Abstract Purpose: This retrospective cohort study aims to compare the quality of life (QoL) in patients with nasopharyngeal cancer (NPC) treated with intensity-modulated proton therapy (IMPT) versus volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) at different time points.
Materials and methods: We conducted a longitudinal assessment of QoL on 287 newly diagnosed NPC patients (IMPT: 41 and VMAT: 246). We collected outcomes of global QoL, functional QoL, C30 symptoms, and HN35 symptoms from EORTC QLQ-C30 and QLQ-HN35 questionnaires at pre-radiotherapy, during radiotherapy (around 40 Gy), 3 months post radiotherapy, and 12-months post radiotherapy (RT). The generalized estimating equation was utilized to interpret the group effect, originating from inherent group differences; time effect, attributed to RT effects over time; and interaction of the group and time effect.
Results: IMPT demonstrated superior mean dose reductions in 12 of the 16 organs at risk compared to VMAT, including a significant (>50%) reduction in the oral cavity and larynx. Both groups exhibited improved scores of global QoL, functional QoL, and C30 symptoms at 12 months post RT compared to the pre-RT status. Regarding global QoL and C30 symptoms, there was no interaction effect of group over time. In contrast, significant interaction effects were observed on functional QoL (
Conclusions: Compared to VMAT, dose reduction attributed to IMPT could translate into better functional QoL and HN35 symptoms, but the effect is time dependent and exclusively observed during the RT phase.

Abstract CT scanning of the chest is one the most important imaging modalities available for pulmonary disease diagnosis. Lung segmentation plays a crucial step in the pipeline of computer-aided analysis and diagnosis. As deep learning models have achieved human-level accuracy in semantic segmentation of anatomical structures, we propose to use trained deep learning models to predict both healthy and infectious areas in chest CT slices. The semantic segmentation results are summarized and visualized using volume rendering technology in the form of roadmaps. The roadmaps consist of both location and volume information that can be used as a location guidance for inspecting suspected pulmonary lesions of chest CT and can possibly be combined into a rapid triage algorithm for treating acute pulmonary diseases.Clinical Relevance- This research applied trained semantic segmentation models in identifying normal lung and pneumonic infection areas to generate a roadmap for assisting medical doctors in browsing chest CT and prognostication.

Abstract This Letter proposes a holographic cylindrical vector beam converter (HCVBC) design that incorporates a continuously polarization-selective volume hologram circular-grating. A specially designed truncated cone prism is adopted for recording, which is conducted with a single incident, expanded, radially polarized beam. A prototype of this HCVBC was recorded and tested successfully. This design has the advantages of high diffraction efficiency, a narrow band, compactness, and planar configuration; thus, it is especially suitable for low-cost mass production and has high potential for application in related fields.

Abstract Background: This meta-analysis aimed at assessing the diagnostic accuracy of ultrasound-measured laryngeal air column width difference (ACWD) in predicting post-extubation stridor (PES) in intubated adult patients.
Methods: We searched the Medline, Cochrane Library, EMBASE, and Google scholar databases from inception to October, 2022 to identify studies that examined the diagnostic accuracy of ACWD for PES. The primary outcome was the diagnostic performance by calculating the pooled sensitivity, specificity, and area under the curve (AUC). The secondary outcomes were the differences in ACWD and duration of intubation between patients with and without PES.
Results: Following literature search, 11 prospective studies (intensive care setting,
Conclusion: Ultrasound-measured laryngeal ACWD showed satisfactory sensitivity and specificity for predicting PES. Because of the limited number of studies available, further investigations are needed to support our findings.
