Abstract Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, labor force is greatly confined by quarantine (social distancing), and limited units of labor and capital are available at the workplace. Millions of employees have lost their jobs and are facing financial hardships. Likewise, capital owners have become illiquid and possibly insolvent within months. This cycle seems to continue for other factors of production as well. Even after lifting quarantines, the global trade might take months (years) to return to its actual potential. Using the GTAP-VA model, the present study simulates the impact of the double-hit scenario of Covid-19 on the global value chains and identifies production losses in different sectors of the world economy.

Abstract The Paris agreement (2015) seems a significant achievement towards a global mitigation policy to climate change. However, implementing the promised Intended Nationally Determined Contribution (INDC) targets by the participating countries has become a real challenge. In this aspect, the input-output life cycle assessment (IO-LCA) model provides an important assessment mechanism to design suitable abatement policies limiting the rising greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The present paper develops an IO-LCA model for Pakistan and estimates all the direct and indirect GHG emissions caused by all the production activities during all the stages of production. This task is achieved in three phases. In phase 1, the Pakistan input-output table (IOT) is constructed. In phase 2, the GHG environmental satellite accounts are created for each sector in the economy. In phase 3, the GHG emissions are linked to different categories of final demand.

Abstract Gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy is an active research field due to the lethal cancer diseases in the GI tract. Cancer treatments result better if diagnosed early and it increases the survival chances. There is a high miss rate in the detection of the abnormalities in the GI tract during endoscopy or colonoscopy due to the lack of attentiveness, tiring procedures, or the lack of required training. The procedure of the detection can be automated to the reduction of the risks by identifying and flagging the suspicious frames. A suspicious frame may have some of the abnormality or the information about anatomical landmark in the frame. The frame then can be analysed for the anatomical landmarks and the abnormalities for the detection of disease. In this research, a real-time endoscopic abnormalities detection system is presented that detects the abnormalities and the landmarks. The proposed system is based on a combination of handcrafted and deep features. Deep features are extracted from lightweight MobileNet convolutional neural network (CNN) architecture. There are some of the classes with a small inter-class difference and a higher intra-class differences, for such classes the same detection threshold is unable to distinguish. The threshold of such classes is learned from the training data using genetic algorithm. The system is evaluated on various benchmark datasets and resulted in an accuracy of 0.99 with the F1-score of 0.91 and Matthews correlation coefficient (MCC) of 0.91 on Kvasir datasets and F1-score of 0.93 on the dataset of DowPK. The system detects abnormalities in real-time with the detection speed of 41 frames per second.

Abstract Lanthanum substitution on spinel Nano particles has a significant repercussion on the several features of materials. Sol–gel (auto-ignition) allowed for the substitution of the rare earth lanthanum ion (La3+) for spinel ferrite with composition SrLaxFe2-xO4 (where 0.00 [Formula: see text] x [Formula: see text] 0.10). As a result of the base’s presence, the systems structural, magnetic, electrical, and magnetic properties are all modified. X-ray diffraction (XRD) assessed the structural characteristics. Using X-ray diffraction, we could determine that each sample had cubic structures. Based on electrical investigation, it can be concluded that the synthesized ferrites are semiconductors, as their direct current (dc) resistivity reduces with increasing temperature. The Curie temperature (Tc) was lowered from 532 K to 462 K with the substitution of lanthanum ions. The values for activation energy increased from 0.24 eV to 0.38 eV when lanthanum is used as a substitute. The values of magnetization decreased from 50 eV to 27 eV as lanthanum content rose. We could see the gentleness of the material in M-H loops. All these parameters show that the prepared sample is a potential material for use in high-frequency applications.

Abstract Bio-based materials are rapidly replacing synthetic materials owing to their significant biomedical applications, easy availability, nontoxicity, biodegradability and biocompatibility. Guar gum (GG) is a plant-derived biocompatible and biodegradable polymeric compound found abundantly in nature. It is a non-ionic, hydrophilic carbohydrate and is a cost-effective hydrocolloid polysaccharide considered as a wonderful representative of the new generation of plant gums. Various composites of guar gum with other polymers have been reported in last few decades and they are extensively used in different industries like food, textile, mining, petrochemical, paper and explosives etc. Easy availability, non-toxicity, eco-friendly and biodegradable nature of GG has made it ideal candidate for for drug delivery (DD) applications. GG based hydrogels, films, scaffolds and nanoparticles have been explored widely for their DD applications. These non-toxic DD carriers can be used for targeted drug delivery. This review article directs the current efforts and improvements on GG and GG-based materials to be used in DD.

Abstract The growth and productivity of maize are severely affected by soil salinity. The crucial determinants for the future performance of plants are productive for seed germination and seedling establishment; however, both stages are liable to soil salinity. For grain, maize is an economically significant crop sensitive to abiotic stresses. However, little is known about defense responses by the salinity-induced antioxidant and oxidative stress in maize. In our work, the commercially available maize variety Raka-Poshi was grown in pots for 30 days under greenhouse conditions. To evaluate the salt-induced oxidative/antioxidant responses in maize for salt stress 0, 25, 50, 75, 100 and 150 mM concentrations, treatments were provided using sodium chloride (NaCl). All the biochemical indices were calculated under all NaCl concentrations, while drought was induced by up to 50% irrigation water. After 30 days of seed germination, the maize leaves were collected for the measurement of lipid peroxidase or malondialdehyde (MDA), glutathione reductase (GR), guaiacol peroxidase (GPOD), hydrogen peroxide (H
