Abstract Total of 172 total suspended particulate (TSP) samples and its chemical compositions were collected and analyzed from January to December 2010 in Pengjia Yu Island, an open region in East China Sea (ECS). Despite the predominance of sea-salt major ions (Na⁺, Cl⁻), the presence of non-sea-salt SO₄²⁻ (nss-SO₄²⁻) and NO₃⁻ as well as combustion-derived trace metals clearly establishes the impact of anthropogenic sources over ECS. The annual contributions of coal, heavy-fuel oil and traffic to the measured chemical species were 21.0 %, 15.0 % and 15.5 %, respectively. Especially in spring, the contributions of crustal minerals to measured chemical species during dust period (33.6 %) were higher than that (13.2 %) during non-dust period. The calculated annual average dry deposition fluxes for trace metals and total inorganic nitrogen were 246.1 ± 345.8 μg/m²/d and 2950.4 ± 2245.0 μg/m²/d, suggesting that atmospheric deposition is an important source of nutrient elements for the south of ECS.

Abstract Background: The main symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease GERD are heartburn and acid regurgitation. Proton-pump inhibitors (PPI) are considered to be safe and effective for the treatment of GERD. In traditional Chinese medicine, wu chu yu tang (WCYT) is used to treat nausea after eating, vomiting, and diarrhea.
Purpose: We designed a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial to evaluate the therapeutic effect of WCYT on GERD using omeprazole as a PPI for the positive control.
Methods: Ninety patients with GERD were randomly assigned to the 1) control group (CG), who received an oral administration of omeprazole (20 mg) once per day and given WCYT placebo (3.0 g) three times per day for 4 weeks continuously; or the 2) treatment group (TG), who received oral administration of omeprazole (20 mg) placebo once per day and WCYT (3.0 g) three times per day for 4 weeks continuously.
Results: Seventy-seven patients (37 in CG, 40 in TG) completed the trial. Both Reflux Disease Questionnaire (RDQ) and Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease Questionnaire (GERDQ) scores was less in the second assessment (V2) and in the third assessment (V3) than those in V1 (first assessment; baseline) in the CG and TG groups (all p < 0.001); the score difference of both RDQ and GERDQ between V2 and V1 was similar between CG and TG (p = 1.00, p = 0.54, respectively). The score difference of both RDQ and GERD between V3 and V1 was less in the CG group than those of the TG group (both p = 0.004).
Conclusion: WCYT has an effect similar to omeprazole for GERD treatment. Furthermore, this effect resulting from WCYT appeared to be maintained for a longer period of time than did that of omeprazole. A study with a larger sample size and longer study period is needed to corroborate our findings.

Abstract The morphology of first stage zoea larvae of three pandalid shrimps Plesionika crosnieri Chan Yu, 1991, P. ortmanni Doflein, 1902, and P. semilaevis Bate, 1888 are described for the first time from larvae obtained in laboratory culture. The zoea I is compared amongst those species of the genus Plesionika with larval morphology known. It is found that the length of the rostrum, the number of anteroventral denticles on the carapace, presence of exopodal setae in the maxillule, and setation pattern of the peduncle of antennule, endopod of antenna, and coxa/basis of maxillipeds are useful characters in distinguishing these larvae.

Abstract End-stage cancer patients frequently suffer from idiopathic sweating of unknown cause. This study was to evaluate the effect (primary endpoint) of modified Yu Ping Feng San on idiopathic sweating and adverse reactions (secondary endpoint). Thirty two end-stage cancer patients receiving hospice care, with exclusion criteria including sweating due to known causes and taking drugs which may affect the sweating threshold were enrolled. Patients received modified Yu Ping Feng San for 10 consecutive days. The quantitative measurement of sweating showed 26 patients (81.3%) had complete remission of sweating, and the average time required to reach 50% reduction was 4.6 days. The visual analog scale (VAS) sweating score estimated by patients and care-givers showed that the mean reductions were 8.4 and 9.1 points, respectively. An increase in appetite was experienced by 65.6% of patients, after administration of modified Yu Ping Feng San. The most prevalent treatment-related complications were nausea (15.6%), diarrhea (9.3%) and allergy (3.1%) without severity greater than grade 2, and these were reversible after cessation of treatment. These results suggest that modified Yu Ping Feng San is a safe and effective treatment for idiopathic sweating of unknown cause in end-stage cancer patients.

