Abstract Functional food products containing viable probiotics have become increasingly popular and demand for probiotic ingredients that maintain viability and stability during processing, storage, and gastrointestinal digestions. This has resulted in heightened research and development of powdered probiotic ingredients. The aim of this review is to overview the development of dried probiotics from upstream identification to downstream applications in food. Free probiotic bacteria are susceptible to various environmental stresses during food processing, storage, and after ingestion, necessitating additional materials and processes to preserve their activity for delivery to the colon. Various classic and emerging thermal and nonthermal drying technologies are discussed for their efficiency in preparing dehydrated probiotics, and strategies for enhancing probiotic survival after dehydration are highlighted. Both the formulation and drying technology can influence the microbiological and physical properties of powdered probiotics that are to be characterized comprehensively with various techniques. Furthermore, quality control during probiotic manufacturing and strategies of incorporating powdered probiotics into liquid and solid food products are discussed. As emerging technologies, structure-design principles to encapsulate probiotics in engineered structures and protective materials with improved survivability are highlighted. Overall, this review provides insights into formulations and drying technologies required to supplement viable and stable probiotics into functional foods, ensuring the retention of their health benefits upon consumption.

Abstract Abstract: Leiomyosarcoma is an aggressive subtype of soft tissue sarcoma with frequent metastatic relapse after curative surgery. Herein, we report the 68 Ga-FAPI PET/CT findings in a 45-year-old woman with leiomyosarcoma. 68 Ga-FAPI-04 PET/CT detected increased FAPI uptake in abdominal leiomyosarcoma and liver metastases. The positive findings of 68 Ga-FAPI in this case highlighted that 68 Ga-FAPI may have potential value in the evaluation of leiomyosarcoma.

Abstract Casein forms diverse structures with functionalities tunable by complexation with surfactants, and shellac is an emerging surfactant. In the present work, molecular and mesoscopic structures of shellac and micellar casein and the underlying interactions after treatment with a pH-cycle were investigated. Dispersions with 0.5 % w/v shellac and various shellac:casein mass ratios were prepared at pH 12.0 to dissolve shellac and dissociate casein micelles, followed by neutralization to pH 7.0 to form complexes. Both covalent and non-covalent (hydrogen bonding, electrostatic, and hydrophobic) interactions contributed to the complex formation. The formed complexes had an average diameter of ~80 nm. The complexation of shellac and casein prevented the precipitation of protonated shellac during neutralization, and dispersions with casein:shellac mass ratios of 2:1 and above were absent of precipitates at pH 7.0. The formed nanocomplexes may have applications for preparing novel colloidal systems and loading lipophilic bioactive compounds.

Abstract Abstract: A patient with intrahepatic breast cancer metastasis underwent both 18F-FDG and 68Ga-FAPI PET/CT. However, the lesions are only 68Ga-FAPI avid. Our case illustrates that 68Ga-FAPI PET/CT can be more sensitive in detecting intrahepatic metastasis of breast cancer in some cases.

Abstract Lake sediments serve as a sink for trace elements and provide a record of watershed changes resulting from anthropogenic activities and natural processes. In this study, eight trace elements in the sediments of Lake Aha, an urban lake in Guiyang City, Southwest China, were investigated to reveal the effects of historical coal mining and rapid urbanization in the watershed. Results showed that the median contents of measured trace elements in order of Zn (220.00 mg/kg) > Ni (98.16 mg/kg) > Cr (70.26 mg/kg) > Cu (66.20 mg/kg) > As (58.14 mg/kg) > Co (41.66 mg/kg) > Pb (28.33 mg/kg) > Cd (1.39 mg/kg). Except for Cr and Pb, the median concentrations of Cd, As, Zn, Ni, Co, and Cu were 4.64, 2.33, 2.00, 1.92, 1.81, and 1.09 times higher than regional natural background values respectively. Trace element contents in sediments of the center of the lake were significantly higher than in the rest of the sediment cores, resulting from relatively stable hydrodynamic processes in the region. Vertical variation of trace elements indicated that the fluctuations in the intensity of coal mining activities in the tributaries were effectively tracked by variations of trace element levels in the middle layer sediments of the Youyu River and Baiyan River estuaries. The elevated concentrations of Pb in the surface sediments of the Jinzhong River estuary reflected the rapid urbanization in the basin over the past 20 years. PMF analysis demonstrated that As, Cd, and Pb in sediments were from a mixture of natural and urban activities, and Cu, Zn, Ni, and Co originated from coal mining. This study provides important information for comprehending the anthropogenic activities of small-scale lakes and historical environmental changes.
