Abstract The observations reported in this paper seem to justify the hope that the obstacle afforded to experimentation by the frequent presence of spontaneous encephalitis and nephritis in American and European rabbits does not exist to the same degree in rabbits from certain other localities. The observations are, furthermore despite their obvious limitations, in conformity with the theory that the disease is not one common to domestic rabbits everywhere, but rather that it occurs in special localities from which, given favorable conditions, it may spread. Thus far it has not been reported in tropical climates or south of the equator.

Abstract Since the symptoms produced in experimental animals by the encephalitic virus of Kobayashi and by the virus of rabies are similar, and are accompanied by lesions which are indistinguishable, and since a cross-immunity is demonstrable between the two viruses, the conclusion is advanced that the specimen of so called encephalitis virus isolated by Kobayashi is in reality a specimen of rabic virus.

Abstract Erythroblasts, leucocytes, and lymphocytes resemble other cells of the body in containing a restricted area of fluidity in their cytoplasm. In special preparations this fluid appears in the form of a more or less complicated reticulum which seems to be continually but slowly changing in shape. For convenience the fluid may provisionally be referred to as reticular material, emphasis being laid on its composition rather than its form. As a working hypothesis it is safe to assume that the chemical and physical properties of this material vary in cells of different kinds as well as in different stages in the activity of the same cell. The conclusion that it is "identical" in different cells, because the present crude methods of technique reveal no fundamental differences, would be as incorrect as the statement that the serum of different animals is identical, because no difference is observed on microscopic examination.

Abstract 1. Pleomorphic, bacterium-like, Gram-negative, intracellular microorganisms, which stained much less intensely with ordinary dyes than most bacteria were found in sixteen species of ticks comprising examples of the Argasidae and the Ixodidae. 2. In six of these species studied intensively slight differences in the microorganisms were detected, sufficient to permit identification of the vectors by microscopic examination of the microorganism alone. 3. No evidence was seen of injury to the tissues of the arachnid hosts of the microorganisms other than that incident to mechanical distention of the cells containing them. 4. The detection of the microorganisms in the eggs of ten species, in the unfed larvae of eight species, and at nearly related stages throughout the life cycle of three others leads to the conclusion that they are transmitted hereditarily.
