Abstract Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is the etiological agent of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Nowadays, FDA has approved over thirty antiretroviral drugs grouped in six categories. Interestingly, one-third of these drugs contain different number of fluorine atoms. The introduction of fluorine to obtain drug-like compounds is a well-accepted strategy in medicinal chemistry. In this review, we summarized 11 fluorine-containing anti-HIV drugs, focusing on their efficacy, resistance, safety, and specific roles of fluorine in the development of each drug. These examples may be of help for the discovery of new drug candidates bearing fluorine in their structures.

Abstract Background: Pheromones have unique advantages for pest control. Current aphid pheromone research focuses on alarm and sex pheromones. However, practical applications are limited so far, as (E)-β-farnesene has only been investigated to a small extent as an alarm pheromone and only male aphids are targeted by sex pheromones. Previous literature reports electrophysiological responses and repellent behavior of asexual aphids to nepetalactone (1B), therefore our objective was to modify nepetalactone's structure to identify key fragments responsible for repellent effects, as guidance for subsequent modifications and further investigation.
Results: In this study, seven derivatives were designed and synthesized based on nepetalactol (1A) and nepetalactone (1B) as lead compounds. Free-choice tests, conducted using cowpea aphids (Aphis craccivora), revealed that the lactone moiety was crucial for the repellent activity, and the removal of the carbonyl group eliminated the repelling effect. Compound (±)1I, an analogue of nepetalactone (1B), demonstrated a significantly higher repellent value than nepetalactone (1B) at three different concentrations, and even at 0.1 mg/mL it maintained a considerable repellent effect (26.5%). Electrostatic potential and density functional theory calculations supported the importance of the carbonyl group for the repellent effects.
Conclusion: The newly discovered para-pheromone (±)1I shows improved repellent effects and potential for development as a novel biological control agent. Based on our innovative findings, analogues with improved efficacy and properties can be designed and prepared. Our research contributes to understanding the effects of structural modifications on pheromone activity and properties, which is crucial for exploring novel pheromone-based products for crop protection. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract Background: Prostate cancer is the most common malignant tumor of male genitourinary system, and the gold standard for its diagnosis is prostate biopsy. Focusing on the methods and skills of prostate biopsy, we explored the learning curve and experience of a novel magnetic resonance imaging and transrectal ultrasound (mpMRI-TRUS) image fusion transperineal biopsy (TPB) technique using electromagnetic needle tracking under local anesthesia.
Methods: The clinical and pathological data of 92 patients who underwent targeted TPB from January 2023 to July 2023 in our center were prospectively collected. The cumulative sum (CUSUM) analysis method and the best fitting curve were used to analyze the learning curve of this novel technique, and the clinical characteristics, perioperative data and tumor positive rate of prostate biopsy of patients at different stages of the learning curve were compared.
Results: With the increase of the number of surgical cases, the overall operative time showed a downward trend. The best fitting curve of CUSUM reached its peak at the twelfth case, which is the minimum cumulative number of surgical cases needed to cross the learning curve of the operation. Taking this as the boundary, the learning curve is divided into two stages: learning improvement stage (group A, 12 cases) and proficiency stage (group B, 80 cases). The surgical time and visual analog scale score during prostate biopsy in group A were significantly higher than those in group B. The visual numerical scale score during prostate biopsy in group A was significantly lower than that in group B. There was no statistically significant difference between group A and group B in the detection rate of csPCa and the incidence of perioperative complications.
Conclusion: The novel targeted TPB technique is divided into learning improvement stage and proficiency stage, and 12 cases may be the least cumulative number.

Abstract Dimethylcyclosiloxanes (DMCs) are utilized as vital monomers in the synthesis of organosilicon compounds, integral to the manufacture of mobile smart terminal devices. Toxicological studies have revealed potential endocrine-disrupting activity, reproductive toxicity, neurotoxicity, and other toxicities of the DMCs. This study investigated the concentrations and composition profiles of seven DMCs, including hexamethylcyclotrisiloxane (D3), octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (D4), decamethylcyclopentasiloxane (D5), dodecamethylcyclohexasiloxane (D6), and tetradecamethylcycloheptasiloxane (D7), hexadecamethylcyclooctasiloxane (D8), and octadecamethylcyclononasiloxane (D9) in three types of mobile smart terminal device components (silicone rubber, adhesive, and plastics). Environmental emissions of DMCs from silicone rubber materials were also estimated to improve the recognition of their potential fate within the environment. D5-D9 were widely present in silicone rubber and adhesives with detection rates ranging from 91-95.5% and 50-100%, respectively, while D3 and D4 were more frequently detected in plastics, both showing a detection rate of 61.1%. Silicone rubber had the highest total DMCs (∑7DMCs) and a concentration of 802.2 mg/kg, which were dominated by D7, D8, and D9. DMCs detected in adhesives were dominated by D4, D5, and D6. The estimated emission of ∑DMCs released into the environment in China from silicone rubber used in mobile smart terminal devices exceeds 5000 tons per year. Further studies are needed on the presence of DMCs in various commodities and environmental media to assess their ecological and human health impacts, as well as the toxicological effects of D7-D9 for the appropriate regulation of these chemicals.
