    Abstract Objective: To investigate the feasibility of assessing the viscoelastic properties of the brain using magnetic resonance elastography (MRE) and a novel MRE transducer to determine the relationship between the viscoelastic properties and glymphatic function in neurologically normal individuals.
    Materials and methods: This prospective study included 47 neurologically normal individuals aged 23-74 years (male-to-female ratio, 21:26). The MRE was acquired using a gravitational transducer based on a rotational eccentric mass as the driving system. The magnitude of the complex shear modulus |G*| and the phase angle ϕ were measured in the centrum semiovale area.     Abstract Purpose: To compare the clinical, qualitative and quantitative imaging phenotypes, including tumor oxygenation characteristics of midline-located IDH-wildtype glioblastomas (GBMs) and H3 K27-altered diffuse midline gliomas (DMGs) in adults.
    Methods: Preoperative MRI data of 55 adult patients with midline-located IDH-wildtype GBM or H3 K27-altered DMG (32 IDH-wildtype GBM and 23 H3 K27-altered DMG patients) were included. Qualitative imaging assessment was performed. Quantitative imaging assessment including the tumor volume, normalized cerebral blood volume, capillary transit time heterogeneity (CTH), oxygen extraction fraction (OEF), relative cerebral metabolic rate of oxygen values, and mean ADC value were performed from the tumor mask via automatic segmentation. Univariable and multivariable logistic analyses were performed.
    Results: On multivariable analysis, age (odds ratio [OR] = 0.92, P = 0.015), thalamus or medulla location (OR = 10.48, P = 0.013), presence of necrosis (OR = 0.15, P = 0.038), and OEF (OR = 0.01, P = 0.042) were independent predictors to differentiate H3 K27-altered DMG from midline-located IDH-wildtype GBM. The area under the curve, accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity of the multivariable model were 0.88 (95 % confidence interval: 0.77-0.95), 81.8 %, 82.6 %, and 81.3 %, respectively.
    Conclusions: Along with younger age, tumor location, less frequent necrosis, and lower OEF may be useful imaging biomarkers to differentiate H3 K27-altered DMG from midline-located IDH-wildtype GBM. Tumor oxygenation imaging biomarkers may reflect the less hypoxic nature of H3 K27-altered DMG than IDH-wildtype GBM and may contribute to differentiation.

    Materials and methods: Patients with OPSCC who underwent
    Results: A total of 126 patients (118 male and 8 female; mean age: 60 years) were included. Of these, 103 patients (81.7%) were HPV-positive, and 23 patients (18.3%) were HPV-negative. AUROC values in the test set were 0.762 [95% confidence interval (CI), 0.564-0.959], 0.638 (95% CI, 0.404-0.871), and 0.823 (95% CI, 0.668-0.978) for Models 1, 2, and 3, respectively. The net reclassification improvement of Model 3, compared with that of Model 1, in the test set was 0.119.

    Abstract The increased incidence of dilated perivascular spaces (dPVSs) visible on MRI has been observed with advancing age, but the relevance of PVS dilatation to normal aging across the lifespan has yet to be fully clarified. In the current study, we sought to find out the age dependence of dPVSs by exploring changes in different characteristics of PVS dilatation across a wide range of age. For 1220 healthy subjects aged between 18 and 100 years, PVSs were automatically segmented and characteristics of PVS dilatation were assessed in terms of the burden, location, and morphology of PVSs in the white matter (WM) and basal ganglia (BG). A machine learning model using the random forests method was constructed to estimate the subjects' age by employing the PVS features. The constructed machine learning model was able to estimate the age of the subjects with an error of 9.53 years on average (correlation = 0.875). The importance of the PVS features indicated the primary contribution of the burden of PVSs in the BG and the additional contribution of locational and morphological changes of PVSs, specifically peripheral extension and reduced linearity, in the WM to age estimation. Indeed, adding the PVS location or morphology features to the PVS burden features provided an improvement to the performance of age estimation. The age dependence of dPVSs in terms of such various characteristics of PVS dilatation in healthy subjects could provide a more comprehensive reference for detecting brain disease-related PVS dilatation.

    Abstract Objectives: To develop and validate a multiparametric MRI-based radiomics model with optimal oversampling and machine learning techniques for predicting human papillomavirus (HPV) status in oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC).
    Methods: This retrospective, multicenter study included consecutive patients with newly diagnosed and pathologically confirmed OPSCC between January 2017 and December 2020 (110 patients in the training set, 44 patients in the external validation set). A total of 293 radiomics features were extracted from three sequences (T2-weighted images [T2WI], contrast-enhanced T1-weighted images [CE-T1WI], and ADC). Combinations of three feature selection, five oversampling, and 12 machine learning techniques were evaluated to optimize its diagnostic performance. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) of the top five models was validated in the external validation set.
    Results: A total of 154 patients (59.2 ± 9.1 years; 132 men [85.7%]) were included, and oversampling was employed to account for data imbalance between HPV-positive and HPV-negative OPSCC (86.4% [133/154] vs. 13.6% [21/154]). For the ADC radiomics model, the combination of random oversampling and ridge showed the highest diagnostic performance in the external validation set (AUC, 0.791; 95% CI, 0.775-0.808). The ADC radiomics model showed a higher trend in diagnostic performance compared to the radiomics model using CE-T1WI (AUC, 0.604; 95% CI, 0.590-0.618), T2WI (AUC, 0.695; 95% CI, 0.673-0.717), and a combination of both (AUC, 0.642; 95% CI, 0.626-0.657).
    Conclusions: The ADC radiomics model using random oversampling and ridge showed the highest diagnostic performance in predicting the HPV status of OPSCC in the external validation set.
    Clinical relevance statement: Among multiple sequences, the ADC radiomics model has a potential for generalizability and applicability in clinical practice. Exploring multiple oversampling and machine learning techniques was a valuable strategy for optimizing radiomics model performance.
    Key points: • Previous radiomics studies using multiparametric MRI were conducted at single centers without external validation and had unresolved data imbalances. • Among the ADC, CE-T1WI, and T2WI radiomics models and the ADC histogram models, the ADC radiomics model was the best-performing model for predicting human papillomavirus status in oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma. • The ADC radiomics model with the combination of random oversampling and ridge showed the highest diagnostic performance.

    Abstract When a stimulus is associated with an external reward, its chance of being consolidated into long-term memory is boosted via dopaminergic facilitation of long-term potentiation in the hippocampus. Given that higher temporal distance (TD) has been found to discount the subjective value of a reward, we hypothesized that memory performance associated with a more immediate reward will result in better memory performance. We tested this hypothesis by measuring both behavioral memory performance and brain activation using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) during memory encoding and retrieval tasks. Contrary to our hypothesis, both behavioral and fMRI results suggest that the TD of rewards might enhance the chance of the associated stimulus being remembered. The fMRI data demonstrate that the lateral prefrontal cortex, which shows encoding-related activation proportional to the TD, is reactivated when searching for regions that show activation proportional to the TD during retrieval. This is not surprising given that this region is not only activated to discriminate between future vs. immediate rewards, it is also a part of the retrieval-success network. These results provide support for the conclusion that the encoding-retrieval overlap provoked as the rewards are more delayed may lead to better memory performance of the items associated with the rewards.
