Abstract Objectives: To assess the skeletal and dental maxillary transverse compensation (yaw) on the cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) three-dimensional reconstructed image of the skull in two groups of patients, both clinically affected by a class III malocclusion with deviation of the lower midline.
Materials and methods: An observational retrospective study was designed to analyse differences in two groups of patients, the first one was composed by patients affected by horizontal condylar hyperplasia, the second one by patients affected by dento-skeletal asymmetric class III malocclusion. Each group was composed by 15 patients. Transverse analysis was performed by measuring five landmarks (three bilateral and two uneven) with respect to a mid-sagittal plane; sagittal analysis was performed by measuring the sagittal distance on the mid-sagittal plane between bilateral points. Means were compared through inferential analysis.
Results: In the condylar hyperplasia group, all differences between the two sides were not statistically significant, nor for canines' difference (P = .0817), for molars (P = .1105) or for jugular points (.05871). In the class III group, the differences between the two sides were statistically significant for molars (P = .0019) and jugular points (P = .0031) but not for canines (P = .1158). Comparing the two groups, significant differences were found only for incisors' midline deviation (P = .0343) and canine (P = .0177).
Conclusion: The study of the yaw on CBCT should be integrated into three-dimensional cephalometry and could help in differentiating the various malocclusion patterns.

Abstract Likelihood-based tests of phylogenetic trees are a foundation of modern systematics. Over the past decade, an enormous wealth and diversity of model-based approaches have been developed for phylogenetic inference of both gene trees and species trees. However, while many techniques exist for conducting formal likelihood-based tests of gene trees, such frameworks are comparatively underdeveloped and underutilized for testing species tree hypotheses. To date, widely used tests of tree topology are designed to assess the fit of classical models of molecular sequence data and individual gene trees and thus are not readily applicable to the problem of species tree inference. To address this issue, we derive several analogous likelihood-based approaches for testing topologies using modern species tree models and heuristic algorithms that use gene tree topologies as input for maximum likelihood estimation under the multispecies coalescent. For the purpose of comparing support for species trees, these tests leverage the statistical procedures of their original gene tree-based counterparts that have an extended history for testing phylogenetic hypotheses at a single locus. We discuss and demonstrate a number of applications, limitations, and important considerations of these tests using simulated and empirical phylogenomic data sets that include both bifurcating topologies and reticulate network models of species relationships. Finally, we introduce the open-source R package SpeciesTopoTestR (SpeciesTopology Tests in R) that includes a suite of functions for conducting formal likelihood-based tests of species topologies given a set of input gene tree topologies.

Abstract Aim: This research aims to assess the oral hygiene habits of women in the perinatal period. The study also aims to ascertain the degree of awareness of mothers, or future mothers, about the importance of oral hygiene for themselves and their child.
Materials and methods: Study design: aepidemiological, observational, cross-sectional survey among a group of young women of childbearing age. The group was composed of mothers recruited from kindergartens and pregnant women who went to counseling centers or participated in childbirth courses throughout Italy.
Results: The sample included 500 women from Central and Northern Italy and 263 from Southern Italy for a total of 763 subjects. Most of them were Italian (87.9%) and just over 50% of them had at least one child (52.7%); 40% were above 35 years old, and 52% were between 25 and 35 years of age.
Conclusion: Young women often underestimate the importance of oral hygiene even before pregnancy, and the impact of oral hygiene lasts throughout gestation and continues after childbirth.

Abstract Boreal rivers transport and process large amounts of organic and inorganic materials derived from their catchments, yet quantitative estimates and patterns of carbon (C) transport and emissions in these large rivers are scarce relative to those of high-latitude lakes and headwater streams. Here, we present the results of a large-scale survey of 23 major rivers in northern Québec sampled during the summer period of 2010, which aimed to determine the magnitude and spatial variability of different C species (carbon dioxide - CO₂, methane - CH₄, total carbon – TC, dissolved organic carbon - DOC and inorganic carbon - DIC), as well as to identify their main drivers. In addition, we constructed a first order mass balance of total riverine C emissions to the atmosphere (outgassing from the main river channel) and export to the ocean over summer. All rivers were supersaturated in pCO₂ and pCH₄ (partial pressure of CO₂ and CH₄), and the resulting fluxes varied widely among rivers, especially the CH₄. There was a positive relationship between DOC and gas concentrations, suggesting a common watershed source of these C species. DOC concentrations declined as a function of % land surface covered by water (lentic + lotic systems) in the watershed, suggesting that lentic systems may act as a net sink of organic matter in the landscape. The C balance suggests that the export component is higher than atmospheric C emissions in the river channel. However, for heavily dammed rivers, C emissions to the atmosphere approaches the C export component. Such studies are highly important for the overall efforts to effectively quantify and incorporate major boreal rivers into whole-landscape C budgets, to determine the net role of these ecosystems as C sinks or sources, and to predict how these might shift under anthropogenic pressures and dynamic climate conditions.

Abstract Aim: Parents and caregivers, particularly in Italy, often have limited knowledge about their children's oral health. The primary objective of the study is to evaluate the educational effectiveness of a book on nutrition and prevention of oral diseases entitled "Oral health of mother and child in the first 1000 days of life".
Materials: The sample for this study was composed of 103 adult Italian women who were potential caregivers of one or more children (e.g., mothers, grandmothers, babysitters, and educators). The enrolled women completed a preliminary online survey which included questions about their socio-demographic characteristics and their knowledge on oral health in the first 1000 days of life of newborns (30 questions). Following the survey, they received the educational book. After reading it, the participants completed a second online survey with the same 30 questions, to measure any improvement in their knowledge.
Conclusion: It appears that our educational book about nutrition and prevention of oral diseases was effective in enhancing knowledge among the participants in our study. These findings suggest that this educational resource has the potential to be a valuable tool in preventing oral diseases in paediatric populations. However, further confirmation of these results should be obtained through randomised controlled trials.
