    Abstract During Ocean Drilling Program Leg 199 a high-resolution (ab. 1-2 cm/k.y.) biogenic sediment record from the late Paleocene to the early Miocene was recovered, containing an uninterrupted set of geomagnetic chrons as well as a detailed record of calcareous and siliceous biostratigraphic datum events. Shipboard lithologic proxy measurements and shore-based determinations of CaCO3 revealed regular cycles that can be attributed to climatic forcing. Discovering drill sites with well defined magneto- and biostratigraphic records that also show clear lithologic cycles is rare and valuable and creates the opportunity to develop a detailed stratigraphic intersite correlation, providing the basis to study paleoceanographic processes and mass accumulation rates at high resolution.
    Here we present extensive postcruise work that extends the shipboard composite depth stratigraphy by providing a high-resolution revised meters composite depth (rmcd) scale to compensate for depth distortion within individual cores. The depth-aligned data were then used to generate stacked records of lithologic proxy measurements. Making use of the increased signal-to-noise ratio in the stacked records, we then proceeded to generate a detailed site-to-site correlation between Sites 1218 and 1219 in order to decrease the depth uncertainty for magneto- and biostratigraphic datums. Stacked lithologic proxy records in combination with discrete measurements of CaCO3 were then exploited to calculate high-resolution carbonate concentration curves by regression of the multisensor track data with discrete measurements. By matching correlative features between the cores and wireline logging data, we also rescaled our core rmcd back to in situ depths. Our study identifies lithology-dependent core expansion due to unloading as the mechanism of varying stratigraphic thicknesses between cores.

    Abstract Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) Expedition 320 recovered high-quality paleomagnetic records with over 800 dated reversals and decimeter-scale cyclic sediments which provide an outstanding framework to inter-calibrate major fossil groups and refine magnetic polarity chrons for the early Miocene, the entire Oligocene and the late Eocene Epoch. In order to reconstruct the climate history of the Equatorial Pacific one of the major objectives of the Pacific Equatorial Age Transect (PEAT) is the compilation of a Cenozoic Megasplice which integrates all available bio-, chemo-, and magnetostratigraphic data including key records from Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 199.

    Here we present extended post-cruise refinements of the shipboard composite depth scales and composite records of IODP Expedition 320 Sites U1331, U1332, U1333, U1334 as well as ODP Leg 199 Sites 1218, 1219 and 1220. The revised composite records were used to perform a site-to-site correlation and integration of Leg 199 and Exp. 320 sites. Based on this decimeter scale correlation a high resolution integrated paleomagnetic and biostratigraphic framework for the Equatorial Pacific is established covering the time from 20 to 40 Ma. This unprecedented sedimentary compendium from the Equatorial Pacific will be the backbone for paleoceanographic reconstructions for the late Paleogene.

The method is based on a modification of electronic speckle pattern interferometry that incorporates the interference of a transmitted object beam rather than the standard method using a reflected object beam. The resulting whole-field real-time images are a valuable resource for both scientific and pedagogical use.

    Abstract Repetitive negative thinking (RNT) is a transdiagnostic symptom observed across mood and anxiety disorders and is characterized by frequent, distressing thoughts that are perceived as uncontrollable. Specific forms of RNT have been linked to increased suicide risk. However, most work examining links between RNT and suicide has been conducted within specific disorders and subtypes of RNT (e.g., rumination in individuals with depression). The present study aimed to investigate associations between transdiagnostic RNT and suicidal ideation. We hypothesized RNT would be associated with suicide risk beyond disorder-specific clinical symptoms. Fifty-four participants with mood, anxiety, and/or traumatic stress disorders completed an interview assessing suicidal risk (Columbia-Suicide Severity Rating Scale (C-SSRS)) and self-report questionnaires assessing transdiagnostic RNT, depression, and anxiety. Based on C-SSRS, we divided participants into high or low suicide risk groups. We analyzed the relationship between suicidal risk group and RNT and found that RNT was uniquely associated with suicidal risk group, controlling for depression and anxiety severity. Our results suggest including assessments of RNT may have clinical utility for understanding the degree of suicide risk in individuals and point to the potential utility of including clinical interventions to target this symptom for those at high risk of suicide.

    Abstract The acoustic standing wave near the end of an open pipe is investigated using spectrally analyzed high-speed transmission electronic speckle pattern interferometry. It is shown that the standing wave extends beyond the open end of the pipe and the amplitude decays exponentially with distance from the end. Additionally, a pressure node is observed near the end of the pipe in a position that is not spatially periodic with the other nodes in the standing wave. A sinusoidal fit to the amplitude of the standing wave inside the pipe indicates that the end correction is well predicted by current theory.

    Abstract Solution scattering techniques, such as small and wide-angle X-ray scattering (SWAXS), provide valuable insights into the structure and dynamics of biological macromolecules in solution. In this study, we present an approach to accurately predict solution X-ray scattering profiles at wide angles from atomic models by generating high-resolution electron density maps. Our method accounts for the excluded volume of bulk solvent by calculating unique adjusted atomic volumes directly from the atomic coordinates. This approach eliminates the need for a free fitting parameter commonly used in existing algorithms, resulting in improved accuracy of the calculated SWAXS profile. An implicit model of the hydration shell is generated which uses the form factor of water. Two parameters, namely the bulk solvent density and the mean hydration shell contrast, are adjusted to best fit the data. Results using eight publicly available SWAXS profiles show high quality fits to the data. In each case, the optimized parameter values show small adjustments demonstrating that the default values are close to the true solution. Disabling parameter optimization results in a significant improvement of the calculated scattering profiles compared to the leading software. The algorithm is computationally efficient, showing more than tenfold reduction in execution time compared to the leading software. The algorithm is encoded in a command line script called denss.pdb2mrc.py and is available open source as part of the DENSS v1.7.0 software package (https://github.com/tdgrant1/denss). In addition to improving the ability to compare atomic models to experimental SWAXS data, these developments pave the way for increasing the accuracy of modeling algorithms utilizing SWAXS data while decreasing the risk of overfitting.
