    Abstract We present a measurement of the transverse momentum with respect to the jet axis (k(t)) of particles in jets produced in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV. Results are obtained for charged particles in a cone of 0.5 radians around the jet axis in events with dijet invariant masses between 66 and 737 GeV/c(2). The experimental data are compared to theoretical predictions obtained for fragmentation partons within the framework of resummed perturbative QCD using the modified leading log and next-to-modified leading log approximations. The comparison shows that trends in data are successfully described by the theoretical predictions, indicating that the perturbative QCD stage of jet fragmentation is dominant in shaping basic jet characteristics.

    Abstract Compound-specific stable isotope analysis (CSIA) has been used to quantify and identify biodegradation of organic pesticides in the environment. In this work, the kinetic isotope fractionation of carbon and nitrogen was investigated during rapid atrazine degradation by two bacterial isolates, CX-T (Ensifer sp.) and K (Sinorihizobium sp.), under aerobic conditions. Significant isotope fractionation (εcarbon = -2.40 ± 0.07‰, εnitrogen = 1.30 ± 0.13‰, strain CX-T; εcarbon = -1.40 ± 0.07‰, εnitrogen = 2.5 ± 0.5‰, strain K) was observed for both isolates. The same pattern of normal carbon and inverse nitrogen isotope effects were obtained, confirming the same reaction mechanisms of atrazine. The calculated, apparent kinetic isotope effects of strain CX-T (AKIEcarbon = 1.020; AKIEnitrogen = 0.994) and strain K (AKIEcarbon = 1.011; AKIEnitrogen = 0.988) were observed, implying that carbon-chlorine bonds weakened and additional bonds appeared on the triazine ring nitrogen at the transition state. However, isotope enrichment factors and dual isotope slopes (Δ = δ15N/δ13C) of both isolates (Δ = -0.55 ± 0.05, strain CX-T; Δ = -1.07 ± 0.14, strain K) were, nevertheless, inconsistent even for the same compound and same transformation pathway.

    Abstract Antibiotics have remained the cornerstone for the treatment of bacterial infections ever since their discovery in the twentieth century. The uproar over antibiotic resistance among bacteria arising from genome plasticity and biofilm development has rendered current antibiotic therapies ineffective, urging the development of innovative therapeutic approaches. The development of antibiotic resistance among bacteria has further heightened the clinical failure of antibiotic therapy, which is often linked to its low bioavailability, side effects, and poor penetration and accumulation at the site of infection. In this review, we highlight the potential use of siderophores, antibodies, cell-penetrating peptides, antimicrobial peptides, bacteriophages, and nanoparticles to smuggle antibiotics across impermeable biological membranes to achieve therapeutically relevant concentrations of antibiotics and combat antimicrobial resistance (AMR).     Abstract Smoking Cessation and MortalityIn this meta-analysis of four national cohorts (total of 1.48 million adults followed for 15 years, in whom 122,697 deaths occurred), current smokers had higher hazard ratios for death compared with never smokers (2.8 for women, 2.7 for men). Survival between 40 and 79 years of age was 13 years less in people who smoked compared with never smokers. Former smokers showed lower hazard ratios (1.3 in both women and men). Cessation at every age was associated with longer survival, with benefits evident as early as 3 years after cessation.

    Abstract Laminins are essential in basement membrane architecture and critical in re-epithelialization and angiogenesis. These processes and collagen deposition are vital in skin wound healing. The role of angiogenic peptides in accelerating the wound-healing process has been known. The bioactive peptides could be a potential approach due to their similar effects as growth factors and inherent biocompatible and biodegradable nature with lower cost. They can also recognize ligand-receptor interaction and mimic the extracellular matrix. Here, we report novel angiogenic DYVRLAI, CDYVRLAI, angiogenic-collagen PGPIKVAV, and Ac-PGPIKVAV peptides conjugated sodium carboxymethyl cellulose hydrogel, which was designed from laminin.
