    Abstract This project involves a Masters module on political economy, taught annually to diverse cohorts studying an MSc in international business. It has generated a substantial resource of learner-created material. The opening weeks of the course introduce key international political economy (IPE) concepts; then the module addresses challenges to global stability and the business environment. Students are invited to work in groups to create researched presentations on any country in which issues of governance, political dysfunction, or stresses relating to globalization, affect economic and political development. Each presentation is supported by a reading list and other support materials. Over five years, countries ranging from St Lucia to Myanmar, from China to Romania, have been included. This student-generated, student-selected work has built a developing resource for the module, available on the module Virtual Learning Platform. The initiative showcases independent learning and develops key skills, group work, research, and enhanced presentation techniques. Several presentations have incorporated mixed media. Importantly, students bring their prior experience and own-country knowledge to the wider cohort, encouraging and enabling internationalist perspectives, sharing experience and comparison between diverse situations and challenges. The project therefore facilitates enhanced cross-cultural understanding and sharing of cultural capital to generate educational capital.

    Abstract This article assesses the EU Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) in the Western Balkans, with a focus on EUFOR Althea in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH). Althea is a military operation that conducts mainly civilian functions as well as the training of the Bah Armed Forces; its 'civilianisation' is symptomatic of CSDP's orientation as a mainly civilian crisis management instrument. Althea works within the framework of the Union's 'comprehensive approach' to regional development and the accession process of the Western Balkans to the EU. I argue that the mission displays the bureaucratic modus operandi of CSDP and not a Grand Strategy approach. Nevertheless, CSDP's incremental, lowest-common-denominator, low cost, low risk bureaucratic politics have enabled a form of emergent strategy that complements the Union's multi-instrument and comprehensive approach to development throughout the Western Balkans. I further suggest that the EU Global Strategy (EUGS) and the newly activated Permanent Structured Cooperation (PESCO) provides opportunities for EU member states to build on low key emergent strategy to ensure that CSDP develops the substance and actor ness needed to address current threats.

    Abstract Footwear may moderate the transiently heightened asymmetry in lower limb loading associated with peak growth in adolescence during running. This repeated-measures study compared the magnitude and symmetry of peak vertical ground reaction force and instantaneous loading rates (VILRs) in adolescents during barefoot and shod running. Ten adolescents (age, 10.6 ± 1.7 years) ran at self-selected speed (1.7 ± 0.3 m/s) on an instrumented treadmill under three counter-balanced conditions; barefoot and shod with partial-minimal and conventional running shoes. All participants were within one year of their estimated peak height velocity based on sex-specific regression equations. Foot-strike patterns, peak vertical ground reaction force and VILRs were recorded during 20 seconds of steady-state running. Symmetry of ground reaction forces was assessed using the symmetry index. Repeated-measures ANOVAs were used to compare conditions (α=.05). Adolescents used a rearfoot foot-strike pattern during barefoot and shod running.     Abstract The beech leaf-mining weevil, Orchestes fagi, is a common pest of European beech, Fagus sylvatica, and has recently become established in Nova Scotia, Canada where it similarly infests American beech, F. grandifolia. We collected volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted by F. grandifolia leaves at five developmental stages over one growing season and simultaneously analyzed them for volatile emissions and O. fagi antennal response using gas chromatography-electroantennographic detection (GC-EAD). Volatile profiles changed significantly throughout the growing season, shifting from primarily β-caryophyllene, methyl jasmonate, and simple monoterpene emissions to dominance of the bicyclic monoterpene sabinene during maturity. Two VOCs dominant during bud burst, (R)-(+)-limonene and geranyl-p-cymene, may be of biological relevance due to the highly specific oviposition period of O. fagi at this stage though antennal responses were inconclusive. Senescence showed a decrease in blend complexity with an increase in (Z)-3-hexenyl acetate and (Z)-3-hexen-1-ol as well as a resurgence of α-terpinene and geranyl-p-cymene. We present a novel electroantennal preparation for O. fagi. Antennae of both male and female O. fagi responded to the majority of detectable peaks for host volatiles presented via GC-EAD. Females displayed greater overall sensitivities and less specificity to host volatiles and it is hypothesized that this translates to more generalist olfaction than males. It is clear that olfactory cues are important physiologically though their implications on behaviour are still unknown. The results presented in this study provide a baseline and tools on which to connect the complex and highly time-specific phenology of both F. grandifolia and the destructive pest O. fagi through which olfactory-based lures can be investigated for monitoring systems.

