN axis (dihedral angle 13.6°). The conformation adopted by the cyclic ligands in the crystal has a torsional angle of 44.2° which comes close to the angle of 45° expected for maximum back-bonding, the filled vanadium orbitals 3 dₓ₂₋ᵧ₂and 3 dₓy interacting separately with unoccupied b₃ᵤ(π*) orbitals of the individual pyrazine rings. The hyperfine coupling constant a(⁵¹V) = 4.45 mT attests to comparatively small spin density at the metal nucleus. It is proposed, that substantial transfer of spin density is effected by V 3dz²→ag(σⁿ⁺) overlap, the latter function representing the in-phase combination of the nitrogen “lone pair” orbitals. Contrary to bis(η⁶-phosphinine)vanadium 8, for the pyrazine complex 6 only the anion 6⁻ is formed reversibly in cyclovoltammetry, oxidation to 6⁺ being irreversible. However, in common with 8, the redox potentials for 6 show pronounced anodic shifts. Attempts towards η⁶-coordination of 2,4,6-trimethyl-1,3,5-triazine failed. Apparently, the 1:1 ratio of CH₃/N is insufficient to furnish the triazine ring with the appropriate combination of π-donor and δ-acceptor properties essential for synergetic bond formation.

Abstract: ... simple method of sample preparation for inorganic N analysis of KCl extracts using OES. ...

Abstract A diffusion method for the preparation and measurement of 15N abundance of ammonium and nitrate in KCl extracts of soil using optical emission spectrometry (OES) was compared with conventional continuous flow isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS). There were highly significant correlations between the values obtained by using OES and IRMS. The 99% confidence interval of the intercept included the value 0 and the 99% confidence interval of the slope included the value 1 for both nitrate and ammonium measurements, suggesting that the results from the two methods did not differ significantly. In another experiment, 15N values of nitrate and ammonium from soil extracts prepared by using the standard distillation procedures for OES were compared against the microdiffusion preparation method. Again, there was a highly significant correlation between the values: the 95% confidence interval of the intercept included the value 0, and the 95% confidence interval of the slope included the value 1, again suggesting that the two methods did not differ significantly. It was concluded that the diffusion technique is an appropriate and simple method of sample preparation for inorganic N analysis of KCl extracts using OES.

Title translation Modified-release hydrocortisone for glucocorticoid deficiency.
Abstract Background: The central circadian pacemaker in the suprachiasmatic nucleus and interaction of clock genes with the hypothalamus pituitary adrenal axis are responsible for very distinct cortisol concentrations. Unphysiologically high doses of glucocorticoids that do not follow the circadian rhythm lead to increased rates of morbidity, mortality and reduced quality of life.
Objectives: Does a switch to modified-release hydrocortisone in multimorbid elderly patients offer benefits compared to a conventional therapy regime?
Methods: Evaluation, analysis and discussion of statistics, recent research results and expert advice.
Results: Overdosage and unphysiological timing of cortisol administration result in higher incidences of obesity, hypertension, hyperglycemia, coronary heart disease and cardiac events. Body weight, body mass index and HbA1c decline with Plenadren® (Shire Pharmaceuticals Ireland Limited, Dublin, Ireland) treatment compared to conventional therapy. CD16+ natural killer cells and natural killer cytotoxycity are reduced, and the incidence of respiratory-tract infections is increased, with conventional therapy compared to Plenadren®. Cortisol influences sleep pattern and sleep quality by its circadian secretion.
Conclusion: Novel modified-release hydrocortisone preparations offer diverse benefits with regard to their effect on metabolism, cardiovascular risk, immunity and sleep, which might be beneficial in particular in multimorbid elderly.
