Abstract Increased concerns exist about the presence of anticancer drugs in wastewater. However, knowledge of the impacts of anticancer drugs on the performance of the system and microbial communities during wastewater treatment processes is limited. We examined the effect of three anticancer drugs commonly detected in influents of wastewater treatment plants applied at three different concentration levels on the performance, efficiency of anticancer drug removal, and prokaryotic microbiome in an aerobic granular sludge system (AGS) operated in a sequential batch reactor (SBR). We showed that an AGS can efficiently remove anticancer drugs, with removal rates in the range of 53-100% depending on the type of drug and concentration level. Anticancer drugs significantly decreased the abundance of total bacterial and archaeal communities, an effect that was linked to reduced nitrogen removal efficiency. Anticancer drugs also reduced the diversity, altered the prokaryotic community composition, reduced network complexity, and induced a decrease of a wide range of predicted bacterial functions. Specific bacterial taxa responsive to the addition of anticancer drugs with known roles in nitrification and denitrification were identified. This study shows anticancer drugs should be monitored in the future as they can induce changes in the performance and microbiome of wastewater treatment technologies.

Abstract This article summarizes the evolution of dedicated prostate PET instrumentation. It starts by introducing prostate cancer, as well as the most common diagnostic and staging methods that are used in the clinics. Then, it describes the key aspects of PET detectors and their assembly in full PET scanners highlighting the most suitable geometries for prostate examination, and a review on the existing prostate dedicated PET. Finally, the next steps for extending the use of PET in the daily diagnose, staging, and image-guided biopsy of patients with prostate cancer are discussed.

Abstract Forest ecosystems worldwide currently face worrying episodes of forest decline, which have boosted weakening and mortality of the trees. In the Mediterranean region, especially in the southeast Iberian Peninsula, Pinus sylvestris forests are severely affected by this phenomenon, and it has been commonly attributed to drought events. Remarkably, the role of root microbiota on pine decline has been overlooked and remains unclear. We therefore used metabarcoding to identify the belowground microbial communities of decline-affected and unaffected pine trees. Taxonomic composition of bacterial and fungal rhizosphere communities, and fungal populations dwelling in root endosphere showed different profiles depending on the health status of the trees. The root endosphere of asymptomatic trees was as strongly dominated by 'Candidatus Phytoplasma pini' as the root of decline-affected pines, accounting for >99 % of the total bacterial sequences in some samples. Notwithstanding, the titer of this phytopathogen was four-fold higher in symptomatic trees than in symptomless ones. Furthermore, the microbiota inhabiting the root endosphere of decline-affected trees assembled into a less complex and more modularized network. Thus, the observed changes in the microbial communities could be a cause or a consequence of forest decline phenomenon. Moreover, 'Ca. Phytoplasma pini' is positively correlated to Pinus sylvestris decline events, either as the primary cause of pine decline or as an opportunistic pathogen exacerbating the process once the tree has been weaken by other factors.

Abstract A new simple, fast and environmentally friendly deep eutectic solvent based dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (DES-based DLLME) methodology assisted by vortex is presented for the separation and preconcentration of three elements (i.e., Fe, Cu and Pb) from edible oil samples (i.e., soybean, sunflower, rapeseed, sesame, and olive oil) prior to the determination by microwave-induced plasma optical emission spectrometry (MIP-OES). The deep eutectic solvent selected as extractant (i.e., choline chloride and ethylene glycol, 1:2) is synthesized and characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (
