Abstract The purpose was to determine the nutritional status of the infants and children under six years old in the area of the type I ambulatory “Dr. José Maria Vargas” located in Veragacha, Irribarren county, Barquisimeto. A descriptive study was conducted in a nonprobabilisticsample of one hundred and three (103) kids from 1 month to 6 years old. A questionnaire was applied to the mothers and structured in: age, sex, socio-economic status and anthropometric data (height and weight). The anthropometric data was taken to the OMS’s tables and was interpreted according to the combination of indicators: eight/age,weight/height and height/age. The analysis showed the following results: According to the total of the sample: 66.0% presented normal nutritional status; 8.7% current malnutrition;6.8% low stature and 8.7% excess malnutrition. Most of children belonged to the stratum IV(77.0%) and was appreciated an increment of malnutrition in the lower stratums. There was no statistical signi cant difference between the variables under investigation. This work Decanato de Ciencias de la Salud. Universidad Centroccidental “Lisandro Alvarado” (UCLA)expects to stimulate the development of plans and programs that improve the nutritional status of the children in the area, the detection and the early correction of the current risk factors.

Abstract Eastern Mediterranean sediments are characterized by cyclic deposition of organic-rich sediments known as sapropels. Enhanced primary productivity combined with bottom water oxygen depletion are thought to be the main drivers for sapropel deposition. We selected sapropel layers from a suite of ODP-Leg 160 cores, and applied a set of geochemical proxies to determine paleo-productivity variations, redox conditions of the water column during deposition, and provenance of detrital material.
High sedimentary Ba/Al and Corg contents indicate enhanced primary production, whereas the sedimentary La/Lu ratio, points to an enhanced contribution from a North African riverine source, during sapropel formation. These features are especially pronounced on Sapropels S5 and S7, deposited during a particularly warm climatic interval. This indicates a more intense North African drainage/weathering and consequently run-off for those sapropels that have the most enhanced expression of productivity too. Correspondingly, the latter has also resulted in bottom water redox conditions that have been more severe during these sapropels than during others.
Deepwater formation from Adriatic and Aegean areas, thought to be mainly controlled by sustained cooling of preconditioned surface waters, triggers the onset of bottomwater ventilation, thus sapropel duration. Our data, therefore, suggest that the intensity of sapropel formation is determined by the North African monsoonal system, whereas their duration is directed by northern borderlands climatic conditions.

Abstract A multiproxy geochemical study of nine sapropel layers from ODP Hole 964A, ODP Leg 160 in the eastern Mediterranean spanning the Pliocene-Holocene time interval provides new insights into the evolution of sapropel deposition. Paleoenvironmental proxies were used for reconstruction of productivity (Ba derived from marine barite), oxygen conditions (trace metal ratios) and sedimentary regime (clay minerals, detrital elements). These proxies reveal a significant increase in river runoff relative to decreasing aeolian input during sapropel deposition over the whole time interval. Ba excess supports the argument that a significant increase in export productivity is the main triggering mechanism for sapropel deposition, although preservation also played an important role. Furthermore, major differences exist in depositional conditions, including both oxygenation and productivity since the Pliocene. Productivity fluctuated substantially and was higher during the Pliocene and Pleistocene than during the Holocene; at the same time decreasing oxygen availability parallels the enhanced productivity. Dysoxic to anoxic conditions appear to coincide with marine productivity maxima, thus suggesting that oxygen depletion may be linked to greater consumption rather than restricted circulation. This correspondence supports the hypothesis that productivity fluctuations resulting from climate oscillations were the main cause of enhanced organic matter contents and also a main controlling factor for reduced oxygen availability.

Abstract "Abstract: Concussion is a type of mild traumatic brain injury, is common, and occurs both in sport and as a result of falls or accidents. Concussion has become an increasingly recognized public health concern, largely driven by prominent media coverage of athletes who have sustained concussion. Although much has been written about this condition, we still do not understand its natural history, and we are only now beginning to recognize that concussion often manifests in different clinical domains. These may require targeted treatment in and of themselves; otherwise, persistent postconcussive symptoms may develop. Although most individuals who sustain a concussion recover, and although concussion is a treatable condition, it is important that concussion be managed early and comprehensively to avoid a more prolonged clinical trajectory. A relatively recent term often used in the setting of concussion is repetitive head impact exposure-a biomechanical force applied to the head that does not generate a clinical manifestation of concussion, but may result in structural brain changes. Although it is often assumed that repetitive head impact exposure leads to long-term neurological sequelae, the science to document this assumption is in its infancy. Repeated concussions may lead to depression or cognitive impairment later in life, and there is an emerging literature that repeated concussion and repetitive head impact exposure are associated with chronic traumatic encephalopathy or other neurodegenerative diseases. Currently there is no known causal connection between concussion, repetitive head impact exposure, and neurodegeneration, although this research is also still in its infancy. What is clear is that (a) concussion prevention and safety should be paramount in sport and in society, (b) concussion management should begin immediately and should include clinical domains, and (c) research on concussion and repetitive head impact exposure must continue to move forward. Keywords: concussion; mild traumatic brain injury; clinical domains; repetitive head impact exposure; chronic traumatic encephalopathy; safety"--