    Abstract In Ireland, the interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) assay is routinely used as an ancillary test interpreted in parallel with the single intradermal comparative tuberculin test (SICTT) to maximize the detection of bovine tuberculosis (bTB) infected animals. Up until 2018, a positive test result was recorded in the IFN-γ ELISA assay following whole blood stimulation with purified protein derivative (PPD)-bovine (B), PPD-avian (A) and nil sample (N), using the interpretation criteria, B-N > 50 optical density units (OD), B > 100 and B-A > 0. Following a review of available data, the threshold of the B-A component changed to B-A > 80. As predicting the impact of changing the cut-off thresholds for the IFN-γ test de novo is challenging, the aims of this study were to follow animals that initially tested negative using the new IFN-γ assay interpretation criteria and investigate their future risk of disclosure with bTB, with a focus on animals that otherwise would have been removed when using the older interpretation criteria (0 < B-A ≤ 80). Enrolled animals (n = 28,669 cattle from 527 herds) were followed up for two years (2019-2021), or to point of bTB detection or death. At the end of follow-up, 1151 (4.0%) of enrolled animals were bTB cases. The majority of these cases were diagnosed using SICTT (80.5%). The cumulative number of positive animals that would have been removed if the old cut-off (0 < B-A ≤ 80) was used amounted to 1680 cattle (5.9% of the enrolled cohort). Of these, 127 (7.5%) were diagnosed with bTB during follow-up. In contrast, 1024 of the 1151 cattle which subsequently tested positive during the study period following a negative IFN-γ test would not have been identified with the old or new IFN-γ cut-off criteria. Survival analysis showed that animals that would have been removed under the old interpretation criteria were at increased risk of a positive diagnosis with bTB during follow-up compared to other test negative animals. A newly developed risk prediction model (using a Cox proportional hazard model) showed that age, animal number of SICTT tests, number of inconclusive SICTT tests, B-A (IFN-γ assay), B-N (IFN-γ assay), animals from store herds and the percentage of the rest of the herd that were positive during the breakdown were statistically significantly associated with bTB detection. However, inclusion of the IFN-γ OD variables did not show added value in terms of prediction performance of the model.

    Abstract Integrated-optic components are being increasingly used in astrophysics, mainly where accuracy and precision are paramount. One such emerging technology is nulling interferometry that targets high contrast and high angular resolution. Two of the most critical limitations encountered by nullers are rapid phase fluctuations in the incoming light causing instability in the interference and chromaticity of the directional couplers that prevent a deep broadband interferometric null. We explore the use of a tricoupler designed by ultrafast laser inscription that solves both issues. Simulations of a tricoupler, incorporated into a nuller, result in an order of a magnitude improvement in null depth.

    Abstract Earwax was investigated as a source to identify patients' different inborn errors of metabolism (IEMs). Acylcarnitines, amino acids, and guanidino metabolites were measured from 28 treated patients with 11 different metabolic disorders including 3 organic acidaemias, 2 fatty acid oxidation defects, 6 amino acid disorders, and 1 peroxisomal abnormality. On the basis of the ratio of different acylcarnitine species relative to free carnitine, isovaleric acidaemia, methylmalonic acidaemia, and long-chain hydroxyacylCoA dehydrogenase deficiency could be discriminated from the other disorders. For amino acids, neither creatinine nor alternative amino acid proved suitable reference standards against which results could be expressed. However, argininosuccinate and alloisoleucine were present in significantly elevated concentrations in two patients with argininosuccinate lyase deficiency and two patients with branched-chain ketoacid dehydrogenase deficiency. This study has raised the potential of earwax for investigation of IEMs and may also have role in postmortem investigations. In view of its limited invasiveness, earwax also may have a role as a material to monitor treatment responses and compliance in patients with IEMs.

    Abstract Background: Heightened vertical load beneath the foot has been anecdotally implicated in the development of activity-related heel pain of the calcaneal apophysis in children but is supported by limited evidence.
    Research question: This study investigated whether vertical loading patterns during walking and running differed in children with and without calcaneal apophysitis.
    Methods: Vertical ground reaction force, peak plantar pressure (forefoot, midfoot, heel) and temporospatial gait parameters (cadence, step length, stride, stance and swing phase durations) were determined in children with (n = 14) and without (n = 14) calcaneal apophysitis. Measures were acquired during barefoot walking and running at matched and self-selected speed using an instrumented treadmill, sampling at 120 Hz. Statistical comparisons between groups were made using repeated measure ANOVAs.
    Results: There were no significant between group differences in vertical ground reaction force peaks or regional peak plantar pressures. However, when normalised to stature, cadence was significantly higher (≈ 5%) and step length shorter (≈ 5%) in children with calcaneal apophysitis than those without, but only during running (P <.05). Maximum pressure beneath the rearfoot during running was significantly correlated with self-reported pain in children with calcaneal apophysitis.
    Significance: Peak vertical force and plantar pressures did not differ significantly in children with and without calcaneal apophysitis during walking or running. However, children with calcaneal apophysitis adopted a higher cadence than children without heel pain during running. While the findings suggest that children with calcaneal apophysitis may alter their cadence to lower pressure beneath the heel and, hence pain, they also highlight the benefit of evaluating running rather than walking gait in children with calcaneal apophysitis.
