Abstract: ... can be confusing.: Patient concerns: A 67-year-old woman taking xiang-tian-guo for 6 months was ... follow-up.: Lessons: We must to be vigilant about the safety of xiang-tian-guo as a herbal medicine ...

Abstract Rationale: Drug-induced liver injury (DILI) has a relatively low incidence, whereas the incidence of herb-induced liver injury (HILI) is still under investigation. As a special type of DILI, the diagnosis of drug-induced autoimmune-like hepatitis presents a persistent challenge, because this condition has partial characteristics of both DILI and autoimmune hepatitis (AIH), such as a certain history of medication use and histology that similar is to AIH. Thus, the differential diagnosis between DILI and AIH can be confusing.
Patient concerns: A 67-year-old woman taking xiang-tian-guo for 6 months was admitted to our hospital with a complaint of experiencing jaundice for 2 weeks.
Diagnosis: A liver biopsy exhibited interface inflammation, foam cells, and "rosette" -like hepatocytes. She was diagnosed with herb-induced liver injury (hepatocellular and acute), a RUCAM score of 7 (probable), a severity for grade 4 liver injury, and accompanied autoimmune-like changes.
Interventions: The patient was instructed to cease the administration of suspicious drugs. The patient also received liver protection and albumin transfusion.
Outcomes: After 25 days of hospitalization, the patients aminotransferase levels returned to normal. No recurrence was observed after the administration of the treatments and a close follow-up.
Lessons: We must to be vigilant about the safety of xiang-tian-guo as a herbal medicine. When faced with the difficulty of distinguishing between AIH and DILI, long-term follow-up observations for recurrence can aid clinicians in making a judgment.

Abstract This study uses the morphology of fault scarps to study the paleoseismic history of the Dushanzi Reverse Fault (DRF) in the northern Tian Shan region, China. Using high-resolution LiDAR DEMs to create a large number of scarp profiles, we detected slope breaks in the fault scarp morphology to quantify the number of paleoearthquakes that occurred on the scarps and obtained the along-strike scarp height distribution to determine the cumulative and single-event vertical displacements. Our results revealed four surface-rupturing events with similar co-seismic vertical displacements of ~1.4 m via the statistical analysis of displacement datasets and slope breaks, which were in agreement with the findings from paleoseismic trenching. We then assessed the paleomagnitudes using the empirical scaling relationships between moment magnitude and rupture parameters and the recurrence interval for surface-rupturing events using the formation ages of the displaced terrace surfaces. The results indicate that the possible magnitudes range from Mw 6.5 to 6.7, even reaching Mw ~7.2 in the case of a multi-fault rupture of the entire anticline-fault belt, with an average recurrence interval of ~2.4–3.0 ka. This study also demonstrates the importance of using high-resolution topographic data in paleoseismic investigations, which enables the determination of fine-scale tectono-geomorphic interpretations and detailed offset measurements over large regions along the fault.

Abstract Background: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a complex hormonal disorder and one of the most common reproductive endocrinology abnormalities in women. Recently, many studies have been conducted assessing Chinese herbal medicine as an alternative treatment for women with PCOS, it is, therefore, worthwhile to analyze and observe the curative effects of traditional Chinese medicine treatment in PCOS.
Objective: To evaluate the efficacy of the Chinese patent medicine Tian Gui Capsule, in women with PCOS and compare its effects with metformin and ethinyl estradiol plus cyproterone acetate (Diane-35).
Design, setting, participants and intervention: A total of 47 PCOS outpatients from the Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital of Fudan University were randomly divided into 3 groups. Patients in group A (n=19) were given Tian Gui Capsule, patients in group B (n=17) were given metformin, and patients in group C (n=11) were given Diane-35. The 3 groups of patients were treated for 3 months.
Main outcome measures: Serum testosterone (T), sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) and dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEA-S) levels, free androgen index (FAI), fasting blood glucose (FPG), fasting insulin (FINS), homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), insulin sensitive index (ISI) and left and right ovary volumes of the 3 groups were evaluated before and after treatment .
Results: After 3 months of treatment, when compared with before treatment data, group A patients showed decreased serum T and SHBG levels, FAI, FINS, and left and right ovary volumes (P<0.05), and increased serum DHEA-S (P<0.05), while the FPG level showed no significant change. Although the level of serum T and FINS among the 3 groups after the treatment were similar, group A demonstrated better results than group B in reducing the FAI and increasing the serum SHBG, but less significant results than group C besides, group B was the only group showed improved insulin sensitivity. Although the level of FPG of the 3 groups after treatment were similar, group C had the most increased FPG.
Conclusion: The effects of Tian Gui Capsule on hyperandrogenism are not as significant as Diane-35, but more effective than metformin. The effects of Tian Gui Capsule on hyperinsulinemia are not as significant as metformin but better than Diane-35. Tian Gui Capsule treats PCOS by regulating ovarian functions and reducing blood insulin level without inhibiting the function of the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis. Further studies with larger sample size are needed to confirm the above results.

Abstract Deposition of atmospheric dust was measured in the snow on Glacier No.1 at the headwater of Urumqi River in eastern Tian Shan, central Asia. An analysis of seasonal change of concentration of dust particles in the snow cover suggests that number concentration of dust particle is significantly high from April to June (439 x 10(3)/mL), which may be caused by Asian dust storm in spring. The comparison of mass-size distribution of dust particles between April to August shows an obvious change trend. The distribution of particles changes from single model (3-21 microm) in non-dust period before April, to bio-model (3-21 microm and 20-80 microm) during Asian dust period, and to single model (3-21 microm) after June in non-dust period again. Ca2+ concentration in the snow is also very high from April to June, while NH4+ and SO4(2-), as water-soluble constituents the concentration change is different from each other. Backward trajectory was also employed to examine the transport process of air mass in this region.

Abstract Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic nonspecific inflammatory disease of the gastrointestinal tract, and its pathogenesis has not been fully understood. Extensive dysregulation of the intestinal mucosal immune system is critical in the development and progression of IBD. T helper (Th) 17 cells have the characteristics of plasticity. They can transdifferentiate into subpopulations with different functions in response to different factors in the surrounding environment, thus taking on different roles in regulating the intestinal immune responses. In this review, we will focus on the plasticity of Th17 cells as well as the function of Th17 cells and their related cytokines in IBD. We will summarize their pathogenic and protective roles in IBD under different conditions, respectively, hoping to further deepen the understanding of the pathological mechanisms underlying IBD and provide insights for future treatment.

Abstract Protein glycosylation is one of the most common and important post-translational modifications of proteins involved in regulating glycoprotein functions. The chemoenzymatic glycan labeling strategy allows rapid, efficient, and selective interrogation of glycoproteins. Glycoproteomics identifies protein glycosylation events at a large scale, providing information such as peptide sequences, glycan structures, and glycosylated sites. This review discusses the recent development of chemoenzymatic labeling strategies for glycoprotein analysis, mainly including glycoprotein and glycosite profiling. Furthermore, we highlight the chemoenzymatic enrichment approaches in mass spectrometry analysis for three classes of glycan modifications, including N-glycosylation, O-GlcNAcylation, and mucin-type O-glycosylation. Finally, we highlight the emerging trends in new tools and cutting-edge technologies available for glycoproteomic research.
