Abstract Trends in nonhuman animal shelter intake and outcomes for dogs and cats in Metro Denver, CO, between 1989 and 2010 were assessed by linear regression analyses of data from 4 of the largest facilities covering 3 counties. The data were analyzed for trends on 3 scales: actual numbers per year, number per 1,000 residents per year, and as a percentage of total intake. Approximately 21,000 dogs and 16,000 cats were taken into the shelters in 2010, representing a 24% decrease for each since 1989. For dogs on a per-1,000-residents basis, intake decreased by 44%, euthanasia by 77%, and adoption by 13%; the live release rate (LRR) increased by 39%. For cats on the same scale, there was a 53% decrease in intake until 1998 followed by an 11% increase through 2010, and an 82% decrease in euthanasia until 2000 followed by a 24% increase through 2010. Adoption of cats per 1,000 residents remained unchanged, but the overall LRR for cats doubled during the study period. Substantially increasing trends in the transfer of dogs and cats from shelters to rescue organizations reflect efforts to optimize adoptions.

Title translation Stress-related risk factors for depression in young girls.
Abstract The prevalence of major depression in adolescents is remarkable. Stress has been hypothesised to contribute to the maintenance of depression in young patients. This study aims to elucidate stress-related predictive variables for the maintenance of depression in young girls. A longitudinal design with a time interval of six months was used to assess stress load and depression in 135 15-year-old girls. Stress was measured by the "Fragebogen zur Erhebung von Stress und Stressbewältigung im Kindes- und Jugendalter" and the cortisol awakening response as a biological indicator for hyperactivity of the HPA axis. Depression was quantified by the "Depressionsinventar für Kinder und Jugendliche". The data were analysed by multiple linear regression. When adjusting for initial depression, psychological stress load, physical stress symptoms, and stress vulnerability proved to be predictive for depression, whereas chronic stress neither at the psychological level nor as indicated by the cortisol awakening response had statistically significant effects. The results show the stability of depression in adolescent girls, but also prove an additional influence of acute stress variables.

  5. Article ; Online: The influence of fluid inclusions, organics, and calcite fabric on trace element distributions in stalagmites

Abstract: ... affects the abundance or distribution of trace elements, the element distribution (Na, Mg, Sr, U, Al, Y ...

Abstract Trace elements and calcite fabrics in stalagmites are increasingly employed as indicators of past environmental conditions. The drivers of trace element concentrations and fabrics reflect a complex interplay of factors during crystal growth, and accurate interpretation of geochemical proxies requires a clear understanding of the incorporation of the proxy signal in the stalagmite. We employ a series of non-destructive techniques to compare the spatial distribution of water, organic components, and trace elements and in relationship with calcite fabrics, and evaluate if these distributions are consistent with recent hypotheses about controlling factors on crystal fabrics, fluid inclusions, and element incorporation. We use for the first time Fourier Transformation Infrared Focal-Plane Array (FTIR-FPA) imaging to show the distribution of molecular water (3,400 cm−1 absorbance) and organic matter (2,983 cm−1) in calcite. To test if entrapped water in speleothem calcite affects the abundance or distribution of trace elements, the element distribution (Na, Mg, Sr, U, Al, Y, and Zn) is mapped by Laser Ablation Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS). Transmitted Light Microscope imaging constrains crystal fabrics. We find that stalagmite areas with strong Organic Matter fluorescence via Confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy coincide with areas of high Fourier Transformation Infrared absorbance at 2,983 cm−1, suggesting common co-location of multiple organic matter types in the stalagmite. While microscopic fluid inclusions visible in transmitted light are also detected by FTIR 3400 cm−1 absorbance, the FTIR additionally detects submicroscopic fluid inclusions, but not evident in transmitted light microscopy. In most samples, Na concentration is elevated in regions of high fluid inclusion density, suggesting that a significant portion of Na may be hosted in entrapped water rather than in the calcite. Only samples with 100-fold higher Y, feature Na concentrations which appear dominated by coupled Y-Na ...

Abstract We report a rare case of fatal intoxication in a 40-year-old man caused by injection of a fluid containing organic mercury, allegedly in an attack with a syringe fixed to the tip of an umbrella. The man suffered from severe neurological symptoms and progressive multiorgan failure and died 10 months later in refractory status epilepticus. Autopsy revealed severe brain atrophy and non-specific kidney damage. Neuropathological examination showed neuronal loss especially in the occipital lobe, distinct granule cell necrosis in the cerebellum and Wallerian degeneration in the brainstem. Postmortem toxicological analysis revealed extremely increased levels of mercury in liver and kidney tissue as well as methylmercury levels in peripheral blood.

Abstract Depressive Störungen bei Kindern und Jugendlichen zeigen hohe Prävalenzraten.