High Alt. Med Biol. 10:77-82, 2009.-Medical problems requiring mountain rescue in densely populated and low-latitude locations like Taiwan have rarely been studied or discussed. The purpose of this research was to examine mountain-rescue operations that occurred in Yu-Shan National Park Taiwan from 1985 to 2007. Of 186 mountain-rescue operations, 128 involved medical problems (illnesses or injuries). Of the medical problems, 62% involved trauma and 41% involved illness. Ninety-nine ground rescues, 14 helicopter rescues, 38 combination ground and helicopter rescues, and 20 rescues using unclear methods were conducted, and the remaining 15 rescue operations did not involve visitors. In the 186 rescue operations, 330 visitors were rescued, 240 of them survived, 66 were dead, and 24 had an unclear outcome. Factors that affected the type of injury or the probability of survival included the activity, altitude, composition of the visitor group, weather, and occurrence of natural disasters. Mountain-rescue operations in which both ground and helicopter rescue were utilized were more successful. Our retrospective findings indicate that wilderness emergency services should have the capability of performing rescues in rugged terrain and be flexible in their approach to any situation arising in mountainous regions; proper training of onboard helicopter medical personnel is also necessary. In conclusion, we recommend setting up a standard system for reporting mountain- rescue operations, with statistics compiled annually.

Abstract In 1979, about 2000 people in central Taiwan were intoxicated via rice oil consumption that was contaminated with polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). This "Yu-cheng" incident was one of the two known major human PCB intoxication episodes. Twenty years after the intoxication, serum samples of 435 Yu-cheng victims, 414 adults and 21 children, were collected. Sixteen PCB congeners were analyzed with a gas chromatograph-electron capture detector. We found the median concentration of total PCBs in the adult serum was 1500 ng/g lipid, still substantially higher than that of the general population in Taiwan (3.7-fold) and most seafood consumers in the world. Most of analyzed PCB congeners in children were below or around the detection limits. Congener #138, however, had the highest concentrations, approximately accounting for 55% and 29% in the child and adult groups, respectively. Given that PCBs are persistent organic pollutants and endocrine disruptors, the concentrations and congener-specific profiles regarding the Yu-cheng victims provide valuable information for the investigation of such chemicals in humans.

Abstract Objective: To prospectively evaluate the relationship between the clinical course of posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) and quality of life (QOL) among Taiwan earthquake survivors for 3 years.
Methods: A population survey was done in a Taiwan township near the epicenter of a severe earthquake (7.3 on the Richter scale). Trained assistants used the Medical Outcomes Study Short Form-36 (MOS SF-36) and the Disaster-Related Psychological Screening Test to interview earthquake survivors 16 and older. A total of 1756 respondents were surveyed during the 3-year follow-up period.
Results: At 0.5 and 3 years after the earthquake, the estimated rate of PTSS (cutoff point, 3/4) was 23.8% and 4.4%, respectively. The survivors with PTSS scored lower for each concept of the MOS SF-36 at these two intervals. Three years after the earthquake, the survivors in the persistently healthy group showed the highest scores in all subscales and domains of the MOS SF-36; second-highest was the recovering group; third-highest was the delayed PTSS group; and the persistent PTSS group showed the lowest scores in all concepts and domains. Notably, survivors with delayed onset PTSS exhibited a lower QOL when PTSS occurred.
Conclusions: Three years after the earthquake, the estimated rate of PTSS had declined, and the QOL of the survivors varied according to how their PTSS had progressed.
